Transfer Portal Mania

2-3 mill for the top NIL payrolls. 150-200k for a Power6 level starter as things stand according to the article.
If it's $3 million, which supposedly SJU has for next year, the starters are getting a lot more than $200k. Unless a huge chunk of the NIL is for admin costs or left on the table, which I doubt.

$3 million divided by 10 players is $300k per player, if it was divided evenly- which of course it isn't. You have guys like Traore and Conway who are just happy to be on the team. I can easily see our top starters topping $500k.

Or am I missing something?

So…at some point are the top 10 recruits just gonna expect to get in the $3-5 million range, top 50 expect $1mil and someone is gonna give it to them/their people?

This seems like a slippery slope that’s gonna get out of hand…and quick.
And what happens when player A who’s making a million finds out that player B is making 1.8 million? Does he try to re negotiate mid season? Does he not play as hard cause he’s pissed? Is there in fighting on the team? $o much $hit to consider here.

Thank God for Rick Pitino.

No different than any other work place... you are contacted by a recruiter/ex-coworker/whoever- saying that you are underpaid for your position and can make X% more at company Y ... Your evaluate- interview- decide if the money and environment are right for you.... or you stay put cause you are Happy...

Personally have had recruiters try to convince me I was unhappy at my current place... College athletes are just being introduced to Corporate America 4 years sooner than before.

Trilly posted the first gif/portal commitment in the discord. No one on our radar so I'm not going to spoil it. But it's of a team who's in the NCAA tourney from a high major.

I'm happy our staff isn't wasting time.

Admittedly I am addicted to college hoops, but honestly I have my limits. The current environment precludes continuity, enjoying seeing kids develop, more sleazy agents than ever and the erosion of Low D1 programs.

Obviously kids should enjoy the financial dividends of the sport, but this out of control free agency points to an immediate need for middle ground. Two year contracts seems something to consider as Moose, LMF & others have referenced.

Lastly, we get giddy sometimes when we talk about our NIL inclusive of Repole support. Keep in mind it is not a bottomless pit and guys like MR got wealthy with a return on investment mentality. When an elite program trumps your offer late for a player like Luis, Rick & powers to be have to draw the line somewhere. Yes, keeping a player like RJ helps with continuity, but there has to be a point when you say “no mas”. You also have to consider fair compensation for the entire team as well as recruits. Rutgers just landed three studs and rest assured that impacts what can pay others.

This is a tricky business blindly heading to an abyss. Hopefully sensible, bright people of influence develop a happy medium to this insanity or even a loon like me will seek alternative enjoyment.
If you do seek alternative enjoyment can you still come on here and provide us with recruiting information? 😁

I already am. If I wasn't so damn addicted to this board and the friends I've made because of it, I'd be gone already. Regardless, if we had any other coach alive(maybe Jay Wright) steering our ship, I'd likely still be gone. Unless something drastically changes, goodbye season tix next year.

I fully get fans not "enjoying" it as it is not the same sport they fell in love with... Seeing kids develop of the course of a couple years, witnessing their struggles, and celebrating their eventual success... that is seemingly lost in this age.

But no one should have an issue of a kid getting what The Market is willing to pay him.
This not capitalism at work, this is insanity. In what other industry are there hundreds and hundreds of companies vying for the same employees once a year? Eventually they will shoot the goose that laid the golden egg. Nah, they probably won't since they'll still be enough fans convincing themselves that these are college kids playing for the love of the game and their school. Ya know, the same mindset that exits with people who still think pro wrestling is real.

This has been going on for years. It was just under the table before NIL. The thing that changed everything was the unlimited free transfers. That took the power in negotiations from the coaches and shifted it to the players. Most issues would be solved with one change that Moose suggested years ago. One free transfer. After that, any transfer needs to sit a year unless they graduate or the coach leaves/is fired.

+1000 and it's that recent change of allowing unlimited transfers that Pitino (and I'm sure countless other coaches) are finding so hard to deal with. Otherwise we wouldn't even be talking about whether guys like RJ & Taylor are returning.

This is exactly how capitalism works and capitalism and insanity are not mutually exclusive. How dare Microsoft, Google, and Apple all fight for the best candidates to make their companies as strong as possible. And if the guy goes to Apple does he even love Apple, or is he just doing it for an absurd reason like trying to get paid as much as possible?

Will millions of other college basketball fans like myself be able to fool ourselves into believing things we could not possibly care less about like these kids are playing for the love of basketball and the purity of State U?
