Transfer Portal Mania

2-3 mill for the top NIL payrolls. 150-200k for a Power6 level starter as things stand according to the article.

If those #s stay close to that the next few years we can be top 10. It also shows how important bargain players are since each team essentially has its own salary cap.

I feel like if we have a Final Four caliber roster within reach in a few years Repole and company are just going to jump everyone and go nuts out of nowhere…like doubling the #2. Would be great to get Uncle Steve of the Mets involved.

I think as things get worse (which they will) since the incompetent NCAA has refused to try to get a grasp on this insanity, more and more fans and long time coaches will get so turned off they will stop watching and coaching.

Now we have RJ Luis who has come on of late and it being offered mega money by another school to show up? So the benefits of all the hard work to get him where he is will now go to another program? And lets suppose Wilcher for example, gets developed by Pitino, has a great year and then is bought off by some large state school with deep pockets. Then what? Do we start from scratch or buy someone else? How can all of us who are true fans of the sport support this crap.

And you know that pretty soon, a player who believes he should get more PT, mid season may leave for another school. Heck, this is worse then pro sports where there at least time honored contracts.

If certain restraints are not put on this crap, the sport will lose more fans then it can afford.

Admittedly I am addicted to college hoops, but honestly I have my limits. The current environment precludes continuity, enjoying seeing kids develop, more sleazy agents than ever and the erosion of Low D1 programs.

Obviously kids should enjoy the financial dividends of the sport, but this out of control free agency points to an immediate need for middle ground. Two year contracts seems something to consider as Moose, LMF & others have referenced.

Lastly, we get giddy sometimes when we talk about our NIL inclusive of Repole support. Keep in mind it is not a bottomless pit and guys like MR got wealthy with a return on investment mentality. When an elite program trumps your offer late for a player like Luis, Rick & powers to be have to draw the line somewhere. Yes, keeping a player like RJ helps with continuity, but there has to be a point when you say “no mas”. You also have to consider fair compensation for the entire team as well as recruits. Rutgers just landed three studs and rest assured that impacts what can pay others.

This is a tricky business blindly heading to an abyss. Hopefully sensible, bright people of influence develop a happy medium to this insanity or even a loon like me will seek alternative enjoyment.
Agree it’s ridiculous. Things should be capped etc. I can’t imagine how college football is. The costs of massive teams like that just be staggering. I’m thankful at least at this point, that we only have college ball to fund.

Trilly has Georgetown and Nova has top 5 NIL in the country this offseason. It's going to be fascinating next year

Imagine how it is to be a supporter of a mid major program. I'd honestly probably stop watching. It's a glorified farm system

Might want to change your avatar then. If we land him, he’ll be here for one year max and will come here to hit a large payday. The very definition of mercenary.

People get very uncomfortable very quickly when it is kids, many from working-class backgrounds, benefiting from capitalism and not the rich getting richer. I am glad the money is being distributed, I don't care for one second that they are mercenaries, and it does not affect my enjoyment of the sport at all.

I fully get fans not "enjoying" it as it is not the same sport they fell in love with... Seeing kids develop of the course of a couple years, witnessing their struggles, and celebrating their eventual success... that is seemingly lost in this age.

But no one should have an issue of a kid getting what The Market is willing to pay him.

Have to hope that some of these kids are smart enough, or have smart enough handlers, to look beyond today. A professional basketball career is a marathon and not a sprint so sacrifice a little bit today if it means a payoff in the future.

I mean, what is the development under Rick worth to some of these kids? Does a kid take $400k for one year at school A or haircut to half that to play at SJU for Rick Pitino. If the long-term goal is to play in the NBA or Europe where the money over time (or even a year) will eclipse your NIL money, then common sense says take the hit now and play the long game. Someone said Villanova has one of the biggest NIL balances in the country, but they don't have Rick Pitino. Do you really want to trust your future with Kyle Neptune just?

The benefit of having Rick Pitino on our sidelines is he has a history of turning even mediocre talent into professional athletes so you would hope a guy like RJ can see through the dollar signs and realize that another year being coached by Rick Pitino will pay off in the long run.

I'd also add that the current state of affairs is very predatory towards players. They get promised NIL that the school can't deliver, and there's no mechanism to guarantee payment. And with the total lack of transparency about payment, it's also hard to determine what the market actually is -- so these guys have to go through these sketchy af agents who have no rules & can be gassing you up just so they get a pay day. There's no standard contracts or rules about any of this. And, on top of that, if you're a mediocre-to-not good player but love the school, you can also get kicked off the team at a drop of the hat.

This really only works if you're in the top 1-5% of NCAA D1 basketball. Otherwise, I don't really see this as a net positive.

For what it's worth, which is probably not much, I sat beside a Nova guy at the BE tournament who claimed to be quite involved in their NIL efforts. The numbers he was throwing around for top starters were in the $500k-$700k range.

While I agree regarding Rick, there are many other schools with excellent coaches who can offer the same development plus more money.

So…at some point are the top 10 recruits just gonna expect to get in the $3-5 million range, top 50 expect $1mil and someone is gonna give it to them/their people?

This seems like a slippery slope that’s gonna get out of hand…and quick.
