Transfer Portal 2022

We are obviously not as good at it as most teams but just off the top of my head players in the BE this past year from lower level schools:
RJ cole, Caleb Daniels, Tyler Koleck, Dawkins on Creighton, Freeman-Liberty.
Not off the top of my head, add Horchler and Bryce Nze.

Regarding dates of last year's transfers out, I believe Greg W. was the last and he announced on April 20th.

Meh, I get visions of Alpha Bangura, John Himpel, Micky Dixon, David Carraher, Stef Smith, Tareq Coburn.

I only smile when I get to Lamont Middleton (Hartford).

Go after bench players on high-major teams: Bernard Rencher, Ron Rowan, Justin Simon, etc.

Actually, both Earlington and Williams announced they were transferring on March 31st. Williams didn't pick where he was going until April 19th.

Moore was March 14th. Cole was March 16th.

Josh Roberts was March 23rd. John McGriff was March 29th.

Dunn was April 2nd.

None of those were elite transfers and with the rules changing of the portal and free transfer year everyone is looking to take advantage of portal and get immediate help.

You cannot compare it to 5 years ago let alone 15-20-25 years ago.

I could be wrong but my very strong recollection was Williams & Earlington both entered the portal on 3/31 but Williams' Dad made a point of saying he was only exploring his options and might return to SJU; we all were on pins and needles until the third week of April when he announced he was transferring to Louisiana.

Ok, that's helpful info.

So that means based on history it's unlikely there's any more that transfer out. For some reason I was thinking it was after final 4 weekend before guys started making announcements they were leaving last year. I remember when CMA was at Arkansas it was known he has his year end player meetings after final 4 weekend and that's when we'd usually know about transfers then. Things have changed a lot since then with the new transfer rules and how the portal works, so obvious he's changed that.

If that's the case that's pretty good news, most of the core stayed, only unexpected departure ended up being Wheeler.

Don't mean to get down on a kid, but I really don't know why you guys get excited over a mid-major transfer.

How many have ever been difference makers at SJU?

How many have been productive players?

And how many of them have been busts?
Plenty of mid-major kids have been very effective after transferring to other programs.
Wouldn't make much sense to redshirt here, learn the system, then transfer before actually giving himself a chance to see if he can earn playing time here, unless the staff just tells him straight up he's not going to play this year based on what they seen him doing at practice. If that was the case I'd think he'd already been gone by now.

Anybody know the dates everyone transferred out last year? From history I know CMA likes to start having his individual player meetings the week after the final 4. So if there's going to be any transfers we'd most likely know this week.
A bunch of la

I don’t think you can say that bc most guys transferred out by this time last year there won’t be any more transfers this year. It’s still very early and this is a fluid situation. Last year was the first year of this craziness so it’s not much of a sample size. If memory serves me correctly, Figueroa transferred out very late the year before last. It wouldn’t surprise me if there were at least one transfer, if not two before it’s all said and done.

I saw the bat signal and immediately hoped over. Who is it?

Edit: it got deleted damn

SJUBB hashtag is the worst. I've never seen anything like it on twitter as far as something that represents a sports team. The trolls have literally taken it over, I haven't seen anything helpful posted on there in a few weeks. Good luck getting anything there other than anti-CMA talk or fake news and commitment posts from PharvePhan.

Off the top of my head, Lamont Middleton is best recent one . . . and he arrived 32 years ago.

*Whoops, didn't see your post. New site doesn't seem to load in real time.

I look forward to the day when we get a productive mid-major player.

They are out there. When CBS Sports printed the top 100 transfers from last year SJU landed 1, Soriano. And I think he was in the 80's.

Guys like Steph Smith and Coburn were not considered very good by most prognosticators and guess what they weren't.

Here's a site that ranks all of players in the transport portal. I wasn't aware of this site until a few days ago when I seen people on twitter talking about it, but this site is pretty legit, quite a few beat writers have been referencing this site when talking about transfers, including ESPN's Jeff Borzello, that's who I first seen talking about it.

The main 3 guys we know that St. John's is after are all in the top 100 of his transfer rankings.

7. Andre Curbelo - 5 Star transfer ranking
10. Joe Toussaint - 5 Star transfer ranking
91. Camren Wynter - 4 Star transfer ranking

Then as Paultz mentioned, TJ followed Norchad Omier on twitter (no confirmation yet staff has reached out). He's ranked as the #2 recruit and a 5 star transfer ranking. So, the staff is on players in the portal that these analytical guys think can be difference makers.

Hard to predict what current guys will do until we see some additions made to the roster. Could change a few guys role for the upcoming season. Would love it if they all stick around regardless of who we add, but if there’s big time talent to bring in, you obviously take that risk.

Here is a CBS Sports listing of top transfers last year in July, they go as far as top 85 transfers.

2 things:

1)SJU did not land one per this list (I understand these lists are all subjective) and
2)SJU outgoing transfers were also not listed anywhere on this list. So no one actually thought any of SJU's outgoing transfers were going to be particularly impactful and none of them actually landed at a high major.

I pointed this out a few weeks ago…that’s way more of a problem than a bunch of crotchety old dudes on a message board. How to fix…I don’t know.

Btw…love the new format. Wow, this is fantastic.

Depending on your definition of "productive," but I thought Nick Rutherford from Monmouth was a very valuable role player.
You're right. I forgot about that guy. He was productive.

But my point remains that we've done so much better with bench players from high majors like Owens, Wheeler, Martin, Simon, etc.

And yeah, we've had some busts like that out-of-shape kid from NC State and that other big from South Carolina. I don't remember their names and I is too lazy to do the googles.
