With SJU's geographical proximity to Citifield in Flushing, it shouldn't be surprising that there are more than a few Mets fans on here, but to me, it still is. Some psych grad student should do his dissertation on the type of individual who roots for both the Mets and SJU. The conclusions may not be so pretty. As Jack Nicholson once said, "You don't want the truth. You can't handle the truth".
In 1967 and '68, Seaver and Koosman enjoyed great rookie years that established them as anchors of a developing staff. In 1969, Gary Gentry had a strong rookie campaign (13 wins), veteran Cardwell had an okay year (decent ERA, losing record) and Nolan Ryan wasn't yet Nolan Ryan but was scary talented. Around midseason, they acquired a veteran bat (Clendenon) to give the Mets a solid 4 hitter to go with Jones (career season), Agee (bounceback yr), Boswell, etc. Offense was barely good enough but pitching got them there. The mainstays of the bullpen were vets Ron Taylor and Cal Koonce. Tug McGraw was not yet the dominant reliever.
It's already been noted here how this team resembles the 84-85 team that showed signs of being good. Those teams had Darling and then Gooden as touted starters, and eventually acquired Hernandez and then Carter as major hitters, got a great season from Ray Knight, to go with Straw, Backman, Wilson, and roidless Dykstra.
Middle relief is a really important part of baseball today. The 2006 Mets had it in experienced guys like Oliver, sidearmer Bradbury and others - then got rid of them all to save money. They weren't the same after.
For the first time in a long time, Mets fans can feel it. Once again a talented staff despite being diminished by injuries give hope. I'm hoping they are just good enough to be buyers in July, and perhaps can add one of two bats and some bullpen help.
