The Dark Knight Returns

With SJU's geographical proximity to Citifield in Flushing, it shouldn't be surprising that there are more than a few Mets fans on here, but to me, it still is. Some psych grad student should do his dissertation on the type of individual who roots for both the Mets and SJU. The conclusions may not be so pretty. .

attached is the conclusion to such study. :)

Some psych grad student should do his dissertation on the type of individual who roots for both the Mets and SJU. The conclusions may not be so pretty. As Jack Nicholson once said, "You don't want the truth. You can't handle the truth".

In 1967 and '68, Seaver and Koosman enjoyed great rookie years that established them as anchors of a developing staff. In 1969, Gary Gentry had a strong rookie campaign (13 wins), veteran Cardwell had an okay year (decent ERA, losing record) and Nolan Ryan wasn't yet Nolan Ryan but was scary talented. Around midseason, they acquired a veteran bat (Clendenon) to give the Mets a solid 4 hitter to go with Jones (career season), Agee (bounceback yr), Boswell, etc. Offense was barely good enough but pitching got them there. The mainstays of the bullpen were vets Ron Taylor and Cal Koonce. Tug McGraw was not yet the dominant reliever.

It's already been noted here how this team resembles the 84-85 team that showed signs of being good. Those teams had Darling and then Gooden as touted starters, and eventually acquired Hernandez and then Carter as major hitters, got a great season from Ray Knight, to go with Straw, Backman, Wilson, and roidless Dykstra.

Middle relief is a really important part of baseball today. The 2006 Mets had it in experienced guys like Oliver, sidearmer Bradbury and others - then got rid of them all to save money. They weren't the same after.

For the first time in a long time, Mets fans can feel it. Once again a talented staff despite being diminished by injuries give hope. I'm hoping they are just good enough to be buyers in July, and perhaps can add one of two bats and some bullpen help.

Wow Beast!
That post was, well, how can I describe it, awesome?
No wait
Informative?
No wait
Fantastic
No wait still again
I know
It was long
And ( of course with that intentionally sarcastic comment) I'm not even a Mets fan though I have fond memories of
Chop Choo Coleman!!
Goodnight
:)

P S I like Citifield and I don't root against the Mets!!! Hey I'm proud to say my youngest brother whom I helped raise played ball at Yale and I recall he was a freshman when Darling was senior or there about!

Someone wake me up...

my Mets have won eight in a row???

D'Arnaud injury--hope it's not too intense, but "Fractured hand" sounds bad.

The pitching staff is good enough to keep them strong thru some injuries, and while I appreciate the "no excuses" approach, too many injuries to key players could catch up at some point. Blevins was solid too, and now he may be out too. Let's hope this trend doesn't continue but the wins do.

D'Arnaud out at least 4-6 weeks I hear

Damn the injuries today hurt bad. Literally. Travis was hitting real well

This could be like the mets 84-85 before the magical year.

Still missing this generation's Keith Hernandez, who arrived just before the Daryl/Doc youth surge.

Basically Alderson needs to find a former MVP that we can steal for a bag of balls because he put the cocaine into his nose and ran afoul of "The Way."

I actually agree. We could use some type of veteran who can pinch hit with POWER and hopefully come off the bench and crush a HR. Like Frenchie

Left hand? (could make it easier, but I wouldn't want to catch 95 mph fastballs after recovering from a fractured hand). With the Mets, it's never easy, is it?

Right hand. Plawecki is more of a doubles guy but he should hold the fort down. Bigger concern is Blevins. Bullpen taking a beating. Our replacement? Hansel Robles? Crap!

BTW, Conforto tearing up St. Lucie. Thought he would have started with BMets. Either way, should meet Nimmo soon.

Grandy coming around tonight although his season so far hasn't been a waste because he had so many walks and some pretty good ab's.

Nice to take down atlanta

They said on the broadcast that the last time the Mets started 11-3 was '86. We have our version of El Sid in Colon. Keith is the master of that booth. I will be partaking in a couple of shake shack trips. Can't wait.

I think it was Dodger fans who coined the phrase "Wait till next year", and probably started using it in June or earlier. Just visited Wrigley last week. Would have loved to have seen Ebbetts. You are aware that Robert Moses offered the Dodgers Flushing Meadows as a site for a new stadium. O'Malley bristled and said "We are the BROOKLYN Dodgers. We're not going there."

Unfortunately, the Dodgers wanted Atlantic terminal, which was a site of filthy, defunct chicken slaughterhouses. Moses, who told people what to do, and wasn't told what to do, said no. That's the site of the Barclay Center. If Moses relented, they'd still be the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Mets broadcasters are simply the best. If Keith and Darling say it, bank on it.

One game doesn't make a career, but Plawecki got off to a great start, no? Does not look overwhelmed in the least, and Keith was gushing how he took an outside fastball to right field - textbook according to Hernandez. Also nailed a runner with a nice throw after a wild pitch. Probably will go down no matter what he does, but what a nice problem to have if he plays well.

On the radio yesterday, Jon Heyman said the Mets will not lose another game all year! Some claim he was being facetious, but my favorite flavor of Kool-Aid is red.

Oh Yeah!

My prediction for this team was 78-84 wins. Not getting carried away, but my hope is they are in the race come mid-season and become buyers and not sellers. If they add a legitimate bat and some bullpen help could stay in playoff hunt the whole way.

Can't underestimate our start even if it is only 14 games. If we go .500 over the rest of the season we win 85 games. Just a little better and we are right in the playoff race.

With a 162 game season, it's such a grind to perform well for extended periods. As easily as you can win 12 of 15, teams that do that and aren't for real often have droughts as well. I hope you're right, but I have concerns about the back end of the rotation performing consistently well, if the lineup has enough hitters end to end, and if the bullpen is playoff worthy.

Of course there are reasons to be skeptical as these are the Mets. In baseball anything can happen but I like the vibe of this team. The back end of the rotation has some question marks but we also have three potential upgrades at mid season with Montero, Syndegaard and Matz. Montero could also slide back to solidify our relieving. Things don't look great right now with Parnell and Black but if either could come back that would boost our relieving. Campbell has been ok for Wright and Plawecki looked good yesterday. Granderson had his first good game of the season and could give us a lift. Murphy unless he has an injury will start to hit. I like the fact that we are overcoming injuries and different guys are stepping up. When Flores is hitting home runs and Tejada three run doubles, someone is looking out for us.
