The Dark Knight Returns

loved how Harvey hit Utley to send a message instead of intentional walk but he should have kept an eye on him at first

that was a bullshit catchers interference

MJM: calmate! :)

This board has been too crazy of late to keep up with. :)

Just got home, and Mets up late on Phillly--bury em, and for once, can we dominate at home? Sheeesh.

What was today? or was it yesterday? Not my birthday yet... haha.

ADDED: What the hell kind of game went on out there tonight!? Wright, Flores, and Cuddyer all coming out of the game, Collins ejected, 4 hit-batsmen, etc. Weird. 3-0 at home? Now that is a good thing...

7IP 0R and Harvey gets the no-decision because he walks off the mound 0-0 and the Mets go onto lose 1-0 in extra innings because they didn't do a thing to fix this anemic lineup.

Also Cuddeyer goes on the DL 'cause he's Cuddeyer.
Offense will be fine. Bullpen is gonna kill us.

Bullpen is 10th in MLB with 2.41 era.

Harvey did his best Don Drysdale imitation. Why waste 4 pitches under a strict pitch count when 1 will do the job.

Of course, he ought to be a little nervous the next time he steps into the box against the Phils.

Harvey needs to be careful where he throws his off speed pitches against efties. Hung a few tonight when when he was ahead and should've buried them in the dirt.

Yeah falls in love with his other pitches sometimes. Just sit back and enjoy the next 3 years though because after that he will be a Yankee or Red Sox

They hit him, then Phillie Pitchers also have to get in box against him.

He looked like he wanted Utley to charge him.

A pox on you and all your ancestors.

When will the MADNESS end?!?!?!?

But seriously, Harvey's going to get drilled. Just hope it's in his posterior and not the hands.

Not what I want, I am a Met Fan. Combination of Boras and the fact that Randolph and Mortimer Duke own the Mets and writing is unfortunately on the wall.

Utley handled it like the pro he is. I don't think there will be payback on that one.

I have pretty much thought the way you do on this up until last night.

Obviously anything can happen over 3 years but a friend of mine was there last night and on opening day and he said there was big time buzz at the game last night and even though the crowd wasn't bigger he thought the crowd was even better noise wise.

I don't remember the last time I heard a crowd as loud when a pitcher hit a player. Harvey is big time now with the crowd and I while it wasn't his best night last night he might have just set the tone for this team with hitting Utley.

There will be major buzz every night he pitches which means increased ticket sales and merchandise and concessions etc.

Freaking adults wearing batman masks. Surreal. This could be like the mets 84-85 before the magical year. We aren't there yet but we have pitching up now and in the minors

I could see though if over the 3 years Matz and Synd... etc come up then maybe they trade him that last year and spend money on bats but I'll just enjoy the time now and hope that Boras gets blackmailed in drug sex scandal and forced out of being an agent

Still missing this generation's Keith Hernandez, who arrived just before the Daryl/Doc youth surge.

Basically Alderson needs to find a former MVP that we can steal for a bag of balls because he put the cocaine into his nose and ran afoul of "The Way."

So Josh Hamilton after he's waived by the Angels?

Josh Hamilton in NYC? The Mets will need to hire a half dozen babysitters in that case.

Josh Hamilton?

He'll be doin' coke off a hooker's ass within a year in this city. No thank you.

But they need a stud on offense. Even a healthy Wright is a bit overrated to be honest. Cuddyer is going to be hurt at some point, right? :)

D'Arnaud has been wonderful early on. Like him in the 2nd hole for now, but catchers usually break down as a season progresses. I don't get Collins and this lineup he has used prior to the injury bug hitting. Why is Wright batting second, and that stupid 8/9 pitcher spot. I still think Murphy should be in the 2...takes pitches, smart hitter overall, etc.

But I'll take the sweep over Depaul, eh, I mean, Philly. Talk about falling down of late. But it's nice to have a sweet start at home where Citi-Field has been far from a home field advantage.

Go Mets.

Fark guys, Main Man made a joke about needing a former MVP with a drug problem and I found him. And I don't even watch baseball, just have a great sense of humor.

With SJU's geographical proximity to Citifield in Flushing, it shouldn't be surprising that there are more than a few Mets fans on here, but to me, it still is. Some psych grad student should do his dissertation on the type of individual who roots for both the Mets and SJU. The conclusions may not be so pretty. As Jack Nicholson once said, "You don't want the truth. You can't handle the truth".

In 1967 and '68, Seaver and Koosman enjoyed great rookie years that established them as anchors of a developing staff. In 1969, Gary Gentry had a strong rookie campaign (13 wins), veteran Cardwell had an okay year (decent ERA, losing record) and Nolan Ryan wasn't yet Nolan Ryan but was scary talented. Around midseason, they acquired a veteran bat (Clendenon) to give the Mets a solid 4 hitter to go with Jones (career season), Agee (bounceback yr), Boswell, etc. Offense was barely good enough but pitching got them there. The mainstays of the bullpen were vets Ron Taylor and Cal Koonce. Tug McGraw was not yet the dominant reliever.

It's already been noted here how this team resembles the 84-85 team that showed signs of being good. Those teams had Darling and then Gooden as touted starters, and eventually acquired Hernandez and then Carter as major hitters, got a great season from Ray Knight, to go with Straw, Backman, Wilson, and roidless Dykstra.

Middle relief is a really important part of baseball today. The 2006 Mets had it in experienced guys like Oliver, sidearmer Bradbury and others - then got rid of them all to save money. They weren't the same after.

For the first time in a long time, Mets fans can feel it. Once again a talented staff despite being diminished by injuries give hope. I'm hoping they are just good enough to be buyers in July, and perhaps can add one of two bats and some bullpen help.
