By nature I am an optimistic person but certainly not an unrealistic one. On the train heading into MSG this morning I did not envision by any stretch of my imagination a victory by St. John’s against Syracuse today. In fact based on the recent performances against Fordham and Niagara the best I was hoping for was to somehow keep it a competitive game with the final St. John’s deficit under double digits.
However one of the things I love about going to St. John’s games and sports in general is seeing the unexpected. Today was awesome! So many things surprised me: the crisp passing, the movement, the defense, the 22 assists, the buzz of Red energy rocking the packed Garden and silencing the Orange wave and the amazing Amar Alibegovic magically transforming from an end of the bench afterthought into an improved version of Kristaps Porzingis.
The game plan was so well conceived that it became clear early on that St. John’s smart approach to the Syracuse zone was going to keep them in the game but even then I never thought they could have overcome the tough hand the brutal refs handed them (Sima’s third and fourth fouls were total phantoms). However despite the odds being stacked against them just about everyone stepped up and did something great. After the Alibegovic breakout performance the biggest surprise to me was how quickly Yakwe has made such an impact on this team. His offensive output today was very significant and this along with his defensive skills, plus elite athletic ability makes him a highly promising element to our team’s success going forward.
The great thing was that this was a true team victory and just about everybody contributed; From Mussini playing with his typical burning intensity and hitting dagger like three after three, Sima controlling the paint and altering shot after shot on defense, Durand hitting big shots and grabbing big boards and Mouvika bringing maturity and toughness, to the whole coaching staff who put together a great game plan. Kudos to everyone involved!
The best part for me is that efforts like this will infuse my future optimism and makes going to the games and rooting for the team that much more fun. Go St. John’s! Remember anything is possible!
