Student support.... PATHETIC...... at game

I want to ask the current students what the school/students do to promote attendance or promote the games. Do they talk about it on the school ,radio station are there notices, ticket promotions or sales? Whats done?

Not much, the MVP point system is supposed to be the incentive. There are not really ticket promotions that I have ever heard of. I am a fourth year and been going to almost all games since i was a freshman. Im also an RA in a freshman hall and when i try to drag these guys to games, they do not. They think its too much money, which IMO is reasonable to see a BE talented BBall game for 5/15$. But these kids are broke for the most part and free tickets could help. However, I think its more of the issue of these kids being lazy and thinking that we are not good. Winning and the hype that would surround winning I think is the ultimate answer. Its sad and im embarrassed at games when i think to myself that potential blue chip recruits are either watching on Tv or are physically in attendance. The lack of student section cannot help us in any way. They say the garden is a recruiting tool but is a lethargic, empty garden a recruiting tool?.

Winning cures everythng. Fans were into it and attending games last year becasuse we had a great season and beat 6 top 25 teams. Day in and night out fans knew we could beat almost anyone. This year its a differnt story. we are shorthanded and will be lucky to win a handful more games. I do howwever support the team s much as possible but living in NC makes attening games regulary almost impossible. Howver I watch every game on TV and have followed the team for the last 20 years and have watched almost every single, season after season. Even when things were worse than they are now. I am trying to get tickets for the game at Cameron and go every year they play at Duke along with making a trip up To Phlly for the Nova game or NY at least once or twice a season to attend a game. With that being said students and alumni in and aorund the metropolitan area you have no excuse to not go. if I can make it to 2-3 games living in NC you hjave no excuses. This team needs our support now more than ever. The future is bright. We are New York's team, we are St. John's!

I agree that winning will change everything but I believe that if you go to the game, you should be "into" it. . .I may not be the same loud mouth that I was in '74 but I sure as hell remain very vocal and am not afraid to be "a fan". While it is tough to go crazy when you fall behind big (and know it has slipped away), the folks that are at the game should, at minimum, stand when the team is introduced and be vocal during the game.

Not sure what the school does to promote student attendance but there should be more students in attendance than there were at the GT game. Those in attendance are GREAT, VOCAL and UNASHAMED TO CHEER. We just need more. The sections behind the basket in the levels above the floor should almost be free to students (they are always empty and no one in their right mind would pay good $ for them). Broadway producers "paper" the house, so should we.

the fraternity/sororities on campus and other organizations should be urged to buy tickets to games.

^ yes Greek life never show up to games.

Also agree that the diversity at St. John's really hurts the student turnout

IMO, would be a worthwhile endeavor for The TORCH to investigate the primary reasons why students don't show up to the games in greater numbers than they do.

If the team was 15 and 1 would any of this matter? I would think not.

An argument can me made that because St. John's has a very diverse student body with varied interests, that a winning basketball team would actually bring the student body together by giving them a shared common interest,.

That is to say a tremendous pride in the university and its basketball program.

No great surprise and as many others have written, winning will put more students in the seats at CA and MSG.

As NY Giant Antrel Rolle would say, "At the end of the day" most people are front runners and are quick to jump on the bandwagon once the winning begins.

Also, judge the students after the Nova game next week. School isn't in session until Wednesday so the out-of-towners are still out of town.

Yeah cause we all know it is the out of town students who usually pack the house. Expecting 19.5 at the garden, rjght? :(

They should have a free ticket lottery for all students to enter to fill those empty seats & bus them from campus to msg

Its embarassing to have a empty garden , try & claim on the back of buses your ny's team but your students dont come to games bec. your overcharging them :( Thats Moanasch fault!

My sophomore year (04-05) the school did something to encourage students to turn out at games. They eliminated student season tickets and instead gave students free tix when they showed their ID card, both at MSG and CA. I think this would be a great idea, for increasing attendance. Its embarrassing that Gtown 400 miles away from NY had more students show up than SJU. I do think SJU had more general fans then Gtown but the students are always more noticeable.

As a student at the time I did not really like it as I used to buy 2 tix and bring a friend/family member. And this policy prevented that, but I think its something that could really help now.

If you look at the numbers SJU charges $15 a head for students at MSG. Say they get 1000 students a game (I think that's a generous number too) that's 15K a game from student tix. Well yes that's a big number financially, I don't think that its work the extra say 250 kids it could get if tix were free.

If it were not for the Alumni there would be nobody at most of these games. It is up to the students to fill in the seats behind the baskets as we did when it was our turn.....until that happens then students should just be grateful that the Alumni are in the stands. It is also hard to cheer at a 20 point blow-out ........

When we were up 13-5 you can hear a pin drop.

When we were up 13-5 I was just getting to my seat after spending 20 minutes trying to give my ticket to the guy at the gate!

I'd say the crowd at the gate with me was 60% Georgetown, 30% St John's and 10% basketball junkies just wanting a game.

Well during the 08-09 season during the nightmare norm years the school basically bribed students to go to the games by giving them a free metrocard and a 10 dollar gift card to either dunkin donuts or applebees and two free movie tickets. it was a disaster. alot of students would show up but then they would leave halfway in between the games. then the school gave a piece of paper in order to redeem the free stuff at the end of the game to ensure that students would stay the entire game. I saw students pick up that some left on the ground and then find a ticket that was thrown on the ground by a fan or student and then redeem the prize the next day. the mvp system sucks but i am glad they stopped the old system. the school appeared to desperate which they were.

"It is also hard to cheer at a 20 point blow-out ........"

I'm sorry but that's a ridiculous statement. The game was at 8-12 pretty much the whole way until our run got it down to 3 late. Gtown then blew it open; that was not a "20 point blowout." You don't want to cheer fine, but that is a lame excuse.

We can debate this issue forever. The turnout/support was just plain awful on Sunday. You can blame whoever you want, student, fans, alumni, the school for not doing more..but at the end of the day we have only ourselves as a whole to blame. Kudos to those that did show up and have been showing up.

Had almost 12k at the game I thought. Not an awful turnout. Was pretty good crowd overall. Student section wasn't good but they're on break, not that it's and excuse.

This isn't going to change this year. Its going to take time to generate the excited needed for these students to come to the games. It will also help when SJU isn't playing at the matinee and start getting some good tip off times. Not sure if many of you remember college, but waking up in Queens to get to a Noon game is not the easiest task for a college student who got home well passed midnight. Plus, many alumni would prefer a 7 o'clock start so they could schedule a dinner / drinks around the game, rather than the noon starts.

None of these are excuses, but my real point is that we dont have to go through the topic after every MSG game. There will not be a meaningful change this season for the games at MSG. No need to beat a dead horse.

The current resident students make a lot of noise and show excellent support. When 3,000 kids are out of town, you are left with some quiet old alums and a few commuter students when we field a young and losing team against a nationally ranked team with a huge NYC fan and alumni base like Gtown, Duke or Syracuse. Add in a playoff football Sunday and to get 12,000 fans for a noon game with a struggling young team is pretty good IMO.
Just to temper some of the critics of the poor students, most of whom are on break, if we had the redmen team we all expected that would have included one-and-done NBA player Nurideen Lindsey, Norvel Pelle, Jakarr Sampson along with the current group, we may have had a winning record and may have beaten Northeastern, Arizona, and Texas A&M and maybe upset a struggling Louisville at the Garden, etc. and then maybe the redmen would have had a couple 1000 more fans anticipating a win rather than a loss. Winning is the difference, not the student support and the rest of the season will be the same. Kudos to all who showed up and they will be rewarded next year for sure.

At ages 18-22 if you have trouble getting up for a noon game than just don't bother going to sleep the night before. Really everyone needs to stop with all the BS excuses because realistically that's just what they are BS. I have been a season ticket holder since my freshman yr 72-73 and the reality is we just don't have that many fans that are big enough fans to attend the games. Sure if we were a perennial top 5 program we would draw near to full sell-out crowds to MSG but that would be because everyone loves a winner.

It is really sad.. there were plenty of times that i was the only person cheering and yelling.. i sit close enough for the players to hear, but its horrible. Even if its a blow out, cheer for the kids, curse at G-Town, just make some noise, yell at the refs, anything. Oh St Johns is down 20, lets all be quite and sit on our hands?? That makes no sense. The refs were horrible enough that even down 20, there was something to yell about.

We have thee world worst fans.
