Staffing Change
Tea leaves;

Mitch absence may be an indication of his willingness to move back to the Special Assistant spot or he opts to move on. It will be interesting to see what staff is out there during July open period. I would be surprised if Mitch is one.

Rice may be only candidate for a AC position. I still believe even if he comes, it will be after he completes his AAU gig in July.

Lastly, my tea leaves may suck. :)
A very well thought out and reasoned post which is super logical. Unfortunately logic does not always dictate in today’s society. In this instance I truly hope it does. Zero reason I can think of that would benefit the program for Mitch not to revert to special assistant role.

Not sure but didn't Georgetown have an all black staff a few yrs back Do not feel an all white or black staff would put off a player from attending the school of his choice

Respectfully disagree. Pretty sure It was an issue with Ponds and he seriously considered Providence in part bc, at the time, SJU did not have anybody of color on the staff.

We can’t really generalize as I’m sure some kids/parents/coaches would factor in color - however - I always got the feeling that young Mr. Ponds and his folks were very comfortable with one Chris Mullin and skin tone had nothing to do with it. And I think ( though others here would know better than I) the Ponds family has no regrets w the Red Storm decision.
All the best
A nice year seems to be on the horizon... eager to see our new JC and Louisiana kid and others.

The only color that sways top recruits is NBA GREEN.
Bill Self and John Calipari use black assistants as bait to influence them in attending an overwhelmingly white campus.
African American students make up 4 % of all Kansas undergraduates. At Kentucky they represent 7 % of the student population. As recently reported and being investigated by the FBI, other incentives are used. Black assistants are being thrown under the bus left and right in the process.
Forget the color of the staff. Just run a clean program.

I did not think Mullin needed more help than what he received from St.Jean, Mitch, last year in terms of Game Management or , player development . I am of the faction that would support anybody but, Rice . As for Mullin’s recruits , I may be mistaken but, Freudenberg , Mussini , perhaps one or 2 others might have had some initial contact with Lavin , prior to his leaving . Sima showed early he wasn’t BE caliber . Yakwe took a while longer but, just never progressed. Bad hands, no shot , foul prone , at inorportune times . Good leaper , poor defensively . Not a loss for us . As for current HS players , there seems to be several bordering on many who would have a shot at getting . Villanova has had advantage of Recruiting off of 2 National Chsmpionships in last 3 years . Wright has moved into the top of the Elite Coaches Club and deservedly so . Winning , regardless if it results from Transfers , plays a big role in Recruting . We should see that in 2018-19 season .
I can't agree more Sly! Mullin got tremendous help from Mitch Richmond last season! And, Rice would only be a bad influence on the mild mannered Mullin . Good one , 72.. We will see, won’t we ? Yes, Rice has the rep of being fully in control at all times . His stint at Rutgers proved that ... Of all the possible candidates that Mullin and St John’s could consider, why Rice ? I get he has taken Anger Mgt workshops and has returned to AAU Coaching but, really is St John’s the place for him to restart his College Coaching career ? I don’t think so . Yes, maybe there are more posters clamoring for Rice than those opposed to his hiring but, so what ? Letting Fans influence Hiring decisions is not good policy . As Beast has so correctly pointed out , there was near 100 percent support for Rohrrsen being added as AC and, that didn’t work out . For whatever reasons . And , his departure hasn’t seemed to have any adverse Recruiting impact , if at all . Granted , your post was funny , in a certain way . Obviously played well with those in your flock . But, nevertheless was a good retort . [soundcloud][/soundcloud]

A nice year seems to be on the horizon... eager to see our new JC and Louisiana kid and others.
. Good Post, General . I too agree that it appears the Ponds Family Values input from Chris and others and , certainly they discussed Shamorie’s decision to opt for another season and not take chances on being a second round pick or, not being picked at all. Shamorie will likely be the Pre Season BE Player of the Year and quite possibly a National Player of the Year candidate . And, he knows and the family does as well , what he needs to do to improve his game . Shamorie and Mullin appear to have a great relationship and it’s pretty evident on the Court . Ponds is poised to have a great Year and we all want him to achieve his dream . He has all the stuff to do
It too.

Count me in amongst the group who find the infatuation with Rice to be aIittle strange. Fact of the matter is if I’m an opposing coach recruiting against us I have that video bookmarked on my phone of a homophobic lunatic abusing his players at every turn. Hard pass.

Are there any other candidates we can pry from another program to take the burden off Matt with recruits and has some x’s and o’s experience?

So the years of therapy and good behavior at his high school gig and AAU means absolutely nothing? There is no redemption of people? Ok

Parents don’t seem to have a problem sending their kids to play for him on the AAU circuit.

Those are very ugly scenes of what seems to be an emotionally disturbed man.
Tried & convicted, or simply lynched?
End of story?
No.
People get treated for emotional issues and recover.
Mike Rice apparently has...to the point that his AAU kids (and their parents I guess?) embrace his skills in bringing their sons’ talents to ever higher levels...one accompanying the guy to a local college campus.
Most people seeing this will contrast it to the rehabilitated Mike Rice and applaud the man for battling and managing his disorder.
I do.
Let’s go Johnnies.

 I could’ve sworn there was a black poster who said having a mike rice + an all white staff could be a disadvantage.

And I know for a fact this has been used against Mullin already.

Mitch might stay as Special Advisor, and maybe Marcus Hatten comes in as DOBO...
Just sayin’.

I hope Mitch stays as a special advisor as well. Hopefully Marcus stays on the AAU circuit and becomes a power player.

This country is built on giving people second chances
The list of people given second chances in all walks of life is huge
Initially, I had my doubts about Rice
But he has paid his dues, made an effort to rehabilitate himself and is seemingly doing well
He has worked hard to change his life and is as worthy as anyone else to get another shot
I hope that CM has the guts to pull the trigger.
We finally have a roster with sufficient talent to compete.
Rice has the ability to really contribute and could make a difference
Do it, Chris!!!!!!

People have mental issues sometimes.. Call it a disease if you will.. Why do we have no problem giving players a second/third chance, but are opposed to giving a coach one? He has spent the last half decade getting help for whatever created the demon in his head that he was battling.. I deal with a horrible case of panic disorder where if not for therapy and medicine, I wouldn't be able to leave my house. It's not something i could control. It's not someone I wanted to be.. However whatever receptors in my brain are misfiring causes me this issue.. This guy has gotten the help he needs. No reason not to give him a chance. What he did was wrong, however he hit rock bottom and has spent the last 5 years working on getting his shit together.. I'm sure we've all done effed up things at some point in our lives that we were forgiven for..

Much respect for your honesty, thanks for sharing.

Rice's lengthy hiring process is nothing but brilliant trolling by Mullin. If he hired Rice quickly, it would take away from so many of the absurd posts that keep popping up here.

Although, once on staff, the next Rice thread will encompass how long will it take before his Team Rio players all commit here. And anything less will be an abject failure.
