Rice's lengthy hiring process is nothing but brilliant trolling by Mullin. If he hired Rice quickly, it would take away from so many of the absurd posts that keep popping up here.

Although, once on staff, the next Rice thread will encompass how long will it take before his Team Rio players all commit here. And anything less will be an abject failure.
So true! I believe Rice comes, because Mullin is comfortable with him and feels he can help on the bench and in recruiting.

Would he help in recruitment of Rio kids and with his AAU contacts? Of course. Would his hiring guarantee the 19 kids like Aidan and Lewis come with all their elite options? Of course not. Let’s trust and support Mullin’s judgment on this. Btw, Rice knows Matt and Gregg well enough to have earned their respect from what I gather.

You embarrassed me (although that is not very difficult) with your erudite post, in reply to my unfunny ramblings.

Only SJU fans would have a problem with someone who repaired their problems and instead want a lazy lump on a log who doesn't do anything. We Are.................

No, Moose, SJU fans bitch and moan about everything and everyone!!
So the years of therapy and good behavior at his high school gig and AAU means absolutely nothing? There is no redemption of people? Ok
Thanks Valgoth and Simply Red - Moose, MR and we others, RawdogNYC...
I guess some on this board have never erred or been hurtful to others; I guess some have had no need to learn even at any age of life.
Well stated points imo.

Also in regard to color and how it is used against other schools and other coaches - no way to prevent any tactic - Chris is a coach with a tremendous background who has played with and been supportive of every shade of color. Let others try to use that against him - we will still get our share - and already have been - of good student/athletes who want to play under CM, at SJU in NYC. We only need a few recruits a year.
GO Storm.

So Mullin wants this, Matt and Greg want this, I can only presume Coach Rice wants this, some of our top recruits most certainly want this, and most of the fans want this. I ask again - why hasn't this happened by now?

Guessing it has something to do with whether MR wants this. Mullin clearly has loyalty to his guys and I would suspect he won't pull the trigger until Richmond's status is fully determined.

Human nature is as predictable as it is funny. Sure as the season’s run, a bunch of posters will gripe whenever Rice (if on board) misses on a highly touted recruit.
But that doesn’t erase how important his local and AAU ties, the coaching experience, bench presence and D-wise tactics, he’ll also bring to our program.
Given the multiple variables and options in college recruiting these days, success in Major D1 recruiting may be akin to baseball—you’re great if you succeed on one of three attempts.
Let’s go Johnnies.
Tea leaves;

Mitch absence may be an indication of his willingness to move back to the Special Assistant spot or he opts to move on. It will be interesting to see what staff is out there during July open period. I would be surprised if Mitch is one.

Rice may be only candidate for a AC position. I still believe even if he comes, it will be after he completes his AAU gig in July.

Lastly, my tea leaves may suck. :)
If the Rice to St. John's as an Assistant Coach actually happens, Rice not wanting to leave prior to the completion of the July AAU competitions is as plausible a reason for the delay in it getting done as any. I can understand his not wanting to leave the kids high and dry before this really important evaluation period.

I’m hopeful that Mitch’s position change will be fair as well as acceptable to him, and Rice comes on board as our new full time AC.
Judging by the time creases on this and the fan board buzz on this, it’s obvious many discussions have occurred and at the end of the day, adults have agreed that ‘reality’ has to be acknowledged, changes have to be made, and careers and friendships have to adjust and mature.

Yes, I thought so also.
We shall see.

People have mental issues sometimes.. Call it a disease if you will.. Why do we have no problem giving players a second/third chance, but are opposed to giving a coach one? He has spent the last half decade getting help for whatever created the demon in his head that he was battling.. I deal with a horrible case of panic disorder where if not for therapy and medicine, I wouldn't be able to leave my house. It's not something i could control. It's not someone I wanted to be.. However whatever receptors in my brain are misfiring causes me this issue.. This guy has gotten the help he needs. No reason not to give him a chance. What he did was wrong, however he hit rock bottom and has spent the last 5 years working on getting his shit together.. I'm sure we've all done effed up things at some point in our lives that we were forgiven for..
Well said rawdog and bravo. However, keeping one's stuff together also is connected to people places and things. Fran eventually stayed away from coaching. I've had recovering people in a training program I ran for very specialized counseling come to me and say "I'm going to finish the program but I realize the counseling is not a good fit for me." I knew one guy who was a very successful bank executive who decided he could not stay in that job and control his alcoholism, moved on to run a church connected retreat center. I don't know Mike Rice except for what is on the video and his record at Rutgers. I wish him well but don't know if we ae good for him and vice versa or if he is the best candidate for at St. John's AC job, which is pretty high up on the coaching ladder.

I lost track of Mitch Richmond after the NBA championship. Can ANYONE here provide any information regarding anything he has done that is St. John's basketball related in the past three months on his full time assistant coach's salary?
Finally, this situation does not fall only on MR's feet but reflects a bigger issue.

Is it possible that the Rice deal has already been made? Only the announcement is delayed, pending AAU season's completion, what to do with Mitch, etc.?

So many variables are in play; it is impossible for 'outsiders' to weigh in on what is best for any individual in 'recovery'.
It's all guesswork.
I think and hope that his 5 years of therapy, rehabbing, and reviving his career on the sidelines and in practices with Top AAU HS players indicates he has things under control and will be an asset to any Div 1 College program he joins.
Let's go Johnnies.

I obviously disliked what I saw from Rice 5 years ago, but I'd be okay with hiring him. I wouldn't be okay with hiring him as a HC, but as AC sure. Also, since Mullin is leading and is known for being pretty well tempered, I know he would keep him in line if necessary.

As long as the players are okay with him, I don't see a problem hiring him. He probably would've helped last year during the 11 game losing streak. Experience helps.

Real good points and similar to what I was thinking. Rice has eased back to work by coaching high school and AAU which while at a high level is not nearly as stressful as coaching Rutgers was. Perhaps an assistant coaching job is the next step. If Mullin is willing to give him a chance and Rice feels he can handle it, maybe it works out. Only time will tell.

Are you his therapist? I wouldn’t put much stake in a guy running an AAU program for a few years without a hitch. People can be redeemed but people can also be in opposition to their beloved team hiring a coach who is an abusive and discriminatory child.

Good point, considering your avatar is a junkie.
