It’s one thing to be excited by the current roster and our prospects for next season—particularly if Mustapha is eligible—but it is a bit myopic to not realize that the Staff needs to change to better position the program for the future.
I won’t belabor it, because I’m truly excited by this team, on paper, but 1 season’s success is a highlight, not a legacy.
Totally agree. I have high hopes for this year, but concerns about the staff's approach to recruiting and the future.
I think the staff deserves credit for the incredible job done on the transfer market. However, their recruiting, developing and retaining of high school kids has been another story. From 2015-2017, Mullin has had 10 high school recruits sign with the program (Lovett, Yakwe, Sima, Ellison, Mussini, Ponds, Freudenberg, Wilson, Trimble, Diakate). All but two have left the program for whatever reason.
Villanova is the blueprint of how St. John’s can sustain long-term success. Villanova signed 8 high school recruits over that same period. All 8 were on their roster this past year, and three got drafted. Villanova had only one transfer player on their entire roster last year. By contrast, SJU has 8 transfers on the roster for this upcoming season.
Clearly, Villanova's recent success is a factor. But the point is the same The staff needs to do a better job of recruiting, developing and retaining high school recruits.
