St. John's to Leave Nike?

If they go with St. John's Johnnies, I'm jumping ship. I'm sure Baylor could use another fan.

LOL!
Media have been calling us the Johnnies for decades. It has never been adopted as the official nickname but it is part of who we are. The official nickname will always have some "red" in it so do not worry as you will not have to change your handle.
Knowing we need to keep it red, Steve Lavin suggested the SJ Redwoods. Being a west coast guy, he was reminded there's no redwood within 3,000 miles. Being a movie fan, he then suggested the Red Dawn but was reminded it was an apocalyptic name.
Being a fan of spicy food, I think the Red Devils would be cool but a priest friend suggested some fans would be conflicted with Saint and Devil associated with our name.
I also like the TV show "The Mentalist" and thought his nemesis Red John could be a possibility. There is a John, he is red and he is mean. Any takers before the booze wears off?

Given one of the meanings of "John", that could be problemmatic.

How about dropping the "Red" from Red Storm and just going with a simpler St John's Storm??? Sounds cooler. Nobody asking what a "Red Storm" is... Etc.

People are still asking what a Hoya is. :)

I could go with Storm.

By the way, I was told that we might be going back to SJU instead of STJ.

If you say St. John's Johnnies it sounds weird but if you say the Johnnies of St. John's it sounds more normal. Just can't have back to back John/Johnnies. Too bad we can't just go back to Redmen...it's nice to see the Redskins owner refusing to change the name because of tradition. Sometimes people have to suck it up and realize that tradition is more important than the right to not feel offended. How is it even degrading in the first place? I can see the Cleveland Indian making a cartoonish depiction stereotyping them, but what's wrong with an honest depiction? If a team was named the Fightin Olives resembling Italians I wouldn't care...olive skin is a typical feature of many southern Italians. So what? It's not like we used to have the name "Redskin Savages" or anything truly offensive.

I really think that the "Red" part of Red Storm is what polarized people against the name. The St. John's Storm is a fine name and tons can be done with marketing that. Red Storm is ok, but I like the simpler "Storm" better. Cleaner name. No confusion nor laughter about the fictional nature of a red storm ala the SBU "Seawolves". SJU or STJ I don't care as much, but I will always refer to St. John's as SJU. It's all I've ever known.

Pittsburgh.

Just leave it what it's always been. A name that rolls off the tongue. A name that evolved naturally - the Johnnies. And if you have to, you can add of St. John's.

I don't have a problem with Johnnies necessarily. It's not the most natural moniker, but it works well enough.
More importantly, I'm 100% convinced that coach Lavin favors "Johnnies" because from day 1 he's constantly referred to the team that way. Very rarely if ever have I heard him say "Red Storm".

If they do make a logo and mascot change though, I just hope we're successful this season and next, because whether the logo is good or bad it will gain traction if we're winning. It's not a perfect analogy, but I remember the Mets made the switch to black uniforms the year they acquired Piazza. The team won for the next couple of years and the black unis became acceptable.
Same thing to some degree with the Giants. They had the slanted "Giants" with the line under it through all the success in the late 80s and early 90s, and in 2000 they switched to the simple, white, NY. Strahan and Tiki took us to the Superbowl that year though, and nobody really noticed that the uniforms had changed.

If we win, people will subconsciously accept the logo change, no matter what it is.

There are tons of Wildcats and Bulldogs and such. But there is a school called St. John's Johnnies. Its not like it was Idaho Johnnies and we copied it. We are pretty much ripping off the same nickname from a school with the same name.

Killjoy Moose ( how do you insert a smiley face on thia site ). But I'm sure we had it first and it's not the Saint John's Johnnies it's the Johnnies ... (if you need to add ) of St. John's .

By the way, there's a pretty cool site if anybody ever wants to see the history of a team's logo and uniforms...

good gravy those logo's are terrible. Can't we find someone with an original idea. I would love to go back to the Indian Logo but that isn't going to happen. I even have an old ball cap from back in the day that i refuse to get rid of with that logo on it.

can someone tell me where the horse idea came from?

Sometimes the D-III school Saint John's comes up when I search for us. It's weird how they even exist. But as a school and especially a sports influence they are about as far on the bottom as you can get. It's like a small school being called UCONN. Obviously people only care about the REAL UCONN. We are the only legitimate St. John's in the country and we have Big East brand identity. I wouldn't worry about that other school. If anything they should be paying us royalties...I'm sure we were founded before them. If we can take back SJU from St. Joe's (a program we are way more relevant than), then surely we can take Johnnies back from some little school.

You should know it doesnt matter who was founded first. If they chose St. John's Johnnies and registered it before us (which they have) then they might have some issues with it. Can we pay THEM? Sure. I'd rather be original.

D-3...different world. Nobody has ever heard of that school outside of its immediate area and some sports fanatics like us. Johnnies is the only acceptable change to me. Either leave it as is or go with what we have always referred to ourselves as. Who gives a crap (small pun intended) if a few losers connect it to a john and bring pictures of toilets. "Flush the Johnnies" doesn't even make sense as nobody calls a toilet a Johnnie.

Hey, I'm all for going back to Redmen. It's who we are. Should never have been changed. Maybe now that Harrington is gone, we have a shot, but I doubt it. Purists would love it. Just make the mascot some big red tomato like Syracuse's and stay away from any native American depictions. I don't think there's any shot the we go back to it though unfortunately.

Thats what they did before they changed the name to Redstorm. They took away the Indian Mascot. I too, like the name Redmen and the Indian Mascot, but those days are gone . How about Reds.

That's actually a great idea...no sarcasm at all. Simple, and true to our roots. Also makes it much easier making a creative mascot. Like someone said before, I'd just make a big red blob like Otto the Orange...the doofy ones always seem to get the most attention like WKU's blob or the Phillie Phanatic. Hopefully our mascot won't accidentally drop a woman into a pool and break her limbs though like the Phanatic.
