St. John's Big 12 rumor/Pitino & Prime

I don't believe so. There used to be a big rivalry with Hofstra back in the day. The football players from that last team are still bitter about what happened. Football got too expensive, especially since Title 9 was enacted. I think the athletic scholarship ratio has to be similar to the student male/female population ratio. (It's been a long time since I heard that so I don't know if that's still the case.) Football eats up a lot of scholarships so to balance it out you either add women's sports or cut men's.

When I was there in the early 70s, we had rugby and hockey; those were club teams.
I graduated in 92 and it definitely wasn't a club sport then. I think St Johns eliminated several sports teams back then around the time MCN is referring to then but I definitely could be off on that

School had to cut programs because they had to adhere to Title IX. I think men’s swimming was also cut at the time.

The football program was solid. They had a decent rivalry against Hofstra.

They had a very good team during my freshman year with QB Scott Scezny (spelling it wrong), RB Anthony Russo, and WR McDermott (forgot his first name). They also had a guy last name Tricario who handled both PK and punting duties.

Football moved from club status to DIII in 1978 I believe.

Army will have a good year every so often, but it's a bottom FBS school. Missouri was 6-7 overall and 3-5 in conference that year. The fact that they even went to a bowl game says a lot about how many bowl games there are. Army had to use the triple option and gimmicky schemes (before the cut block changes were implmented recently) to mitigate the difference in talent. They still do that now but have added more screens and spread out the personnel. But you won't find a beter place to take in a footbal game that Michie Stadium in October.

Uconn is the most ridiculous program to rate in modern NCAA football. They won the Big East championship in 2010! Ten years before that they were an FCS school (referred to as D1-AA at the time). They haven't had a winning season since that championship year.
As I said, I don't know what UConn’s schedule is but that is a lot of poor teams. Part of the problem is they are independent and there are less and less ”buy” games from the bigger programs due to conference expansion, especially later in the year. i knew they were at worst competitive when they made the jump to FBS (I forgot they actually won the Big East in 2010). I don’t know what happened and why they couldn’t sustain that momentum (did they draw decent crowds?). It may be just be that schools in the Northeast like Syracuse, Rutgers, Boston College and UCONN do not have enough talented players in the region (and have a hard time keeping the top ones) nor can they attract enough from other areas to maintain a consistent representative and competitive teams.

To your point about bowl games, there are about 40 of them which is probably at least 20 too many.

I haven’t been to Michie since 2018 or 2019 but agreed, it is a great place to catch a college game.

I thought football was a club sport.
Football was D1-AA (now referred to as D-1 FCS) and a member of the Northeast Conference with teams like Stony Brook, Albany, Sacred Heart, Central Connecticut State, and Monmouth. Essentially good enough to lose 35-7 to a decent to lower FBS program week one. St. John's was going to play at San Diego State before the school announced it would disband the program after one final season.

They moved to the MAAC for the final season, which was a non-scholarship conference that had teams like Iona and Marist. A lot of kids transferred to Hofstra. I know at least one was all-conference there. Almost nobody stayed when they moved to the non-scholarship conference. The school also axed four other sports at the same time to get in line with Title IX.

UConn was favored by a touchdown against FIU. They lost by a touchdown, and are now 0-3 when Vegas expected them to go 2-1. They have 9 games remaining and would need to go 6-3 to be bowl eligible, but ESPN projects that they'll go 3-6 and finish 3-9. Disastrous season after having made a bowl last year at 6-6.

Compare that to Colorado, which last week drew almost 9 million viewers against Nebraska on Fox. UConn isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

I don’t even follow college football and I’m looking all over for the Colorado game then see that it’s on at 10pm. Jesus that’s late :)

I've never actually watched a UConn football game (like most people), but for the past decade I've checked in on their boxscores in hopes that their football program would deteriorate. I almost stopped caring until last August when their football coach started talking about going to a Power 5 conference... and then their AD, President, etc. continued the embarrassing PR campaign. The last couple months couldn't have gone any worse for their football supporters.

Outside of realignment implications I couldn't care less about college football, but I do agree about Colorado. I'll catch some of their game against #13 Oregon next week on ABC. I think seeing a popular coach reviving a dead program in record time has something to do with my interest. :)

Crazy loss today at home in one of the most winnable games on their schedule. Could easily drop 5 or even 6 of their next 6 games.

This is starting to look like a 2-3 win season for them at a pivotal moment in realignment.

Did you make it to the end? It might be one of the things I most love about living on the West Coast, although those early games after a late night are rough.

Fell asleep start of second half then woke up toward the end

Difference is that Colorado is still football country where the sport is big. They had been to a national championship game in the past. It’s more of a program that has fallen from grace than a never has been.

I decided to watch the Colorado game to what the hoopla was about and glad I did. The Colorado "Sanders" played an exciting, if too close, game-major rivalary vs. Col. St. Deion's kids responsible for all TD's and and the two 2 extra points. The son who plays defense returned an intercept for TD and the QB son threw 4 TD's and the two 2pointers, including a TD and a 2 pointer with about a minute to go to tie the game. During the game was seen adjusting one of his kids neck chains--he loves the Bling and how it should be worn.

They said Colorado is selling merch as quick as they can get it on the shelves. I get the feeling the Sanders impact is akin the the Rick imapct at St. Johns.

I still remember Sanders soaking Tim McCarver. I still think Prime is a punk.

I know it's not the same exact situation - regular season college basketball games never receive as much attention as college football. St. John's won't break any TV ratings records. That aside though I do think there's a lot of similarities.

Colorado won the football offseason by hiring Sanders and St. John's won the basketball offseason by hiring Pitino. Colorado peaked in the early 90s and we peaked in the mid 80s. Both Colorado and St. John's have won their conference only ONCE since 1991 (2001 and 2000). Colorado has made only 2 bowls since 2007, and we've been to the Tournament 3 times in that span.

As you mentioned Colorado does have that National Championship which makes a difference for sure (it was a "split" decision though- Coaches selected Georgia Tech), but outside of that I actually think both are extremely similar in terms of (lack) of success, especially recently. If we start the season the way Colorado has, then I expect us to be the biggest story in college basketball for some time.

Colorado is being wildly overrated early. I think Prime gets it done there (before eventually moving on) but it won’t be this year. His sons are very good and Travis Hunter is absurd, but I think they will lose 2-3 straight games at some point this year.

I was out and didn’t start watching until I got home at about 12:30 AM EST. Watched from there to the end and some of the post game stuff. Well worth it.

Definitely overrated but very entertaining. Shedeur the QB and Hunter are early round draft picks if not first roundera. Defense is shaky as is the Offensive line but some talented skill players.
