St. John’s (2020-21)

Kid could surprise though playing time at the point may be hard to come by this season with Posh and Dunn.

Woefully lacking over the years is for us to have a highly reliable outside shooter. Our former coach was one, but how long ago was that.

It sounds lame to say, but clanking and not swishing has been the norm not the exception for us for way too long.

Vince Cole had excellent shooting stats at JC level, 51% fg, 45% from three and 90% from the foul line last year while averaging over 20 ppg. Remains to be seen if he has an adjustment period going to Div 1, but he can shoot it for sure.
You are correct to identify that the difference between JC and D1 will alter shooting %. Defense is bigger and quicker, and shooter have less time to get a shot off against longer and quicker competition. The result is more shots challenged from the outside, and shooting % likely goes down.
Good players are food players and shooters for that matter know their distance. It’s evident even when we play patsies that have good shooters. I don’t agree with that for the most part because most good D1 teams still have deficits on perimeter defense. He’s a first team juco AA and obviously had shooting talent: let’s see what he can do before declaring deficiencies. The level change didn’t seem to effect Hatten, Hearst, Bootstrap amongst others and we’ve done well before with jucos. This staff is particularly adept in that department:

With Dunn a senior, considering his performance last year, and Posh’s talent, McGriff’s might be limited this year but likely grow when Dunn is gone. In addition I think Dunn is really a combo and will get time at both spots opening more for mcGriff who’s a pure PG type.

With the new rule, id assume dunn is coming back for another year.

I think that the guys who have the most success at D1 shooting threes have these 2 qualities: 1) make good decisions in terms of shot selection 2) quick triggers.

I was watching some video of the 69-73 Knicks, and although the game has changed, the knick shooters all had very quick releases and needed only a split second to catch and shoot.

Don't obfuscate my words to be critical of this kid or make a blanket statement about juco players not being able to adjust to D1. Obviously some can and some can't and I believe the attributes I outlined differentiate the haves from have nots.

For those that care about such things, St. John's will have Greg Williams Jr., Julian Champagne and Rasheem Dunn for Big East's virtual media day. #sjubb

Small practice report- Posh and McGriff are really pushing Dunn. Both are scrappy defenders.
Posh has a motor that never stops. Lock up defender on the perimeter. Uptempo and shifty. Both him and Posh will have a chance for quality minutes because Dunn will be able to play off the ball.
Wusu has the build of a Linebacker. Physically imposing. Competes with forwards some days. Will find some minutes. Doesn’t back down. Tough.
Toro can really pass the ball.
Isaiah Moore- long and SKILLED. Will be different having him and Toro down low as opposed to Roberts and Steere. That being said..
Everybody won’t be able to play. We are a legit 12 deep. Two I see playing the least is Caraher and Roberts. We have a lot more skilled group. More shooters. Super deep. Practices have been battles. These guys are competing hard.
Staff has a quiet confidence about this group. They will surprise.

If you can play, Anderson will find you minutes. May be less than you want but if you produce he will find you more; old school and the best school. I have heard very similar things to Big Red's report - players realize you EARN minutes with CMA and that fact alone makes practices tough and productive. You can have all the one and done 5 stars with one eye out the door recruits you want, I'll take the hungry junk yard dogs.
Julian looking great in practice is feedback. Staff very pleased with Moore as well apparently.

Even in those few clips of Moore from his intro, you can tell what a gazelle this kid is for his size. He’s making shots to distance as well. Excited to see him play as should definitely help us up front.

With kids as skinny as Moore, you obviously worry about effectiveness and wearing down competing against high-major front lines. That said, the apparent length and athleticism for his size are intriguing. And if he the skillset to match that, he might be a very effective player.

Hybrid 4 it appears & I trust staff will be be creative using him.

Hey Big Red ...... great post.

In CMA I trust.

I can’t wait for the 2020- 2021 season to start.

The word I get is slim and strong. Tries to dunk everything. We will be a different team once he gets acclimated.

He doesn’t look as skinny as his juco films which is good. He’s talented it seems and hrs been a long time since we had a guy that continuously flushes it home but can also shoot out to distance. Looking forward to him and honestly I’ve never seen lanky bigs wear down in college ball. In cma’s style we have the depth not to have to worry. His height will come in handy coupled with Toro and Roberts as we will have enough size to put out there not to be dwarfed.

Yes to all of that. He’s long, runs like a deer at 6-10, 6-11, tries to dunk everything, and can step out and knock down the j. We had no big last year with this skill set. The way Toro passes the ball has been a real revelation as well.
I’m legit pumped up for this team to hit the floor. By the end of the season, they will really be clicking on all cylinders. These guys are gonna play to the bitter end. I don’t know how many teams will be able to withstand. This team will be special guys. Listen to me.

Really wish I could have your enthusiasm, but I learned when it comes to sju, don't or you'll be disappointed once again.
I want to believe that this year is the year that the turning around begins. Some are just on the side of caution.
I hope we shine this year. Wear down all the top b.e basketball schools, and make them want the game to be over.
Just One request guys: sweep Yukon and welcome them back to the b.e.
