St. John’s (2020-21)

Good addition to schedule

Sources: St. John's and Boston College are finalizing an agreement to play a neutral site game at Mohegan Sun on November 30th.

There we go! Not a juggernaut by any means, but at least it's a power opponent. Not sure how Boston is easier than say Rutgers, but whatever I'll take it.

Look at McGriffs pass in this video, holy freaking crap.[/quote]

I think a lot of people are sleeping on McGriff - he has the potential to be a real fan favorite - and a real headache for opposing PGs. Not saying he's going to be the starter or first team BE or anything like that, but I suspect he will be a VERY valuable contributor in the minutes he gets.

Yup. St Johns had 0 true point guards last year. Now we have 2. That will help this team tremendously.

Just “maybe” Rutgers already has their plate full, are eyeing something else or available dates don’t match up.

So updated non-conference schedule looks like this...

Nov 25th - 27th - Manhattan, LaSalle, TBA
Nov 30th - Boston College
Dec 3rd - Texas Tech
Dec 8th - Fordham
TBA - Sacred Heart

Conference Play starts December 11th.

Really good addition considering the constraints. A bottom tier ACC school is far better than adding a 5th or 6th cupcake. We should beat them but not a game our guys will be able to sleepwalk through. Great job to make a game like this happen.

Would be nice to get another local school, maybe Hofstra, to fill out the Nov. 25-27 round robin.

I am not as clued into the new guys as most of you on this site, so I have a question: are any of the new players "lights out", dead-eye shooters?

Woefully lacking over the years is for us to have a highly reliable outside shooter. Our former coach was one, but how long ago was that.

It sounds lame to say, but clanking and not swishing has been the norm not the exception for us for way too long.

Only dead eye shooters at St. John's play for the rifle team who I believe have won a NC in their history.

Vince Cole had excellent shooting stats at JC level, 51% fg, 45% from three and 90% from the foul line last year while averaging over 20 ppg. Remains to be seen if he has an adjustment period going to Div 1, but he can shoot it for sure.

You are correct to identify that the difference between JC and D1 will alter shooting %. Defense is bigger and quicker, and shooter have less time to get a shot off against longer and quicker competition. The result is more shots challenged from the outside, and shooting % likely goes down.

Put it this way...if we don't do well next year I suppose it will be due to lack of scoring and especially 3 PT shooting. We definitely need more shooters. My biggest concern at this point.
