St. John’s (2020-21)

As expected;

Sources: St. John's will not participate in the 2020 Preseason NIT in Orlando. Rest of field currently includes Arizona, Cincinnati, and Texas Tech.
Disappointing.

This is a hanging slider for Michael Scott.

The obvious:
Disappointments are part of life
I trust the decision makers here
Better to skip a single tournament
Then risk the entire season
And risk even one of our kids getting the virus - could never justify that etc.
all the best!

i'm having a hard time understanding why the school is still soliciting season ticket renewals. i know for them it's essentially interest free money on loan, but why even entertain it?!

indoor gatherings are band. that's not going to change any time soon.

Siena also pulled out of their Orlando event, and they cited New York's mandatory 2 week quarantine upon return as the reason for it. I'm guessing that's what went into our thinking, as well.

Mohegan Sun wants to host a few other MTE's in a bubble. Maybe we can get into one of those.
Considering we're limited to 7 non-conference games and travel is limited gotta hope we can get Rutgers or Syracuse on the schedule. I like all the local names being thrown out there (Hofstra, Iona, Temple all sound good) but the truth is there just aren't that many non-Big East teams in the area that would move the needle for us if we're on the bubble.

Rutgers, Syracuse would be seen as signature OOC wins. Any ACC opponent would be nice honestly and Syracuse is the only one that will probably be mid-pack that's an actual possibility. Even teams that look like they'll finish at the bottom of the conference like BC or Pitt (The Champagnie Bowl would be fun) would be more helpful on a tourny resume than Manhattan or St. Francis. Seems like Orlando tourny and Gavitt games are goners. Little confidence the Texas Tech game will survive which is a shame because I think we could really use it.
The danger of scheduling 2 or 3 tough OOC games is that should we come in at 8-12 in conf, or even 9-11, 5-2 or 4-3 OOC may eliminate us from NIT consideration. I think minimally we want to make the NIT and adding UCONN to the conference adds two tough games.

Andy Katz has us as a play-in game 12 seed for NCAA tourney. Damn. If that happens, expect a big recruiting uptick and pandemonium among fanbase (in good way).

From St. John's:

Dear Johnnies,

On behalf of St. John’s Athletics, I pray this email finds you and your loved ones well.

While we are reminded daily that the world changed in March, upcoming sports schedules are undetermined as of this writing. However, St. John’s commitment to those who wear the Red and White remains as strong as ever.

Our student-athletes have returned to campus under strict COVID-19 health regulations. Keeping our student athletes healthy and safe is a top University priority.

Perhaps more than any other time in recent memory, St. John’s Athletics is in need for everyone to rally together to support our students. Every gift makes a direct impact. I am excited to introduce our “Johnnies United” Campaign to provide the necessary resources to assist our student-athletes reach their goals during these unprecedented times.

Your gift will provide direct support to St. John’s Athletics. The money raised from this appeal will go directly to benefit student-athletes as they prepare to compete despite unforeseen obstacles.

A gift of $100 or more entitles you to Red White Club membership and benefits.

While all spring seasons were cut short due to COVID-19, our student-athletes showed their St. John’s heart and grit by excelling in the classroom and in our communities:

Red Storm student-athletes shined in the classroom, finishing the 2019-20 year with a 3.51 cumulative grade point average, including a 3.72 in the spring semester.

Four St. John’s athletic teams – women’s golf, women’s fencing, women’s track & field, women’s cross country – received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for finishing in the top 10 percent of their respective sport in multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR). In total, 11 teams scored better than the national average for APR in their sport.

A program-record 230 student-athletes were named to the 2019-20 BIG EAST All-Academic Team, while a conference-best six St. John’s sports programs – baseball, men’s basketball, women’s golf, men’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, softball - received BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Awards for posting the highest grade point average in the league for their respective sport.

So while these days are uncertain, there is one constant: St. John’s athletes EXPECT TO WIN.

I hope you will join your fellow Johnnies in supporting our 350 student athletes with a gift today.

We Are New York’s Team ... We Are St. John’s!

With gratitude,

Nick Vendikos ‘91SVC
Senior Director of Athletic Development

Was told Big East isn't really close to releasing schedule. hope is for teams to play 4-5 league games before new year, but that may not be possible for everyone.

The St. John's MTE will be Nov. 25-27, per source. #sjubb

Bryant just recently agreed to be the last team in the MTE at St. John's, per source. @JonRothstein first. Will also include Manhattan and LaSalle. Three games. #sjubb

Not much of a barometer to assess how our team will perform against Big East competition but a good opportunity to begin to integrate our five new players into the system under game conditions.

They should rename this: St Johns Cupcake Invitational

I agree. This is replacing the OOC games against, Wagner, St Peters etc. Smart move.

This reminds of a quote from Army coach, Les Wothke, after the '82 Lapchick Tournament where SJU drubbed Army 81-38. He said "They invite three teams that they know they can beat and call it a Classic." Awesome!
