St. John’s (2020-21)

If you can play Penn you can play Princeton. Add it to the list. Throw in Marist for MZ as well.

I’d enjoy a Hofstra matchup
Hofstra would probably be the "sexiest" matchup possible if you're looking strictly at quality opponents within driving distance that would not require either a hotel stay or a flight. I also wouldn't mind seeing a game against Iona. If we follow those guidelines, our non-conference slate would be very weak and could hurt our NCAA chances if we are a bubble team. Other schools may be willing to fly to play tougher non-league games or may have more formidable opponents within driving range.

Regardless, I'm all for safety first and would be thrilled just to see college basketball being played this season.
On the flip side they'd likely be 6-1 or 7-0 in non conference. And also to clarify NCAA has indicated max games are 27 this season so 7 is the max non conference a BE team can play. Don't think they are taking "exempt" tournament exceptions this year either.
Because playing 27 games plus conference tournaments plus post season tournaments are a lot safer than playing 28, 29, or 30 games. That would be too risky what with the virus and all.

Didn't mean to shut down the board so early tonight. Guess everybody went to sleep early tonight for some reason. No posts post 10pm. What is this JJ?

Tip of the cap, sir thank you! Would love to see it. I believe Marist is still obviously supposed to be pretty bad, but not as bad this year. In other words, some bit of a pulse. Such a shame what happened after Matt Brady left. Actually had some legit teams around 2007-2009. Almost beat SJ in the holiday festival I believe but SJ won by a basket or two. Then after Brady left just totally fell off the face of the earth. I used to go to a lot of the women's games. They made a Sweet 16 in 2007 upsetting Ohio State and scared the hell out of a ranked Oklahoma team that came on campus to play us. That was pretty cool to see a huge name school like that come on campus. Doesn't happen much.

My daughter played AAU for CTK LIberty Belles with the guard who had a great NCAA tourney for Marist.

I would throw Stony Brook on the list as well

Yes winner plays for keeps once and for all. Wonder if we ever considered buying it out from them? I mean, they will never have the brand that we do with the huge difference in conference affiliation. Repole? You up?

St. Joe’s is a good school.

I have a number of friends whose kids have gone there and enjoyed it. St. Joe’s acquired the grounds of Episcopal Academy around 2005 which allow it to expand its cramped campus.

St. Joe’s grads are passionate about the school.

Considering we're limited to 7 non-conference games and travel is limited gotta hope we can get Rutgers or Syracuse on the schedule. I like all the local names being thrown out there (Hofstra, Iona, Temple all sound good) but the truth is there just aren't that many non-Big East teams in the area that would move the needle for us if we're on the bubble.

Rutgers, Syracuse would be seen as signature OOC wins. Any ACC opponent would be nice honestly and Syracuse is the only one that will probably be mid-pack that's an actual possibility. Even teams that look like they'll finish at the bottom of the conference like BC or Pitt (The Champagnie Bowl would be fun) would be more helpful on a tourny resume than Manhattan or St. Francis. Seems like Orlando tourny and Gavitt games are goners. Little confidence the Texas Tech game will survive which is a shame because I think we could really use it.

Agree...this is what I feared about the impact of COVID. If we surprise and have a very good season but no real signature wins we will be kept out of tourney and it would be a waste. Gotta get at least 1 or 2 P5's in there.

Yeah, I can definitely see this team finishing 9-11 in conference and having a handful of wins over St Peter's and LIU to try to convince a committee to put us in over a teams from the South or Mid-Atlantic regions with more quality opponents to choose from. Fingers crossed we can put together something that's at least reasonable.

For those advocating playing the Philly schools as part of our OOC schedule, keep in mind that St. Joe’s, Penn, Temple, LaSalle are part of the Philly Big five, so that’s four OOC games for each school taken up already.

I’d love to play Syracuse but they don’t seem to want to play/lose to NY’s team...

No, because they eliminated the first three weeks of the season and want to keep to the original dates for post season tourneys and dance.

College hoop used to start around Thanksgiving and they fit the games in for years.

Isn’t that when the Lapchick tournament was played?

Rothstein

As expected;

Sources: St. John's will not participate in the 2020 Preseason NIT in Orlando. Rest of field currently includes Arizona, Cincinnati, and Texas Tech.
