St. John’s (2020-21)

I love Greg Williams game. However I don’t think he is one of the 5 best scoring options on the team and that is completely fine with me. With our jucos, the improvement of Earlington and Champaigne, dunn taking on less of ball handling responsibilities, plus the potential for LJ returning, we will have plenty of scoring options. Firmly believe Greg could average 7-8 points and still be our best all around player (sans LJ).
I’m one that confident this team could see 20 wins. But it’s kind of funny when you look at where these kids were ranked comin out of high school. This might be the first time in a long time that we don’t have one consensus top 100 kid on the team. I know a few of them are transfers that ended up gettin more recognition but still. Shows what a great coach and guys who play hard can do.

116 - Figueroa
155 - Williams
206 - Alexander
234 - Wusu
272 - Roberts
311 - Caraher
402 - Toro
435 - McGriff
NR - Champagnie
NR - Cole
NR - Dunn
NR - Earlington
NR - Moore
What it really shows is after the first tier of players how useless the rankings are

On the subject of the 20-21 season, how does everyone think the stats will play out next year?

Here's what I think it will look like...

Top 10 players that play in every game.
LJ - 14 PPG / 4 RPG
Cole - 12 PPG / 38% 3P% / 85% FT%
Dunn - 11 PPG / 4 APG
Champagnie - 10 PPG / 5 RPG
Earlington - 7 PPG / 6 RPG
Williams - 7 PPG / 2 APG
Toro - 6 PPG / 6 RPG
Alexander - 6 PPG / 3 APG
Moore - 5 PPG / 3 RPG
Caraher - 3 PPG / 2 RPG

Situational Players (several DNPs)
Roberts
Wusu
McGriff

I think this will be a team that averages around 80 PPG. They have the scoring firepower.
It’s now or never for Williams and his time to shine as a shooting guard. Not time to be timid any more and if healthy needs to show us what he can do going to the hoop and shooting from the outside. I can see him doing better than 7 if he keeps up the trajectory he was on. The kid has the tools and it’s time for him to hit the next level imo and take the place of Heron who was limited last year by injury as well. Lots of tools on this team for sure. I’d also say I think If Roberts is healthy he will not be a situational player and Wusu is a very versatile kid who is going to be capable of more than we think as a freshman. I honesty don’t remember a SJU this deep overall. Literally no dead weight from
1-13 that I can see, even if we are not star-studded at this point.
Only one basketball and limited minutes. All 13 guys can't have a big role. Most guys I've seen CMA play as part of his main rotation is 11 guys, and that was on his 14-15 team that was REALLY deep and talented that won 27 games, the 11th man was a 4-star recruit, and he really only played when someone was in foul trouble or a blowout. CMA typically will find his best 9-10 guys by conference play and roll with them.

IMO, it will be an uphill battle for Roberts coming back from injury competing against 2 guys that are more offensively polished than he is. And Wusu, he's the lowest rated guy coming in, and will be playing SG behind Cole and Williams, I can't see him beating either of those guys out for minutes.

Agree with Wusu. I see him as the replacement for greg williams/cole when they move on in 2 years. I do not see wusu being a major contributor until his junior year.

Wusu is an underrated kid and underrated shooter. Can’t be left open because he’ll sink it which will get him some minutes. He’s also a more willing rebounder than some of our other guards and physically extremely ready. He’s a dark horse to me because he’s got a great motor as well. We really won’t lose much going to our bench. Got a lot of great motors on this team that will only thrive when they start playing for mike Anderson.

Which of our guards aren’t willing rebounders? Thought they all did a great job from that position.

Wusu is more physical and built like a tank. You’re right, our guards do a good job but I think Wusu CMA play a bit of a hybrid role with his strength.

The bottom line with this topic and these posts - perhaps you will agree:
WE ARE IN GREAT SHAPE
and there is a legitimate basis for optimism.
Coach Mike Anderson has done nothing
( assembling his staff, recruiting, have his kids improve AND play with intensity ) to undermine a conclusion that we are in the best place we have been in fir two decades AND the future realistically bodes well for the Storm.
I doubt teams will relish us on their schedule - as has been the case all too often in past years.

Thanks Mike Anderson and Mike Cragg.
Stay safe everyone!

SJU's half court offense which has been lacking for the past six years should be much better next season. All the big east teams know each other like the back of their hands and the opposition strategy was simply don't worry about their inside game , they don't have one and concentrate on the two or three offensive threats they have forcing them to give up the ball or take a bad shot.
Toro won't make us forget Berry but if he can accomplish anything inside it will be an improvement and SJU will be able to put a better shooting team on the floor which may turn out to be a much improved outside shooting team.

If Roberts out for an extended period of time maybe redhisrt an option for him ?

One unintended consequence of @NBADraft being pushed back for early entry kids is that playing opportunities in Europe will be more limited by August & salaries much lower. Guys that get conned into staying in this draft will be filling @nbagleague rosters.

This will ultimately being LJ back

Not just Toro but a 6’10” Moore who adds some height and scoring ability up front and we should be better there. Couple that with improvement from The Duke, Champagnie etc and we will be a balanced team. If Cole is as good as I think he can be and LJ returns we can be a tough team to beat with a very balanced and deep roster. Gonna be an extremely fun year if we can get anywhere with this coronavirus thing in the next few months.

I am very excited about seeing Vince Cole next year. Very crafty scorer, underrated foot work when posting up, and a quick and fluid shot. He has a lot of moves in his bag. Hopefully he can gain some muscle without compromising his shot. If LJ comes back, he will see the opposing teams best defender initially until they see Vince Cole.

Great find. That made my day. I truely believe st johns has a chance to win the big east next year. Nobody wants to see these guys. What a great time to be a johnnies fan.
I think we can win the BET because we have the depth to do it. Hopefully LJ comes back and I think he will. Could be a real good year for us. We will wear on teams even more than we did this season.

Yup and the confidence of the Duke, Champaignie and Greg Williams should be through the roof. I really think this is going to be a special team next year.

This was my concern, which is why if we lose a kid late I wanted to add a grad big man.

Roberts still needs a lot of work. But I think he's too good to be buried as a fifth big man, which might not sit well with him. Might be better to let him get stronger and better for a year and wait out Toro so he can get minutes as an upperclassman. Plus would be one less body lost after 2021-22.
