St. John’s (2020-21)

Not quite, SS+G since your name didn't come up on my last post.
CMA not infallible, but seems to have keen eye for talent and incorporates new players well. He was high on Toro addition, so it may be prudent to judge his fit in a larger sample. That said, it is quite fair to have concerns re him fitting in to this uptempo game and anemic rebounding to date. Is he really this bad or can he help? I hope it is the former, but his minutes will shed light on that.
I hope it's the latter. ;) :)

Moore’s #s fine so far

6 games in- think its a decent enough sample size to know what we got... guys will improve as they get more reps/comfortable through the season, as they do every year- and from my completely inexperienced / armchair head coach perspective.... feel as though this should be the breakdown of floor-time (not accounting for foul trouble):
PG - 40 mins - Posh / McGriff (25/15) - i know Dunn can bring up the ball, but i like what i see in McGriff, solid handle and should spell Posh and not lose that defensive intensity, rather Dunn plays off ball.

SG / SF / PF - 120 mins - Here is where we have a lot of overlap and fluidity in positions (not always a good thing) - Julian (30) / Greg (25) / Dunn (20) / Cole (15) / Marcellus (15) / Wusu (15)

C- 40 mins - Point of weakness - but I feel we need a 6'9 body out there if we are going to be competitive rebounding. Moore (25) / Roberts (15). Coach must be down on Josh- but i'll take him everyday and twice on sundays over Toro- liking him less and less, with our style of play, each game.

If we decide to go real small as we've seen a couple times- with Julian at the 5, that will allow for more mins for Marcellus /Wusu etc...

Obviously game flow changes, but feel we need to always have one of the Julian /Greg /Dunn /Posh out on the floor to maintain a scoring/driving threat.

St. John's has sabotaged terrific OOC starts past few seasons w/brutal starts to @BIGEAST play: 1-6, 3-5, 0-11 and 2-4.

On paper, received a break w/opposing teams hitting pause and flipping schedule. Seton Hall/Georgetown more palatable than UConn/Butler.

Can they capitalize?

Hearing that St. John's is still planning to play a seventh non-conference game at some point. Uncertain when or who, but firmly planning to play another one. #sjubb

Actually, I was hoping that was the case after our game versus Seton Hall.

Brian - I like your post. Posh has played over 30 minutes to date and with the effort he brings, he may tire a little. What you lose with McGriff is the toughness that Posh plays defense. I agree that he should be the backup point guard. Perhaps when Dunn comes back it will be easier to rest Posh because he along with Williams can best replicate what Posh brings on the defensive end.

As for the forwards the one player that stands out to me is Cole. I hope to think the shooting we saw at the end of the Rider game can show up in our Big East games. If that is the case he needs to play a lot.

I also agree with your assessment of Roberts vs.Toro. Roberts is our only true interior defender which is one of our defensive weaknesses.

Overall I think this team is similar to last seasons . It has the potential to look very good but lacks the ability to do that consistently. They are an easy group to root for and hope they have more good days than bad days in what is an incredibly challenging season.

St. John's coach Mike Anderson tells me that Rasheem Dunn (concussion) will practice lightly today. Is through the protocol. Status is questionable for tomorrow against Seton Hall. #sjubb

Hopefully, the inconsistent play in the first 6 games can be used as a tool to sculpt a better team, rather than being an unmasking of a poor team.

I wouldn't be worried Knight.

CMA has a track record of his teams improving as the year goes along. I'd ay that's because it takes time to get everyone on the same page defensively and to figure out your best player combinations.

This team will get better defensively as the year progresses. Hopefully faster than last years squad since the majority of the roster spent last season in the system.

His face hit the floor going up for a loose ball.

Thanks. Those first few games didn't seem to be on TV for me so I missed them. I guess it happened in the few minutes he played this year?

I can't remember what thread it was on that Mike Z and a few others were posting under/over performing expectations of newcomers to date and I decided to post mine after OOC games were done so I'll post mine here:

Posh Anderson - slightly exceeded expectations I expected him to be very good as in my view he was a top 100 recruit but for junior year injury; what I wasn't sure of was whether he could come out of the gate as strong as he has, clearly one of team leaders, just needs to get better about stopping his man's penetration off the dribble;
Vince Cole - about as expected; his ability to score is exactly what I expected, he needs to relax and get used to speed of Div 1 but has shown a desire to play the right way and not force his shot make the right pass when teammates are open, will be a go to guy as season progresses imho;
Moore - about as expected; I thought he would need time (and added muscle) to be a guy deserving starting minutes and still think that's true; he is great at running the court and has a nice touch on mid range jumper but doesn't play great defense and in my mind is 7th or 8th mpg guy this year even if he starts;
Wusu - much better than expected; this kid is incredibly poised, excellent -passer and someone I already trust in late game situations;
McGriff - better than expected as I didn't expect a lot and he has shown good confidence whenever he gets a shot and don't mind seeing him playing in late game situations as trust him with the ball and on the foul line.
