While thinking about last year's team compared to this year's team the biggest difference to me so far is on the defensive side of the ball. The 23 to 0 run that ended the Big East tournament Georgetown victory stands as a prime example that our ability to shut down our opponent is what leads to success under Mike Anderson.
Nick Rutherford absolutely embodied that defensive intensity last season. LJ was also a contributor as a disruptor on defense too. I think that Dunn, Williams, Earlington and Champagnie all brought something to the table defensively as well.
This season Cole and Moore have shown definite flashes of what you want from JUCOs coming in to the D1 level offensively but have not established a strong defensive presence yet. The inside players collectively have not established a defensive identity as of yet either. Posh is probably our most critical piece because he is a whirling dervish at times on the defensive end and can disrupt opponents flow. Wusu can guard and has shown a commitment to defense that is refreshing. That said, there is a lack of team cohesiveness defensively and the guys have not meshed to establish that killer shut down mentality.
The leadership and intensity that Rutherford provided really set the tone defensively last season and it was infectious to the whole team. That dynamic needs to return in order for the team to be successful this season and it is up to the coach to figure out how to make it happen as the season moves forward.
