When I moved to Jersey in ‘63, I used to do the lawn and shovel for a couple down the street. The husband was a huge Met fan from jump street. He used to put $100 on them every season to win the WS. He passed on in ‘67 and she continued the bet every year in his memory and cashed in in ‘69. Hope the same lightning strikes for you

Thanks Logen. I hope so too. Thought it was worth a $50 gamble. Know it's a long shot, but figure anything is possible with this team, Covid, etc

St. John's is last in the Big East inFG percentage defense, 10th in 3-point percentage defense and last in PPG allowed. Johnnies are actually improved offensively from a year ago. #sjubb

St. John's is 111th in defensive efficiency this year. It was 53rd last year. Want to be close, or win tonight, it has to be much better defensively than it has been of late. #sjubb

Two things:

1)Can't lose to Georgetown at hone. A win doesn't mean a great season but can't get swept by a team pickee to finish lower than yourself when it is clear they are going to struggle against the better teams.

2) On that note I ask again: PC, SHU, Xavier, Marquette, UCONN, Creighton and Villanova. 14 games. What is the realistic record in those 14 games. I think 4 teams off hand are going to be sweeps. Maybe they split with other 3.

Who are the 4 that you think we’ll sweep? ;)

Ha...

I'm usually an optimist, but at this point I think our best case scenario is 8-12 in BE 13-13 overall (unless we can schedule 1 more OOC game). Maybe we can split with Hall, Gtown, Xavier, Butler, Providence, Marquette and sweep Depaul. Don't see us beating Nova, Creighton or UCONN.

Looks like there's a real chance that CMA's string of winning seasons may be in jeopardy
No more cupcakes left on the schedule as of now to add to the win column
We have to go at least 8-9 in the rest of the BE season in order to finish 13-13
That's certainly questionable at the moment

D-1 Council has passed the proposal in which all transfers are now eligible to play this season, per source.[/quote]. It might be worthwhile for our Recruiters to scour rosters of Top 50 programs to see who might come here . I noticed Creighton picked up a kid from Duke. O’’Connel who looked decent on the Court last night . Clearly , he isn’t a program building type player but , he knows how to play and must have shown Coach K something to have recruited him . While he averaged only 12 minutes a game at Duke , it’s pretty hard to dislodge the McD All America’s that Duke gets each year and doesn’t mean a player like that can’t play . McDermott must have given him a indication he would get time at Creighton . Last night was his first game . With the NCAA rule changes due to COVID for transfers , it might get us a decent player . Even if he only plays a year or 2 . It really isn’t much different than getting a JUCO. Look at what MCClung is doing at TT. And , while we don’t get a lot of info on West Coast teams , I’m sure Akingo is doing ok too. This may be a departure from what Coach A has done in the past but , it’s the reality of the game today .

hmm... well... fair to say, this team is not what I thought they would be....

I do not believe that CMA suddenly became a poor coach this season, his track record of success at every stop as head coach (even as an assistant) should more than indicate he the required skills / knowledge to do the job well.

The games with St. Peter's / SB / Rider should have been more than an indicator that this group might not be up to snuff to perform well vs BE comp. Think the loss of Figgy is more that I anticipated it would be, he was a certified alpha on the squad last year, and even with his flaws, its good to have a player that wants the ball with 8 seconds left in the shot clock. Heron- for as little as he played last year... we can't measure his experience/leadership could have provided.... he never walked away from the team, regardless how bleak his physical outlook was. And that team went 5-13 in conf last year...

It's one thing to have a coach provide leadership, its a completely different thing to have one of your peers provide that leadership. The team seems a bit disjointed at this juncture. Going to need someone besides coach to provide that ownership for accountability on the floor.

good post. I guess Champ, Dunn and Williams, those who could have been expected to take over LJ and Heron's leadership roles, are not quite there yet. And it may be too much to ask that Posh step into that role this soon. I have noticed, however, that Champ seems to be more vocal and asserting himself in huddles during time-outs. They need his leadership desperately.

Champ does seem more vocal in huddles, just can't tell if he's venting out of frustration, or providing guidance and inspiration(leadership). I didn't like his body language yesterday from the onset, but he's a tough read and it was one game. We'll see what happens Sunday.

We miss Heron and Figgy badly . While Heron was injured for much of his 2 years here , he was a quality player . Figgy ‘s loss this year has been even more than anticipated . I don’t know much about the 2 New Commits for next year but , are they going to be able to start right Away ? Are they drop dead 3 point shooters ? We need one or 2 desperately . Maybe Coach A should depart from his preference for Players who might be able to play his style and just get a Transfer or 2 who can shoot . And , the BE today nearly makes it mandatory to have a sturdy 7 footer . Not just the ones who weigh less than 200 pounds . We have had more than a fair share of those players and they can’t compete with the Mamu and other Giants in the league .

It seems to me that the main issue with this team is that their defense is so tied to their offense and their defense has been very sub par so far this season. When you have a team of real good shooters like Nova for example, there defense is not tied to their offense so much. If they have an off night defensively for whatever reason they can just go out and outscore their opponent. With us, we need our defense to be really good because in our system our defense is what generates our offense. We can’t win unless that happens. A team like Creighton, even if they have a bad night defensively, they can shoot their way to a win. We can’t do that. We need that stiff pressure D to be effective to generate our offense and our transition game. So, until these kids commit to playing that type of defense on a high level the situation will not change. Against Creighton it did not look like they were committed to that type of defensive effort. The reason why last years team was playing so well at the end of the season was that their defense had become top notch and it was generating a lot of easy baskets for us and so we didn’t always have to struggle in the half court offense. Our defense was so good at the end of last season it made easy offense for us. We’ll see what happens the rest of the way but if the defense doesn’t improve dramatically our offense will continue to suffer and you will get more games like the last one.
