Slice Sighting

Negotiations have moved to the Vatican. Pope is a huge Kentucky guy, hmm...

Slice's people are in no hurry whatsoever. As far as they are concerned negotiations can take the next 5 years. This was a fck up of major proportions by St. John's, Mullin, Oliva and Gempasaw. Since when does an assistant coach have a better contract than the head coach???????

I don't know what you mean by " a better contract than the head coach " but Slice is certainly in a great position Vis a vie St John's and has us over a barrel.

Thus Oliva is bumped from acting AD role. Management ineptitude in Athletic Department has certainly festered to an unacceptable level. Losing solid people in day to day operations, minimizing importance of a qualified AD, agreeing to contracts seemingly above the norm at financially challenged SJU & not giving loyal folks raises for years. Embarrassing & shameful.

First of all, this is not on Mullin. When he was approached about the job, while Lavin was still the coach, he was told that the school was prepared to go after Slice and Matt so that he would have top notch recruiters. Our president was told the same thing. There were people who were frustrated with Lavin and felt that a change was necessary. They knew that Chris would be someone one al alumni would be on board with, the problem was getting the right assistants, which is where Slice and Matt come in.
The flaw in the equation was Slice. He had success at Pitt because he was connected to the older Caucasian coaches in the city such as Doc Nicelli, Jack Alesi, Bob Oliva, and the coach at All Hallows. This enabled him to get Carl Krauser, Chris Taft, LaVance Fields, Mark McCarroll and Ronald Ramon. Since his first tenure at Pitt, the landscape in basketball in New York City has changed. AAU coaches are calling the shots now and most of them are younger and Black. Slice was unable to connect with them. Forget Isiah Briscoe, that was all Calipari, Nike, and Jimmy Salmon.
Some influential Alumni with little knowledge of the inner working of New York City basketball were responsible for Slice's being hired at such a ridiculous salary.

We gotta figure out how to blame this on that bozo Lavin

Appreciate context Panther, but must note it is my understanding CM advocated strongly for Slice's guarantee laden contract & also, for possibly valid reasons, pushed to have Him move on shortly after last season.

Frankly, I just want to move on, get this well behind us, learn from it & hopefully win some games. :)

Don't mistake some old nut job for an influential alum. Mullin advocated for him and made him his first call upon taking the job. That Matt was coming was a given. Some alum fcktard didn't name him "associate" head coach and Oliva and Gempasaw had no clue. It could have worked great if Slice wanted to actually work but now he is damaged goods and we will and should compensate him because we negotiated the deal. Or maybe that influential alum should pick up up the tab or ask Donald Trump to finance the buy out and we will rename Carnesecca Arena Trump Arena. ;)

Agree with your conclusion and the one thing I have learned over the summer is that the lack of a proven AD at the school has cost us a fortune financially and in terms of the loss of well liked and competent personnel. Just a real shame IMHO.

Surprised Oliva kept any position if he was a big part of the F-up... maybe his terms are better than Slice !!

Agree on your points but honestly I hold Mullin more responsible. He was the GM of a freaking NBA team. He should have known better and the excuse ( not used by you ) that he is a new coach doesn't fly in this case

I can say with virtual 100% certainty you are right on this

I guess we can't expect a 'Slice' bobblehead night at CA. :silly:

School needs to come up with a fundraising gimmick to pay the severance. How about selling bricks outside Carnasecca Arena like the Mets did at Citified or putting up a plaque for donors over a certain amount inside the arena.

Yeah, given our fan base, that'll bring in a few hundred dollars.

The last thing you want is St Johns fans and bricks after some of the bad losses we take in queens

When I had to get rid of an old assistant a while ago the deal I made to get a new one of my choice is I had to pay part of the persons compensation for a certain period of time

Was well worth it

There is a certain irony in that many of the same posters now pointing fingers were dancing in the streets when Rohressen was hired. It didn't work out and ties were properly cut expeditiously unlike the Jarvis and Lavin situations which were allowed to fester long after it was apparent the money paid was not commensurate with the effort given. Throw Roberts into that pot if you wish. The deal given Rohressen is absolutely horrible in hindsight but who on this board or the myriad of basketball "insiders" whose insights are offered regulary on this board thought it was anything but a grand slam when first announced? I certainly don't remember any criticism of the hire from anyone on this board or elsewhere. Mullin, AD, President, etc. certainly share in the blame but at the end of the day, it was a good move that just didn't work. A good analogy may be comparing it to almost any Met free agent signing; great on paper, disastrous in reality and hard to knock except in hindsight. I mean what Met fan today wouldn't have rather spent the Cespedes money on Murphy but no one, including me, a huge Murphy guy, would have said so last off-season.

Unless I'm reading incorrectly I don't think anyone here is saying they were against hiring Slice and pretty much all wanted him

Yes agree we all thought it would be great. Many factors involved that caused the split In hindsight, just have to admit being a great recruiter does not mean that will translate to our program for obvious reasons
