Slice Sighting

Understand Slice will be at The Brooklyn Basketball dinner tomorrow night.

The rest of the staff will be in Queens for The Boomer and Carton basketball benefit.

That's just odd in all honesty.

I do think that things appear to be odd but not quite sure whats odd about this? Its good to have someone representing the program at this dinner.

Let us please stay on topic and discuss the Slice sighting. Below is the complete story with all the details. Donald Trump even discussed it!

Whatever the issue is, they are not talking about it. Only we are.

Give them some time apart. Perhaps we will win a bunch of games next year and produce more harmony. If Slice is still unhappy at this time next year, he can walk.

I never understood the brunette's purpose on that show. Suzzanne Somers had the boobs.
What did the other one bring to the table? A nagging attitude?

Janet's boobs got bigger as the seasons went on. I have the same hope for Mullin's perceived input during timeouts.

In the blonde ratings on Threes Company it would go:
1. Sommers
2. Barnes-Third girl-2nd replacement for Sommers
3.Harrison-2nd girl first Sommers replacement

Right now Mullin's coaching is at a Harrison. Hopefully this year he becomes a Barnes

Suzanne Sommers (Chrissy) over Joyce Dewitt (Janet)

Dawn Wells (Mary Ann) over Tina Louise (Ginger)

Jenilee Harrison (Cindy) over Priscilla Barnes (Terri)

As the Storm Turns, I am taking Bama Fans' attitude.

How the hell can he recruit when he was seen cliff diving lately? If Slice leaves some here will definitely jump off a cliff!

These are grown men the last time I looked; they will work out whatever issues they have or not and whatever the outcome the program will move forward just fine IMO. Differences of opinions and personality clashes are the norm in any group dynamic, however, they are usually not played out in public with so little concrete information as to what is really going on.

In his year at SJU, what can be pointed to as Slice's accomplishments?

Downing two bowls of spaghetti carbonara at Rao's in record time?

Edit: Despite my sarcastic comment, I definitely would have preferred that Slice and Mullin worked things out ... and I think redmannorth's post (two posts down) nicely sums up the situation.

Sat in his assigned seat on the bench during games. Also made recruiting inroads with elite NJ talent in the 2030 class.

In typical redmen.com fashion when we got Slice we got the greatest recruiter on the East Coast. Now that he is leaving he won't be missed as he did nothing for us. Well maybe , just maybe , there is a middle ground. I personally believe we were better off with him as he just didn't loose his recruiting ability over night. However , I also believe we will be fine going forward.
An unfortunate set of circumstances.

True. I'll always remember Barry thumb wrestling the No. 10 pick this past winter. Those were great days, full of promise, awash in hope.

Agree RN. Slice came not only with the rep as one of the great recruiter on the east coast, but one of the best in all of college basketball. In hindsight, maybe everyone overrated him somewhat. In fairness to him, the kind of kids that we were expecting he would bring here, the top 20 talents, were not going to come until we have some success on the court. Had he stayed, I believe we would have seen the fruits of his labor in 2-3 years. But I also believe, like you, that we'll be fine moving forward. Certainly all current indicators point in that direction.

Agree, which is exactly why this staff(especially Matt) should be lauded for the amazing job they have done in such a short period of time and under extremely difficult circumstances.

Matt has had a great relationship with recruits and recruiting is still mostly about building relationships. For 90 percent of D1 schools it is about having a great salesman and a closer. We have both with Matt and Mully.
As far as the Kentucky's and Duke's of the world, it is analogous to recruiting in the world of academia. The brightest students mostly look to attend the public and private Ivies first. Schools like Duke, Harvard, Michigan, Cal, Stanford etc. do not have to do much recruitment as their reputations speak for themselves. Similarly, the elite athletes looking for a career in the NBA wait in anticipation from the blue bloods of college basketball. We fall in the category of the other 90 %. Ergo, we desperately needed a Slice and a Matt.
Whether the loss of Slice is a tempest in a teapot or a Shakespearean Tempest is yet to be seen. Thus far, Matt has been responsible for 90 % of the past and future recruits so the teapot reference may better apply. That Slice may have been playing the role of Antonio in the Tempest is also a possibility. As the Paultzman suggests Keep Calm and let's move onwards and upwards.

I would have giving until next April to see what he does recruiting wise. That's the #1 reason why he was here, I would have giving him another year to do his job.

Great post!

Great post! I think...might need a reference translator

Ha, ha! "Tempest in a teapot" is worrying too much about something that in the end was not such a big deal.
In the Shakespearean Tempest when Sebastian is moved to murder his own brother, it is at the suggestion of the Antonio. Slice may have felt like it was Matt or me. Mully apparently chose not to kill Matt. ;)
