Slice Sighting

In typical redmen.com fashion when we got Slice we got the greatest recruiter on the East Coast. Now that he is leaving he won't be missed as he did nothing for us. Well maybe , just maybe , there is a middle ground. I personally believe we were better off with him as he just didn't loose his recruiting ability over night. However , I also believe we will be fine going forward.
An unfortunate set of circumstances.

also, you do not have to be a recruiting genius to recruit for UK Recruiting for SJU at the present time is a difficult job

Agree, which is exactly why this staff(especially Matt) should be lauded for the amazing job they have done in such a short period of time and under extremely difficult circumstances.

Matt has had a great relationship with recruits and recruiting is still mostly about building relationships. For 90 percent of D1 schools it is about having a great salesman and a closer. We have both with Matt and Mully.
As far as the Kentucky's and Duke's of the world, it is analogous to recruiting in the world of academia. The brightest students mostly look to attend the public and private Ivies first. Schools like Duke, Harvard, Michigan, Cal, Stanford etc. do not have to do much recruitment as their reputations speak for themselves. Similarly, the elite athletes looking for a career in the NBA wait in anticipation from the blue bloods of college basketball. We fall in the category of the other 90 %. Ergo, we desperately needed a Slice and a Matt.
Whether the loss of Slice is a tempest in a teapot or a Shakespearean Tempest is yet to be seen. Thus far, Matt has been responsible for 90 % of the past and future recruits so the teapot reference may better apply. That Slice may have been playing the role of Antonio in the Tempest is also a possibility. As the Paultzman suggests Keep Calm and let's move onwards and upwards.

Great post! I think...might need a reference translator

Ha, ha! "Tempest in a teapot" is worrying too much about something that in the end was not such a big deal.
In the Shakespearean Tempest when Sebastian is moved to murder his own brother, it is at the suggestion of the Antonio. Slice may have felt like it was Matt or me. Mully apparently chose not to kill Matt. ;)

Thanks! post above modified..

Ahh, the bliss of billable hours. :)

I have no idea what caused Slice to leave but you can be sure of one thing. If you put his total compensation on one side of the ledger and his accomplishments on the other Slice will go down as one of the most overpaid personnel in college basketball history.

One could surmise that this contract was not a positive for Oliva getting AD job permanently. Just my sense.

That's what happens when you are wearing two hats! My sense is he does not wear either one well.

I'm in the camp that we were better off with him for down the road but no matter how you look at it whether you were pro slice or against him you are right this will go down as probably the worst assistant hire in history and that's not a reflection just on him but the hire and the contract given etc. The fault on this lies above him with whoever you want to blame it on because if you are stuck with a contract for 5 more freaking years I refuse to believe you can't work it out as a boss

Or told you have to.

ST. John's fictional president (somebody other than president Gempasaw):
"Mr. Mullin, are you fckng kidding me?? You insisted we hire him at any price!"
"Mr. Oliva, as Chief Counsel and Athletic Director, you supported this contract.
There is a huge financial penalty to pay and we will pay it but it will come partially out of your salaries."

Lou Carnesecca: " Chrissy, remember that feather duster quote I passed on to you? It was not meant to be applied to your assistant cosches."

Mitch Richmond: "Chris, I don't want our friendship strained so ask Bobby Gonzalez what he is up to and leave me as your consigliere".

Chris Mullin: "I wish we could be one big happy family again like the old days 8 months ago".

There were posters on this board who wanted this guy badly. It all seemed to make sense to me when CM hired him. Then.... as far as I could tell the guy did absolutely nothing. For guys like me, on the outside, it is hard to figure what went on here. Someone made a terrible decision. As much as I don't want it to be, it appears like yet another misstep for the Program.

As bad as the hiring of Slice worked out the work effort and success of Matt will more than make up for it.

Below is an example of what Slice had to do to "convince" recruits to come to Kentucky. Methinks people (myself included) confused his closing skills with UK's reputation. SJU exposed the reality of the situation.

Isaiah Briscoe Raves About Kentucky In-Home Visit

Kentucky may be one of the newcomers to Isaiah Briscoe’s recruitment, but it’s not taking long for the coaching staff to make an impression.

The Wildcats conducted an in-home visit with Briscoe on Thursday – something the five-star guard described as a dream come true.

“[Calipari], Coach Payne and Slice sitting in my living room is just something that I dreamed of,” he told SNY.tv on Friday.

He did a good job with Pitt, so i don't really hold Calipari against him.

He might be overrated if we are looking at the whole country, but in terms of NY and NJ he had a ton of connections. Infiltrating NJ -- St. Anthony's especially -- would have been great.

I love Matt's hustle and results, so Slice isn't as huge a loss for recruiting as it is for appearance. We look like a second-class organization overpaying for a one-year guy that didn't really bring in any top-flight guys.

May have been like an old lion - Slice and new lion - Matt. On surface looked like great idea to have Slice but maybe not needed now due to us having Matt. Perhaps Slice not used to having to share spotlight. Do think we have bright future with Matt, but still disappointing we are going through this only one year in. I would not factor in what Slice did at UK which I think recruiting there is like finding water in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Payne was the lead recruiter, even when Slice was there.

No doubt Slice has tremendous connections across the country and, in particular, the NYC/NJ area. I don't think losing him will hurt us with St. Anthony's simply because I've read multiple places that Hurley Sr. doesn't really impact where his kids land -- typically the parents, AAU coaches and advisors call the shots for St. Anthony's kids. The key will be whether our staff can maintain a positive rel'ship with the NYC schools/teams and develop those relationships with the Jersey power brokers that we may not have. Thus far, I think the staff has done well with NYC even without Slice. It is clear that the NYC kids and relationships are a priority. Mullin appears to be held in high regard by the NYC HS coaches and AAU programs and Matt A has really good relationships too. As far as Jersey goes, who knows. Everyone says we are making a major play for both Muhammad and Reid, and staying on others from the Garden State, so perhaps we can develop strong relationships there, to the extent the staff doesn't have those already with certain NJ programs.

Negotiations have moved to the Vatican. Pope is a huge Kentucky guy, hmm...

Slice's people are in no hurry whatsoever. As far as they are concerned negotiations can take the next 5 years. This was a fck up of major proportions by St. John's, Mullin, Oliva and Gempasaw. Since when does an assistant coach have a better contract than the head coach???????

How about we drop the negotiations and tell him to go to work?

I don't know what you mean by " a better contract than the head coach " but Slice is certainly in a great position Vis a vie St John's and has us over a barrel.
