SJU Transfer Targets/Possibilities

with Dunn and Cole gone we need someone who can score. We’re losing almost 30 points a game counting Moore

I am not worried about the scoring.  In addition to Champagnie I expect increased point production from Posh, Greg and Wusu.  I also expect Pinzon to replace whatever we got from Cole, and possibly to exceed that.

What we really need is a post player - our defense is a larger part of our scoring than it is for most teams, and we have really been hamstrung by the absence of a legit 5 man.

Would not complain about adding a combo guard, though.

I'm fine with most of these guard prospects. A bunch look intriguing and servicable. Just please don't go into next season with the bigs we currently have and one more "Maybe he'll work out" type big who averaged 6 & 5 in the A10. A proven, reliable big is really the only "must have" in our off season in my mind. I know we're all very aware of how difficult it is to get these type of guys and I'm extremely supportive of this coach and staff but it really has to be a "no excuses" type situation. If we blow the potential of this upcoming season because we're getting dominated by Watson, Wahab and Sanogo every night it'll be criminal. I trust they'll find a solution but it's got to be better than last season's strategy of hoping Roberts improves and Toro can play at a Big East level. We tried that.

Charlie Finley, the owner of the lowly Kansas City A's, was thought to be nuts.  He had a live donkey as the team mascot, proposed glow in the dark baseballs to be better seen at night by players and fans, gave his players wacky nicknames they never had before (Catfish, Blue Moon are examples) and assorted other gimmicks.    He moved the team west to Oakland, stockpiled talent (formerly Kansas City would give away talent to the Yankees) and built a great franchise.

One of his proposals in the face of free agency would have put a lid on gigantic contracts.   His thought was that every year, all players become free agents.   It would flood the market, and keep salaries lower overall.    Just 50 some odd years after Steinbrenner purchased the Yankees for $10 million, an average player makes that in one year, and a great player many times that.   As a business proposition, Finley was onto something.   When that was rejected, he tried mass sell offs of superstar players approaching free agency.   Commissioner Bowie Kuhn blocked him from such a sale to the Yankees.

Not sure what the lesson is here, if there even is one.   But in the end perhaps less restrictions on player movement may be better for everyone.

Having said that, why do I think a shocking transfer away from SJU is on the horizon.   Redman paranoia, I'm sure.

They've been pretty good for years with transfers, but I think if they win it all, combined with free transfer, they will be pulling multiple studs in.
In basketball I believe in the 12-5-1 rule.   Twelve players on a roster.   Only 5 can play at a time.   Only 1 ball.   At times it can make up to 11 players unhappy.

Every kid who goes to a high major program expects to be an impact player.   Most won't, at least immediately.   In an era where no decent player wants to play 4 years, that makes for a lot of movement away from very good teams of very good players.   Why wait your turn that may never come, when another program provides a better opportunity?

A good friend is a PSU grad and huge fan, which leads me to watching them on TV a lot more than any other Big Ten team. Harrar is exactly what SJU needs as he is big, strong, can finish some, rebounds, and can run the court pretty well. He could thrive at SJU. Unfortunately I have seen nothing to suggest there is any mutual interest.

Wheeler, who does seem on SJUs radar, makes a lot of sense too. He is a really good defender, and an aggressive one too. He would thrive in the SJU system of traps and presses. He has improved his three point shooting also, nothing against Rutherford (who I saw him compared to) but he is a much better outside shooter than Nick. And he has been a three year starter at PSU, he is not a star but he is a very solid player.

Vince Cole shot .357 from three last year. Wheeler shot the exact same .357 and I do not consider them remotely comparable defensively. He's an upgrade to the roster.

Agree completely. With the wealth of talent in the transfer portal, now more then ever the staff needs to be able to quickly plug our holes. Every successful program does it, we need to do it. I don't mind waiting for high school kids to develop, and waiting a bit to bring in higher level high school talent, but we've got to be able to bring in experienced kids who can contribute immediately at the positions we most need them. No excuses!

I think the recruiters on staffs that genuinely care about kids and maintain relationships even after a kid goes elsewhere will have a huge leg up in the new version of the transfer game. Our advantage is that beyond Posh and Champ, every other position could stand a major upgrade if one was available.   That being said, there is enormous opportunity to snag an impact player if we don't pull the trigger too soon on lesser talent.

Definitely have reached out to Wheeler

I have faith that a healthy Greg Williams will be better than any realistic 2G transfer.

I'm also optimistic that Pinzon will add significant depth to our guard rotation.

I'm also high on O'Mar Stanley who looks like the frontcourt junkyard dog we need.

But PF/C clearly has to be the focus. And I'm more than willing to get a competent rebounder, defender, put-back man.

I don't think scoring or spacing is going to be our problem next year. I expect double-figure scoring avgs from Julian (18+), Posh, Greg and Marcellus with Wusu being in the high single digits.

It's interior defense and rebounding that needs the biggest upgrade and possibly make us an elite team.

A recent TJ follow fwiw, grad transfer and maybe Rutherford type move;

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4277978/jamari-wheeler

Wouldn't be a bad pick-up at all... Big 10 all defensive team, 3.5 APG, 1.8 SPG, 6.8 PPG, while shooting over 35% from 3.  He could fill the Dunn role as a better shooter and defender.

Of all the names I've seen in this thread, he seems to be the most realistic get.  And that's fine, the staff doesn't need to land a 20 PPG transfer for the team to be good next year.  They have 2 stars in Champ and Posh who can score the ball, just need to build a proper supporting cast around them.

Seems folly

Division II standout Parker Fox targeted by high majors

"Creighton, Cal-Berkley, Clemson, South Carolina, LSU, St. John's, Xavier, Butler, Arkansas, Nebraska, Vanderbilt, Seton Hall, Texas A&M, TCU, Boston College, Georgetown, New Mexico and Dayton are some of the high majors," he said of the high majors who have been in contactFox is a Minnesota native and with their new hire of Ben Johnson, he hopes that the new staff will also join the mix.

Well said, I forgot to mention Greg in my post as well.  Lead the conference in 3 point FG%.  Was in the double digits in scoring at 11 per game before the injury.  Also, before injury he was 4th in SPG in the conference.  He's due for a season where he's 100% healthy.

I wouldn't jump on Wheeler so fast, as there will be a lot of guards available.  We may be a slightly more attractive destination this offseason and should perhaps set our sights higher than a Nick Rutherford (who I loved) type.

I wanna see us aim high this off-season.  It’s time to take the next step forward and add REAL talent to this very solid mix we have.  Time to boost the talent level.

Yes.  There will be ample opportunity now with scholarships open to upgrade.

Yes it is Fordham.  I don’t want to see us grab roster-fillers.  This is the time to grab legit challengers that will push our pencilled-in starters for time and make us better as a team. We want to make a leap forward, we need to make sure that everybody that has left us replaced with somebody better IMO.

D’Lo Texas connection it appears fwiw

SMU
junior guard Darius McNeill has announced he is entering the NCAA transfer portal. McNeill averaged 7.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, and one assist per game during his time in Dallas.

Expect McNeill to host a high major recruitment as St. John's was the first program to reach out.McNeill was ranked the No. 155 overall prospect in the 2017 247Sports Top 247 Player Rankings.

Reading up on McNeill: didn’t play for a year and 8 months When he transferred from cal to SMU. Had a shooting hand injury that limited him early  this year And an ill mother while at SMU. Also his teammate praised his defense Both steals and deflections. Sounds very confident in himself and I like what I read
