SJU Tip-Off Event

Yankees just had one of the worse at bat for the top of the first. Like I said they look at a lot of strikes

Why not? If they are the only ones who can do it they should but I don’t think for a second that will be the case. You guys are seriously “Chicken Littling” it before we have even played a game.

Sorry to be a "Chicken Little" but if LJ &/or Heron have to be our main scorers, offense initiators and the guys who bring the ball up against the press, it will be a very long year for them and the team imho, especially since neither of them have had to be top notch ball handlers to date. But what do I know?

All I am saying is I would give all this wild speculation more credence if you guys at least waited until we have played a game, until you have had a glimpse of the team on the court. Novel idea I know but hey, what do I know?

Fair enough.

It was a very well run event. I really liked the coach T entrance. Cool guy. We have lovely twins on the team this year.
The men will go as far as F&H will take them but Dunn, Roberts and Sears looked Big East ready. Not so much everyone else. Steere needs some fire in his belly. Williams and Caraher need to be better scorers. Earlington needs to play inside the 3 point line. The contributions of the last 3 will be important both for the team and their future at St. John's. The freshman Julian C will be a fan favorite along with Sears, a.k.a. Lover Boy.
BTW, is he really in love?

He's the son of a former SJ soccer player player from Brooklyn. That would be enough but he has length, quickness and a soft touch who can grow tremendously as a 4 year player.

I think he’s actually grown a bit too since arriving from what people have told me

Lots of people, even pundits from what I remember were hating or lukewarm on the Champagnie pick for Big East level of play. I don’t remember who if any was thinking the kid was a sleeper. Will be interesting to see, as a litmus test, as to the staff’s scouting ability.

I’m getting this sneaky feeling our staff is going to prove us wrong on some of these kids but only time will tell. Our next class will tell even more of course.

I didn't even recognize Roberts...he looks like he really put in work in the gym and put on much more mass. Great to see, because he was very very skinny. Good for him, shows his dedication. By his senior year if he keeps working this hard, he may be a beast or at worst a solid Big East starter.

Seems the most likely path to an above-expectations season is two-fold: (1) Dunn emerging as a 3rd legitimate perimeter scoring option after Figgy/Heron, and (2) Steere is a high-major interior presence that almost every other team in the conference seems to consistently have that has largely crippled us.

Positions aside I expect Williams to join those 4 as the most talented/productive 5 we can put on the court at the same time.

Not expecting much consistently from the rest of the roster, but am hopeful that you can mix and match to get a combination of 2-3 of Roberts, Champagne, Caraher, Earlington, Sears, and Rutherford to give you a boost almost every game. It's a deep, athletic group that has some upside and clearly CMA's system should play to getting more out of that type of player than others might. Consistency is often the challenge from your second group and I like the fact that we aren't reliant on 2-3 guys here, could be different game to game.

Obviously in another thin year at the top of the roster health is key.

Seems like a hard-working group that has already developed a high degree of chemistry both together and with the staff which should make for some enjoyable basketball particularly when we aren't overwhelmed talent-wise. At a minimum seems we'll get after it defensively and on the backboards in a way we haven't in quite some time which should be a nice pace change. Looking forward to the season.

Agree SJU1512. Provided Dunn is eligible and Williams is healthy, I expect this to be a fun group to watch even if we struggle from a won/lost perspective in what appears to be a very strong Big East.

I finally watched the Red/White scrimmage (it's still on YouTube for any of those like me who couldn't watch live)

As many have said, you can't really take away much of anything from the game play but just from seeing the guys move around a basketball court for the first time here were my positives:

Steere- Much needed big body. Thank God. I think he's going to actually be what we hoped Sedee Keita would be. Need him to be Big East starter-level and Josh Roberts to be serviceable for us to be competitive against the big teams in conference (which is half the conference)

Dunn- Looks like the type of player who has a knack for putting the ball in the basket. Can get his own shot. We don't really have anyone like that aside from LJ &Heron so having another one of those guys will be very valuable for when the offense isn't flowing.

Champagnie: He didn't do as much in the scrimmage but based off size, athleticism and skill set I agree he's someone to keep an eye on. I wouldn't expect too much early on from a freshman but I agree that we may have gotten a good one under the radar.

The guys looked like they were having fun and seems like they enjoy each other. Good vibes.

He did look much stronger. Let’s see what he can do.

There's a noticeable lack of hair the alum group. So L to R is AG, Phil, Erick, not sure who the half head is, Kyle, and I'm drawing a blank on the last two. Dont' want to do too much work on this so someone fill me in.

I think it’s Ryan Williams and half head might be Reggie Jessie. I love to see them shout out to these guys. Build a bigger SJU family contingent.

I too just watched the tip-off game from this year. Just a few takeaways. Dunn is gonna be our PG. He’s a nice slasher and can pass too. I don’t think he will be a higher perimeter shooter but can make open shots. Unlike some others, I thought Rutherford looked quite good actually. Not sure why everybody is down on hi’. Both he and Dunn are experienced and should hold up fine by committee.

Steere is a beast physically. He’s got real springs for a guy his size and can finish. He, Sears and Roberts should be able to do a solid job inside when we get rolling. All look like they have good hands for the most part. Roberts imo, in the little time watching him seems to have made huge strides. He’s bigger, more natural looking on the court.

I honestly think we will be ok this season and no pushover. Get Greg Williams healthy, play 8-10 guys consistently and push hard on defense and rebounding. I’m somewhat encouraged in limited view of team.

This past Saturday the Basketball program held their annual Mass of Remembrance at St. Thomas More

Quite a few former players, as well as Coach Carnesecca and Coach Kaiser, attended.

The Mass was followed by a reception and an invitation to watch practice

Coach Anderson, his staff and team also attended the Mass.

Coach Anderson also spoke to the group.

In addition, the University is hosting a Basketball Family Day on November 9 for all former players.

Should be a lot of former players at the Central Conn. game.

Isn't that Tarik Owens at the end?
