SJU Tip-Off Event

We need Dunn cleared to have a shot this season. If that happens and we get lucky health wise I think we have enough to find a solid 8 man rotation.
Sorry guys, in bed without my glasses but usually can’t find them . After my cataracts done reading close is a pain
Good luck--I had right eye done on 10/4 and other today--Chose the dates so I would be ready for opening night. Change in the 10/4 eye is amazing.

If guys like Earlington and Roberts can give us something up front this season, it would be big for us. Hoping that happens.

I agree with Dunn getting cleared they really need him, from everything I've been reading though sounds like most are confident he will be. I think they really need Steere as well. I seen a couple kids that did what Steere did and transferred at semester that have gotten waivers at other schools, hoping he gets one too. If both get cleared I think they have enough for a solid 9-10 man rotation. I know the scrimmage was just a pick-up game with no defense, but I got a few takeaways...

-Dunn will probably start at PG if cleared, he's athletic, quick, defensive minded. I think he'll thrive in CMA's system. He just looks like a better play overall that Rutherford.

-Champaigne is going to surprise some people, he's a legit 6'7, nice frame, athletic, and he can handle the ball.

-Caraher, although he missed most of his shots, the thing that stuck out to me is he retooled his body from the footage I seen on him at HB, he looked slim out there. I was saying in earlier post from looking at his body he'd play the 4 spot if he made the rotation, I'm back tracking on that, I think he'll be able to play the 3 now.

I could see a rotation looking something like this, if both Dunn and Steere are cleared.

1. Dunn/Rutherford
2. Heron/Williams
3. LJ/Caraher
4. Sears/Champagnie/Earlington
5. Steere/Roberts

That is exactly the rotation we will have and once cleared Dunn will start over Rutherford, he is the much better player. We will have to play 2 players at each position as pressure D is physically demanding and everyone will need to sub out for a little. With respect to the 4 position no one of the 3 is particularly strong and all 3 will rotate in and out. All 11 players will play regularly.

Takeaways from the scrimmage:

Still Awesome
LJ
Heron

I Need to See More

Between watching the Yankee Game, the Tip-Off Event, and working, I thought Dunn, Sears, Roberts and Earlington looked good, lol.
Roberts seems very athletic and mobile with some scoring that surprised me (I know it's a scrimmage).
Mustapha and LJ looked great; Caraher shot a few clankers, and I think Champagnie may be a pleasant surprise this year. Steere looked good but seemed a bit beefy and slower.
All that said, not much can be gleaned from today imo.
CMA will keep in shape running the sidelines, lol, and did enjoy seeing all our players compete.

Nothing can be gained from this”scrimmage”. Absolutely nothing at al. It was fun, but those guys are about to really to get to work. The season is upon us guys.

Hey Chicago thanks for your observations. I take your comment that “Steere looked good but seemed a bit beefy and slower” as a positive. After watching SJU get pushed around for years in the post beefy and slower ain’t a bad thing.

Of course, maybe I’m ok with it because perhaps it pretty well describes my life something like “older, beefy and slower” would be accurate”. :cheer:

I don't see Williams cited as a participant in the scrimmage. If so, it's no doubt because his back is still giving him problems (MCA briefly referred to it at Media Day). It's something that seems to have's been going on for a good while, and something I'm definitely concerned about -- I was expecting him to be a critical part of the rotation.

Effort to recognize former players better than past will pay dividends imo.

Granted I was multi-tasking, but I looked for GW but did not locate him during the scrimmage. I saw him on the court after it was over.
Here's hoping the kid gets healthy.

Watched the scrimmage with one eye on my laptop while I watched the Yankee game. The only thing I took away from the scrimmage is that the kids all looked to be enjoying themselves immensely, always a good thing to see.

Here are my only 2 take-aways from the scrimmage: Dunn looks like a player, and O’Connell clearly has some sick dance moves. Especially for an Irish kid from Mineola.

Yes, agree on Dunn. Kid looked great. Now for High-Major hoops, lol. Still think Rasheem will be a nice surprise and have a good season.

I started to not even watch the scrimmage, as I don't get anything from it. But I had some time to burn earlier today, so I decided to watch it. Let's say I didn't learn one thing by watching it.

In eleven days, we'll have a game where we'll be able to better gauge the personnel.

O'Connell is half Irish and half Puerto Rican. Guess his Mom taught him some Salsa moves. Both of his parents are St. Johns grads.
