Here are my only 2 take-aways from the scrimmage: Dunn looks like a player, and O’Connell clearly has some sick dance moves. Especially for an Irish kid from Mineola.
O'Connell is half Irish and half Puerto Rican. Guess his Mom taught him some Salsa moves. Both of his parents are St. Johns grads.
And even more importantly, he's a Chaminade grad!

Do walk-ons count for the APR score? If not, we should give him the final scholarship since we aren't using it, and let him give our scores a boost.

There are only so much you can take away from a scrimmage, but.....

Dunn is quick and appears to have a nice handle, both of which were nice to see.
Whether he can utilize those more effectively than he did at St. Francis is the big question.

Based on his athleticism alone, Roberts should be a plus defender in a pressing system.

Steere is a man among boys. His arms look thicker than some guys' legs. His hands looked good too.

Sears ran and jumped well. Didn't notice any lingering injury.

Earlington looked fine. Don't know why folks are down on him due to last night.

Who knows with a wide-open scrimmage like that, with LJ attempting 2 backhanded slams and others with some reckless ally-oop tries, lol, but good observations MM.

Dunn and Steere are two huge pieces. Dunn has experience, strength and grit. He may be a lot better at the PG spot dishing and driving than at SG like he was. If Dunn can play the PG well, our 2 and 3 are top notch. Steere has the athleticism and size to be a force inside. Could end up with a really solid 6-8 guys and challenge a bit. Still anxious to hear about Dunn and Steere. Could change things in a big way.

The scrimmage was about two things--having some fun for the players and entertaining the students so hopefully they will come out to games this season.
Best Thing--No One Got Hurt.
Second best was the new "Mancer" doing an incredible split at the end on one of the routines. Dance Squad looks like they are ready for the season.
Also great to see Women's Coach Joe dancing and singing--he has quite an impressive team with his additions; they will be worth venturing to CA to see a few of their games.

Sorry about your prob reading after the operation. I had the reverse effect as now I can read without glasses. I need glasses for distance, driving and seeing SJU Basketball. I have a temp perscription and my eyeglass guy has "cheap" lens on hand and redid them with the new. lesser strength perscription and I can't believe what I have been missing--Good Luck!

If Dunn doesn't get cleared, we are in a world of hurt, particularly if this season's Mysteriously Injured Player Du Jour Williams can't get on the court soon. We'd be left with Rutherford and Heron at guard. That would be kind of a problem.

People keep thinking traditional positions. Regardless of whether Dunn is eligible or Williams is restricted I still think a fair amount of our offense will be initiated by and/or run through Figueroa.

His bro is a pretty good basketball player there now. Think he may also play lacrosse and football. Have to ask my nephew if he knows them. He graduated Chaminade last year. Played goalie on hockey team. He's a freshman at SJU and actually dorms with a lot of the baseball players.

That may be true, but we are in a league with extraordinarily good guard play this year. Who would defend in this scenario exactly?

Fig and Heron - Our stars
Dunn, Williams and Steere - the guys we need to be competitive
Sears, Champaigne, Roberts, Earlington, Rutherford and Caraher - need to play their roles well.

Not a lot of margin for error

Dunn, Williams, Rutherford.

See Mase reply. I never said Figueroa would play or defend guards; I said he would initiate offense. Look up Paul Pressey, who happens to be on our staff.

I think we will have good defenders at guard and wing. While LJ may well play the role of a point forward, we will need guys who are comfortable bringing the ball up against the pressure that we will undoubtedly face. That should not be LJ or Mustapha imho.

We were assuming no waiver for Dunn and lingering injury for Williams for purposes of this discussion. Obviously if one or both are available i'm less concerned.

Why not? If they are the only ones who can do it they should but I don’t think for a second that will be the case. You guys are seriously “Chicken Littling” it before we have even played a game.

Why aren't people concerned about Williams? He hasn't practiced yet and seems to have some sort of mysterious lingering back issue. Also, it's us.

You were assuming that, I wasn’t. Everything is pointing to Dunn being eligible and I have not heard from anyone that Williams sitting out was anything but precautionary. I know you have alluded to a recurring and lingering back problem and you may very well be correct but I haven’t heard it anywhere else.
