The fringe NBA kids should go for the $.
It is not like Robinson Cano taking a few more millions to play in Seattle instead of NY.
You are playing for a year, might as well get paid.
Glad you’re not advising these kids. Couldn’t disagree more. The “fringe” NBA kids, more than anybody else, are in need of a good coach/situation to give them the best chance at the league.

Better to lose out on a couple of hundred thousand dollars during one year of college if it gives them the best chance to make millions in the league (as opposed to being a journeyman in Europe with uncertain pay).

Of course this only applies to kids with a real opportunity to make the league, not someone who has no chance regardless of the coach or situation.

I think all 79 was saying was that it’s not all about money for some of the kids being recruited. Some are also taking fit and situation into account. Meaning, if we lose out on a kid, I think 79 is saying not to automatically assume it’s cause our NIL offer wasn’t there. Maybe the fit just wasn’t right
I think it actually comes down to two things: Role (fit) described by recruiting coaches and Money.....the most important factor.
In 90% of the cases you will find that the players take the highest outlandish offer.
10% may take a lesser amount because they are promised a starting position.
When the $ difference is in the six figure range, I think most players (and their agents ) will go for the $$ if they have confidence in their game.

For example: Cam Spencer

I couldn’t disagree more, who discerns “real opportunity”? The bird in the hand is a much more sensible play because if you are good enough to make the league you will make it. Just my opinion of course, but coaches getting marginal, borderline players into the league is so overblown as to be comical. Take the money colleges are throwing around in the overwhelmingly majority of the cases.

Zach told me just now visit is not tomorrow & not sure of exact date yet. Hopefully it is this week.
Ugh, that doesn’t sound good particularly with news of him being a strong Michigan lean

We’ll have to agree to disagree. I don’t believe that for every kid, the adage that if you’re good enough to make the league you’ll make it applies.

It certainly applies for the uber talented kids with tons of raw talent. But for borderline kids, coaching, development and being put in the right spot to showcase your skills matters a great deal.

But if it’s your kid and he’s borderline which more times than not mean he’s not close and he’s getting offered let’s say 1 million for 1 year that’s pretty hard not to turn down. If the difference between let’s say another school and us is 100k I’d like to think it’s us but I can’t blame any kid in this day and age for going for the money 💰 IF that is the kids primary motivation

Plus that whole argument about Pitino developing pros was more relevant when kids were staying in same spot for 4 years.
As great as he is for one year can’t blame kid for going for extra dough.

I just think there's a difference between "blaming" kid for taking more money vs. not even comprehending why anyone wouldn't make a decision purely based on money.

I don’t blame the kids either way. It’s an extremely difficult decision and there is undoubtedly a subjective element. I also agree that the wider the discrepancy between competing offers, the more difficult it is to turn down the money. That said, if a kid has a legitimate chance to make the league, I do think coaching, exposure and role are very important factors.

No, it doesn’t, we just disagree. On top of it not working, Watkins is going into his junior or senior year I believe, those are even rarer to get drafted in this day and age.

It’s the summer chill
Y2 jumped gun on the visit date & I ran w that, so it is not like it was cancelled. Am told we will certainly get a visit, but my impression is SJ has ground to make up w Michigan. We’ll see.
can we stop pretending like that guy has any better intel than others? wrong about Mgbako, wrong about Norchad, now wrong about visit tomorrow. I mean come on...
