SJU Power Forward Portal Targets

If the lure of coach Pitino could not bring in the likes of Omier, Pryor, Cliff O and now perhaps Watkins, it would seem that we are not competitive on the financial end of things as 4s and 5s seem the most coveted positions.
Good point. Unfortunately it’s not about the coach anymore.

The reality, and tough pill to swallow, may just be that Pitino or no Pitino, big money, Big Conferences, State Schools with large endowments (which is the reason UConn has a serious advantage in the Big East) will win all the time. Johnnies have lost players to Kentucky, Louisville and now perhaps Michigan, all with first year coaches and none with Coach Pitino’s acumen.

Smith and Kadary were two of the best players in the portal this year.

Yes they were but the most coveted were the 4s and 5s of which our staff to date has struggled.

We have arguably the best portal class in the country and are not done. Staff is obviously competing for talent at the highest level, often times successfully. Lamenting the prospect of only bringing in a 7’1 former top 50 C + one of Watkins/Brazile or a top euro big is bizarre. What more could be expected here?

What's mind boggling is we have basically sucked for the last 25 years.
Sure. But we have unequivocally one of the best transfer classes in all of the country, plus a very good HS recruiting one, for this year. Why are we talking about stuff like we can't fundamentally compete for recruits in this day and age? We lost out premium guys, going after other ones, and it's well known that we have money to spend.

There will always be whiners no matter what.

I'll stay away from the NIL offers for the time being...Coach is a large reason the transfer class is so solid and the primary reason Jamir is even this far down the road with SJ and to question that is silly. As i mentioned previously if the offers are close enough it's how he will be used..and Rick, as always tells the truth and not just what the kid wants to hear. So much respect for that.

Does this mean we still have a good chance or is dusty May win out.

Don’t disagree with anything you said my post was just a reaction to questioning the need for a PF or stretch 4 or whatever you want to call it. Rick was the one who said we needed one and really don’t see one on roster I know sure you can put some guys we have there. Also a reaction from being disappointed that apparently we lost out on Watkins after Omier Pryor Mitchell misses after many on here were basically pencilling them in or should I say penning them in.

Just imagine a SJU program with say Speedy Claxton as the coach. No disrespect to Speedy but that is why people need to understand NIL or not SJU's biggest asset is their current HC.

People REALLY need to understand that.

I guess you missed my point. I never threw shade on Pitino. In fact, just the opposite. My point is that no matter how you soft soap it, if one program offers thousands more then another, that’s where the kid and his handlers are going, especially for border line NBA talents who see this as an opportunity for financial gain if the NBA opportunity does not happen. Right now and even more so in years to come, unless there is some sort of regulation with regards to NIL the offers will get crazier and the Big Conference, State schools will buy the best teams. For many schools, the money only goes so far, for others, it’s a bottomless pit. St. John’s faired decently with NIL this year but the real question is can they sustain that?
