SJU Portal Targets

Used to think talent evaluators like Jerry West or Donnie Walsh were hard to come by, but if you read this board we’ve got em by the dozen!

Everyone has an opinion of who they rate or who is absolute shite, maybe we just let this play out a little and let the staff piece the puzzle together?
Never said I was a talent evaluator. I just don't like his game and don't want him here. If he comes I'll root for him like crazy, I just think there will be better options

Not saying it is wrong, but I am not comfortable with this either. I respect the Big East and the coaches in our league. To take players from a league school because you have more money just doesn't feel right. If Danny Hurley and UCONN came after Wilcher because they are losing Newton, Spencer, and Castle, y'all would be singing an entirely different tune. Tell me I.m wrong!!!

I get it but it has already occurred including 2 SJU players going to 2 other BE schools.

At this point it so commonplace in every conference it is not even an event anymore.

All I can do is speak for myself at this point having Sim Wilcher go to UCONN as opposed to say Ohio St or Illinois makes little difference. It is what is. If we are going to say it is about the kids and it is their life then why restrict them just because a school plays in same conference? If player X really wants to go to UCONN what point is it to make them unhappy and restrict them?

As a non-insider, I’m trying to sift through all this. Please add or correct me if I am wrong:

Cliff O - pretty good chance we land him next week

Bensley and DJ - Mutual interest. Good shot we land 1.

Kadary - We will be interested if he hits the portal, which is likely. Polarizing player.

Dubar - There is interest. No developments.

Clayton - No indication he is in play.

Ledlum - Appealing for another year.

Luis - Should be back.

Taylor - Not so much.

Traore - A very well-liked student athlete.

Others - The staff is being patient, so should we.

Malik Boothe - There is a consensus that he was the best shot blocker in St. John’s history.

Brothers - No hotter debate since Cane and Able.

Guards v Forwards - We really need to nail this definition down so the players know where they will be playing next year.

Marillac - Leading a petition to get Jenkins another year of eligibility.

But seriously appreciate those in the know sharing.

Dubar ship has sailed.

This is the correct answer, the guy is an outstanding player and you have to figure that even though the fit seems odd, if Pitino wants him then he has a plan for how he wants to use him. Pitino certainly got enough experience last year trying to hammer square pegs into round holes that you would assume he isn't planning to try that again.
Trusting the process, what an interesting concept 😎

Those were two players who our coach did not want, Response would be different if it were Simeon or RJ to UCONN.

I think it's up to the players to decide if they want to stay in a program. If they put themselves in the portal then all is fine.
However, I think we should all agree that it is unethical for coaches to "recruit" players from other schools, regardless of conference, before that player has publicly declared his interest via the transfer portal.
While these types of things happened long before the portal, it is clearly a case of tampering if recruiting other teams players behind the back of other coaches. Worse still if they are fellow coaches in the same conference.

Not sure but seem to remember before transferring to SH that Kadary's first choice was SJU but CMA only had one scholarship available which he was holding for a recruit (forgot his name) who eventually went to G'Town and is no longer there.

Brooklyn kid probably would embrace playing under the "bright lights" at MSG.

Yes. Thanks.

No it was not Jordan Riley as Richmond is a class year ahead of Riley and Pinzon (who we took after Riley spurned us).

Unfortunately tampering is rampant if you don't engage you get left behind and getting left behind eventually leads to losing your job.

Actually, that would track as SJU CC is talking about when he transferred from SU, one year after beginning college. But no idea what actually went on behind the scenes at the time. I do know, the SU people think SH tampered with him and that he was pretty much a one school transfer at that time.

I get it but that is the point.

If he wants to transfer what difference does it make if the coach wants him or not?

I mean if player X wants to transfer and the school he prefers is in conference what difference does it make it if that coach prefers to keep him or not, he wants to keave?

I remember the tampering accusation from SU about SH with Taurean Thompson. Did it occur with KR as well?

You can’t have it both ways. Most here agreed/wanted player pay and increased movement. Well, that is what we have. Pandora is out of the box and she ain’t crawling back in it. This is a bastardized version of “professional” sports. I don’t love it but it is what it is. We all have the right to take it or leave it. I can see both sides but…
