Luis is the perfect case study on the state of college basketball. Umass to St. John’s. Playing for one of the greatest coaches in the sport, had an injury plagued year but showed potential and now just looking to cash in somewhere.

The game is broken. You can’t win by replacing 7-8 guys every year. It doesn’t work and will ultimately drive Rick out sooner rather than later.
Rick has NYC, MSG, a blindly supportive AD, and a blank check for NIL. If he can't make it work it's on him.

Yea, I think it’s worth overpaying for that same reason. And he was starting to look much better at the end of the year. He was hitting the boards really hard and clearly taking more pride in his D

Right because he was auditioning for his next gig. Where was that energy all year? Shin splints? Not practicing? You aren’t going to get better by not practicing.

It’s like a player in a contract year.

I’m talking with zero inside info. If it’s a level of overpay that is absolutely egregious, you have to let him walk. But if it’s “more than you’d want to give” but in the ballpark, I’d keep him
You sound like a man who has had to make some hiring decisions. If you have a good employee retention is almost always cheaper than new hire/training. I'm not advocating keeping or letting RJ go, just admiring your business savvy.

He can fill out a talented roster surely. But those guys have to gel. We saw that this year it takes a bit. Took Dingle until late Feb to get going. When you have only a handful of returns every year and no real core to build with…you lose early season games which as we saw this week can put you right back on the bubble.

Just venting. It’s not sustainable.

RJ Luis stunk for most of the season, had a nice but short little stretch at the end when he decided to pass the ball, then reverted back to sucking in our biggest game of the year vs uconn.

we can do much better.

I agree, the teams that do the best retain their core players. BUT if Danny Hurley can do it with his outlandish behavior, CRP has to learn how to do it too.

I thought he was gone months ago — no idea why, just a feeling. I think he and his handlers see him in the draft no later than next year. He’s risky anyway. The shin splints are chronic. He seems injury prone. But should we welcome him back? Absolutely. But don’t overpay.

Excellent post. Everyone here seems to think that Rick is going recruiting on his white horse will bring in a bunch of studs and a dancing we will go. This past year we had a substantially talented roster. Mid majors or not, there was significant talent on this team led by Danis. Yet how long did it take the team to jell? Well after yesterday that now seems to be way too long. If Rick brings in 7-9 new players each year, with his system, how can we expect better results?

I guess if coach uses the line….” this team won’t be playing well till February”….you can leave your dancing shoes in the closet.

I think he views him as a wing that can switch on anyone and be fine. He played the 4 against us a lot. It was crazy how often Ledlum would get switched on to a guard and we’d have two disadvantages.

You can pair him up with another big wing like Luis, Dunlap, Taylor, or whoever is here after Portal Kombat ends.

Cliff and Dubar would be significant defensive upgrades to Soriano and Ledlum/soph version of Luis.
Dubar sounds like he is a college version of the Knicks’ OG. If he does the similar by spreading the floor due to the ability to hit outside shots, along with using his length to be a lockdown perimeter defender, then I am all in.

No pressure kid.😁

Gonna say it until hell freezes over, Hurley is a good guy in “real life”, way over the top at times when coaching. I guarantee you his players like and respect him.
And for the record, Pitino is starting his 2nd season, there is absolutely no track record of him not being able to keep his players. IMO, he needs to keep Wilcher, Eijofor and Dunlap and he will. Luis and Taylor in my mind are very much variables, they both were given real opportunities and neither showed any consistency you could count and build on. I agree Luis is an enigma but too many red flags in my mind to invest big NIL $ in him.

Honestly that’s pretty good

Two things:
1) I thought you were only allowed to transfer once
2) If Luis is leaving for the money, don’t let the door hit you on the way out

l’m sure he’s getting NIL here. But what Pitino offers is worth the difference he’ll get elsewhere. Especially the exposure.
I used to believe this but we had players this year who regressed. And their pro aspirations took a hit. Dingle. Soriano. Ledlum.

Please help me out; has it been announced that RJ Luis is transferring, or is it speculation ?
