SJU Portal Targets

I was antsy and impatient early. I've said as much. I've been pretty calm the last couple weeks and very supportive of efforts to land Kadary/Omer/Smith.
Not sure why Smith lumped in with other two?
Get Kadary and Omer should have an NCAA tournament team. Not nearly as high on Smith
Need a guy that can knock down threes though. Someone who has actually knocked down threes in college.

Also would be worried about how Luis and Kadary mesh.

Arkansas makes no sense for Smith. With Boogie and the addition of Davis, this sounds like just using the name for raising stock. Louisville brought in 5 guards this portal season already, so that sort of feels the same as Arkansas fit wise, doesn't really mesh. He's not going somewhere to come off the bench in year 5.

Washington having coaching familiarity - they added DJ Davis to play the 2 and have stud guard Zoom Diallo coming in, as well as Mekhi Mason from Rice, that would make for a really nice four.

I think more teams will be involved here, my guess
Interesting that you think Smith would come off the bench at Arkansas. I was already loving our recruiting but this class could put me in Hog heaven. Thanks for the endorsement. ;)

In the words of Mark Twain: there are lies, damn lies and statistics. Coach doesn’t waste his time. He will give him a workout. Brian Cashman relies on statistics. No championships in a long time.
I am not an advanced stats guy at the college level. But these are basic stats😂 Every 100 shots he took he made 38-39. Not great, Bob.

I do think advanced stats are far more valuable in a sport like baseball, though, where the outside variables are minimal.

He’s worth a workout for sure and let’s see what he does.

I’ve seen Melvin Council play. He is a very good shooter with excellent size. Wagner was only 7 deep due to injuries, yet still won their conference and went to the NCAA tournament. He can play.
Plus one of Wagner’s assistants is our own Malik Boothe. I’m sure Coach Boothe vouched for him. Trust Coach.

Unfortunately seems like Boothe was his shooting coach

I'm going to say perhaps a hot take. But if Pitino ends up with the two top targets he's expecting, and he has a nice freshman class coming in, I can see him loving the portal next year if we maintain the NIL to keep the continuity he wants with the underclassmen this year.

If he can reliably keep the guys he wants to keep, shed the guys he wants to shed, and upgrade the roster the way he wants, this format can easily reinvigorate him. We just have to have the NIL to do it.

Best shot in basketball is a set three off a pass from inside. That’s why you bring Smith in. He makes the shooters better.

He’ll make some wild mistakes that you will not like.

You don’t need more shooters if you bring in Smith IMO.

Well, with Repole banking the SJU NIL fund, you guys should be swimming in money. Shouldn't be any problems competing with the Duke, Kansas, UNC, and Kentucky's of the world.

Literally Repole + smart NIL management (e.g. Storm Marketing going to 501c3 with the non-profit thing) will be more of a key to Pitino staying than almost anything else.

Maybe the landscape causes Pitino an extra headache or two, but the guy wants to win and wants a roster with studs. You can argue pre-NIL/transfers at STJ, he'd have more headache for not being able to get the guys he wants.

Considering his age, it is highly unlikely that Pitino goes anywhere else. Especially if he can get the Johnnies into the NCAA tourney a couple of times in the next few years.

I think if Pitino really wants him and the NIL is there we can get him. As you said Arkansas and Louisville don't make sense to me on paper. Did I read correctly (might've been 79 who posted it a while back) that Smith's mother is from Brooklyn?
I think Zach mentioned Smith's mom lives in Brooklyn also.
