SJU Portal Targets

Biggest "issue" here is the potential enormous talent jump in level of competition. He was in that "Jordan Dingle at UPenn" role for Jackson State, did all the heavy lifting scoring wise. Johnnies have a big need in scoring right now and at 2 guard...we'll see.

But we've seen a lot of teams have success with adding guys like this...(Xavier) sure SWAC is a horrific league (I believe literally dead last conference), but he's a kid who seemingly doesn't lack confidence and I'll take 39% from three on over 5 attempts a game from anyone in the world.
Seems like a very risky get to me if we’re targeting this guy to be an alpha 2 guard.

I also think many on here are minimizing the gaping hold we need to fill with Soriano being gone, warts and all.

Yes we need to fill scoring and am not going to kill the staff for taking a conference POY who scores and shoots at a high rate.

But Dingle was able to make 53% of his 2 point shots at Penn. I’m just pointing out that 39% from 2 is HARD to do. Especially for a good player.

Btw Conway was 38% on 5.7 attempts from 3 before coming here.
Evans seems like the better athlete than both, but I agree. Dingle also put up big stats against high majors the year before.

That’s what makes it even more confusing to me. How is a bigger, maybe better athlete, shooting so poor inside the arc? That bad of shot selection?

Sure staff has more feelers out there on potential 2-guards. Evans is just the first name we’ve heard.

Yeah. It's notable he's taking a visit though. 247 has him and Bensley Joseph ranked the same -- not that this really determines anything. But I'd be curious to know how much the staff wants him afterwards.

Can't say I've watched much Jackson State the past couple years but to me the numbers indicated this Evans dude is a big yikes. Not super efficient in maybe the worst league in D1 making only 41% of his 2s on very high volume. This past season was the first year he actually made over 40% of his 2s and the quality of perimeter defenders and rim protectors he'll see in the Big East will be on another planet than the SWAC.

Does seem like a decent enough catch and shoot guy but think we need more than that given his lack of everything else. His numbers against quality competition this past season are decent (not good, not bad) mostly driven by a 10-14 from 3 stretch against Gonzaga and Northwestern which is nice to see he can make 3s against those teams but that % is clearly unsustainable and still don't pull his efficiency numbers up to good territory. In those 2 games he went 6-23 from 2. Prior to this past season he was absolutely horrendous against good competition.

Defensively he was bad even in the SWAC. Again, Pitino isn't going to fix that in just one offseason.

Maybe his efficiency numbers would improve without having to be "the guy" on a team and having his volume scaled back a bit. But I just don't see it here. I refuse to believe the staff passed on Bensley Joseph just to land a guy like this.

Evans dropped 25 on Gonzaga, 23 Northwestern, 20 Georgetown and Missouri, 18 Memphis, 33 LMU. 6th year in college, the veteran scorer that we sorely need. Could be another upgrade for us on the perimeter, Scott > Taylor; Evans > Dingle
Took him 4 years in college to average double figures in a terrible league and his FG % is troubling.

Quincy Robert’s averaged 1.0 ppg as a junior at St. John’s and then 23.9 ppg as a senior at Grambling (same conference as Jackson State) the very next year.

The gap in competition is huge. Penn is closer to Duke than Jackson State.

Always respect Mug’s objectivity and knowledge & agree big reach here

Am I wrong thinking Wilcher is starting at the 2 guard based on what Pitino said 2nd half of last season?

I’d guess guardwise PG is priority followed by some type of bench scoring

Am I wrong?

Impossible to say really until the roster fills out

No, they need a veteran PG and Sim will get work on and off ball as well

I don't think we need to jump to the assumption that SJU is gonna make this kid their primary 2 guard. Fan base hasn't had much to talk about last few days (sans a bunch of people losing their minds and wanting to jump off the Throgsneck Bridge) so at least there is a player to talk about.

I'm not gonna tell people to be patience or let things play out as that is pointless with our fans. Whatever will happen will happen and for me I'll evaluate the entire roster in approx 6-8 weeks when there should be a clear picture.

Hopefully the visit is more of the staff doing due diligence on the kid and wanting to see him up close, instead of being a heavy target.

That may be true for you but , not the Player . Just saying .
People aren’t flocking to NY to pay more Taxes . People are moving to Texas to pay less taxes .

Of course , they’re more are pros/ Cons to living in NY or Texas but , Taxes are clearly are clearly on the Con column for NY .

Texas has no income taxes . NY does , as you no doubt know well .

Of course ,,Texas does have Sales Tax , Property Tax , etc as does NY . NY is much higher .

The player has one more thing to consider in this debate. What is his earning potential after school if he's really not an NBA caliber player (and lots of these big money portal guys are not). If you are going to make that amount or more yearly for an extended period, as many of us assume about our salaries as we climb the ladder in the workforce, then the difference may be negligible but if you have one or two years to build your nest egg before seeing your market value drop substantially then the obvious choice is maximize your assets in the short term. This goes for chasing the bag as well as considering the net proceeds. I like to think I would have never considered living in Texas, but then again I was never offered 5-10x my long term annual value or more to do so, so I guess as the old saying goes never say never.
