SJU Portal Targets

Never had a shot apparently. Would be nice to get at least one big-time player this portal season, but maybe that’s asking for too much.

That's a gut punch. I mean those are all literally blue blood schools. Paultz has been hinting at Brea's lack of interest. We can't sit here and say STJ passed or never targeted him. We absolutely targeted him, we just got denied.

You'd still expect to get an in with ample amounts of playing time, Felipe connection, and most of all, Rick Pitino. But I get it. Hard to blame him.

Brutal.

Scott would be a nice get. Vince is a low risk/high reward type of player who if he’s finally healthy can develop into something. But fact of the matter is it’s now April 22nd and we’re not close to landing a true difference maker for next season. Portal closes next week. Frustrating.

We can definitively say we struck out on two main targets: Cliff and Brea. That's not good, no sugar coating there. But at least we have a competent staff + all-time great coach who will have plans b-z.

Definitely frustrating. Dave is right. Can't judge where we're at until 6-8 weeks. Scott and Vince would be a morale boost that our fan base needs.

I’ve had similar thoughts lately. I have no clue what Matt A actually does and if he’s doing a good job or not. All I can go on is results. I think it’s fair to question what he’s bringing to the table, but again I know very little of what goes on behind the scenes.
Everything goes through Rick . Matt a I believe is helping Rick with NIL but to say Matt has any power is funny

I don’t really know what his job is, how he is being evaluated, etc. But I could imagine it’s a pretty big job. In concert with coaches, in the off NIL season, he’s got to be working with the collectives in fundraising - - steering them to donors, helping with specific programs etc. I think he’s probably working with coaches in scouting, coming up with potentials, etc. and taking every agents calls. Then during NIL season, he acts as the University’s agent in negotiating contracts.

Listen to that podcast that SJUDave posted. It was quite good and talks a bit about how it all works. The agent interviewed said the colleges that have a GM are smart and are much easier to deal with.

Didn’t say he has any power and said in my post I have no clue what he actually does. Also said I don’t know what goes on behind the scenes.

But as with other successful programs like Duke, Tennessee North Carolina etc. as kids have successful seasons they will look to parlay it into a money making opportunity and bolt at the end of the season. It didn’t happen to the Johnnies this year cause there were not any holdovers except for one, that other teams were willing to bid for. But I would bet that if we have a successful season next season, and whoever the stars are, be it Wilcher, Dunlap etc. those kids will be testing the portal market.
And that’s where the parents come in. And retention money.

Don't think this is about money at all.

This is what they have in common:

College basketball teams with the most national championships

  • UCLA — 11
  • Kentucky — 8
  • UConn — 6
  • North Carolina — 6
  • Duke — 5
  • Indiana — 5
  • Kansas — 4
I hate to be skeptical but they didn’t get to where they are by giving recruits subway tokens. 🤪
