SJU Portal Targets

No brainer from his perspective. You can't look at that list and think our staff did anything wrong. Just hurts.
I wouldn’t be that upset about Brea. So he’s a good outside shooter and in the A10 perhaps he was but how do we know how he woukd do against better competition. For instance, against Houston Brea had 2 points in 27 minutes of play. Even against the Johnnies, who we can all agree was not that good at the time coming off a beating from Michigan, he had 10 points which for a “big time” three point shooter should have had more.

I’m not saying he’s not a decent player but not a “big time” player by any means and his loss means little. Of course now anyone in the portal may seem like a great get cause with a week to go and no one signed as of yet, everyone is a bit anxious.

But who knows, he may be a good off the bench role player for one of those teams.

Teams that play portal well like Creighton and Xavier don’t hunt “big time players” exclusively, rather recruit talented players who fit their roster need. Competent pursuits w high yield v wasted time and effort going for glitz & rankings.

If this was about money, we'd see Arkansas, Indiana, Villanova and a couple other different schools.
Umm...Duke, UConn, UNC, Kansas, Kentucky have more money than god. This is equally about money as it is winning programs. Clearly the Felipe Lopez thing mattered little, as did the being close to home.

We're learning this year a lot of these narratives being shared early on hold little to no weight when it comes down to it.

They're all up there with having a top NIL budget. They're also all, with the exception of Kentucky, likely going to be top 6-8 preseason ranked.

My only point is that there are other less winning programs that also have a ton of money, e.g. Arkansas. Brea scratched all of them out.

"role player" is a really dirty connotation in basketball...he's THE ELITE three point shooter in the sport, he's got great size. His role is make shots, but he's also going to have an offense tailored around his skill set. People get too caught up in role play = bad or small role...he's going to be a vital corner stone piece on one of those teams - and going to be paid handsomely to boot.

I really do encourage people to listen to that podcast with the agent. I think we all look at only the negative sides of the portal from a CRP's perspective, but he also talked about an anonymous coach who hated the portal last year because he had so many spots to full, but loves it this year because they can sprinkle in a few guys + get rid of a couple guys who weren't a fit. I can easily easily easily see Rick fitting that description -- especially next year.

The key to him being happy here is that we have the NIL to retain his guys + continue to build on a foundation + have the money to get one or two impact guys each year. If we were a NIL-poor school and would lose his recruits, I'd be deeply pessimistic. but we aren't. In some ways, recruiting has changed, but honestly, don't you guys think CRP was always recruiting high character guys from families who weren't bag chasing?
HI dK423 you have mentioned a podcast, which one are you referring too, I would love to listen to it.
