SJU Portal Targets

And we will be outbid because SJU will not be paying kids these silly numbers that are being thrown around. Rick Pitino is very serious about kids earning their NIL, not just because they (or this handler) THINK that's what they deserve
I'm not saying this to be combative because I know everything you say is sourced and with no agenda outside of STJ wanting to do well. But you've been someone who's been skeptical of Trilly's "reporting" of the NIL $$$s thrown around about Cliff and others. Have you heard anything differently recently?

I totally agree with you that he's likely getting info from agents who have incentive to raise kid's prices. I'm legitimately just wondering.

Of course, but thx 😎

I've been skeptical only in spots where I know what the truth is. And I've always said it's not Trilly's fault, he's being given info from first hand people, but those people have ulterior motives - like leverage and driving up the price. Cliff is obviously a top name in the portal, he has big big big fish after him...and the longer time goes on, the more other schools will come in and drive prices up and pin each other against each other out of desperation. Do I think Cliff will get a big NIL absolutely. Do I think it may be higher than I initially thought given what I just said above, probably. But that's where I think SJU will make a smart decision and potentially pivot if this drags another month or so which it very well might.

There will be info on a Cliff visit soon. You'll see St. John's in the mix with some big names and everyone will think SJU has no shot as tends to be the narrative. But they are in the mix.

Back to the NIL numbers thing like there is a rumor floating around that Dre Davis turned down 450k from Seton Hall...Seton Hall's TOTAL NIL is collecting moth balls and can not sustain that. Kadary allegedly is asking for one million dollars. Like people are not living in reality with these numbers.

Makes a lot of sense, thanks for explaining. The tone of your last comment made it seem like the price has continued to go up (which would make sense with paultz/sju79 both saying he backed out of an earlier deal). Definitely trust the staff to make the right calculations here, and in general.

This is not accurate. Yes, we had those 4 in the bag. But after the dismal stretch, we played very well in the last 7 or 8 games incld the BE tourney, beating Crighton, Butler away, Seton Hall, and playing UCONN tougher than most anyone all year.
I don’t want to hijack this thread, but Butler was absolutely terrible. They would be the last place team most years if not for the historically bad duo of Georgetown and DePaul. We never got better as a team. Our schedule did.

We were not a good basketball team. We weren’t a bad basketball team, but we weren’t good.

We need a whole different caliber of roster to get off the bubble — which is where I think most of us would expect to be year 2 with a hall of fame coach.

Cliff’s NIL offers are out there already and obviously higher than SJU generous offer. Everyone knows that, but he still finds SJU appealing, so of course they have a shot. Essentially it is no secret Johnnies are in this, but we’ll see if what we offer overall is good enough.

I feel like there’s going to be push back from collectives running NIL’s. Maybe not now but soon. Market always sets the price. Some of these leeches will be to the detriment of these kids.

I’ll continue to be a St. John’s fan but all this unrestrained greed is making it very hard to be enthusiastic. I’m glad I have the Knicks to distract me from this mess.

Unlikely but possible a bird in the hand situation will develop if Amari WIlliams or another competent big is ready to commit to SJU while Cliff is still weighing his options. Another maze to navigate in this new world

We should have made the tournament this year if not for the blatant discrimination of the Selection Committee with regard to the Big East. I don’t think we need a whole different caliber of player though. What we need are players who better fit what Coach Pitino wants to do. There are currently over 800 players in the portal. We have a great staff and we have enough of an NIL budget to be competitive for a whole host of quality players. We are not going to land every player we target. We are going to get out bid for some players by some school who has donor who’s just willing to throw money around. But, as long as we get quality players who most of all better fit Pitino’s system we’ll be fine and I believe we’ll be in the tournament next season. I believe we have the staff and enough NIL money to do that. This is just going to take a while to shake out.

Trilly on SJU not being involved on Jordan Pope - "They told me a few days ago they're passing on him now. Didn't get a reason why."

Thought you said numbers being thrown around were made up??

This is directed at no one, so no one take it personal but stop expecting players to just commit here because 79 or Trilly said they will. You’re lucky you’re getting information from people like them in the first place so don’t complain when blah-blah doesn’t commit here the next day or week. The entitlement is annoying to read and you’d have no idea they were even an option if you hadn’t read it.

These are young people and now there’s money involved. Let the chips land where they may and enjoy it when players sign. Im not Trilly but I’ll predict we have a full roster by September.

North Carolina looking closely at him depending on RJ Davis situation I hear.
I saw UNC on the list of schools who contacted Pope and figured this is one of their contingency options if Davis decides to leave.

Amari is visiting next week. Hypothetically if they can get a commitment there quickly, I wouldn't be surprised if they say "yup this works" and let Cliff plus his demands go. (For the record I'm a big big fan of Amari, and I think he would be a great fit here. I love how he passes the ball and he's obviously a defensive wizard)

Would Amari and Osobar be a potential combo deal, considering they were both HS teammates?
