SJU Portal Targets

Also remember the type of kid Pitino historically recruits. He wasn't a 5 star merchant like Calipari. Obviously transfer portal changes everything but I do agree with the sense of entitlement. I am confident the staff is taking all the lessons learned from this time last year and applying them.
Agree. This is classic market FOMO going on here on these boards. Last year we did the same and Rick P built an entire team that really should have made the tourney this year. I’m positive we will be fine.

I agree with both of you and trust the process.

Pitino, Abdelmassih, Macon, Repole.......we will have a competitive roster.

This is the crazy part everyone thinks this past year was a disaster. I agree that it could have been better and that is what is disappointing but he overturned the entire roster and still won more league games then SJU has won in 13 years. And was thisclose to being so much better.

And now he has a good base of talent and good recruits and can be more selective in want he wants from the Portal.

And he is tremendous coach.

He described that team as one of the least talented he’s ever coached.

I think it will be a helluva’lot better.

No he didn't. When did he say anything about being the "least talented?" He said they were the "least enjoyable."

And he also said a ton of good things in addition to those bad things.

To sit there an cherry pick the things he said at a time when he obviously was frustrated is not fair.

He was devasted they did not get to go the NCAA's. Not accepting the NIT bid had ZERO to do with saying they "were not enjoyable to coach" a month earlier.

I don't think most people think last year was a disaster. This was a kenpom top 25 team. The result should've been better, and some of that was just luck (i.e., creighton game, KPI being terrible etc.). I also think pitino probably should've made some changes earlier in the year to suit the team's strengths (dingle being more aggressive with the mid-range game, etc.). But it's not like we need a massive overhaul or talent upgrade to be a tourney team next year, so I agree with your larger point.

People peed in their pants when Mike Anderson went 5-13 in his first year, had zero shot at the NCAAs but because they led Creighton (#1 seed in the BET) at halftime so many people convinced themselves his first year was a roaring success.

Pitino overturns the whole roster, goes 11-9 in the BE finishes 5th and makes it to Friday semis for first time in 24 years and some are like, "we can't repeat that mistake..."

Wrong.

He commented all year how they lacked physical talent. Everything from “we aren’t athletic enough to pull away from teams” to the notorious lacking lateral quickness, to not being able to play the type of defense his past teams have, to point blank saying several times this team was not athletic.

Who here acted like this past season was a disaster? No one did. A mild disappointment, yes, but disaster?
Last season can only be viewed as a disappointment because we did not get into the big dance.

That said, the selection committee is largely responsible for that because they ignored the fact that we were good enough to play UConn to a five point game this postseason. That is something that no team that qualified or was selected to be in the NCAA tournament can say.

And we did that again during the regular season, albeit when Clingan was out.
