SJU Portal Targets

I'm with ya. I hate this crap.

Just make the players employees, they and the schools can negotiate contracts from 1-4 year duration, then it will all be clean and aboveboard.

I watch college basketball not only for love of the sport but to root for kids I like and watch them develop over a few years.

That is just about a thing of the past along with the ability to properly coach a lot of these kids. It's a crying shame.

Also, there is an RJ Luis thread someplace, those of you who want to whinge one way or the other about him should do it there not here. People are looking at this thread for SJU portal Targets, not exits.
Well said

Man, if we only had that $1M last year we could have beat out Kansas for Hunter Dickinson by quite a bit. The market is really moving up for these athletes if Clayton can pull a mill!
No clue what happens with Clayton but when uber successful people like Repole get hands on like now a lot more times than not they win. Pretty much he wins at everything. When I see this Clayton thing now he's all in and it won't be just for 1 guy

Important to note that this time last year the rule was undergrads only had one free transfer and would have to sit out a year if they transferred a second time. So when Pitino and staff recruited Luis and Taylor they felt they'd be pretty much locked in until they graduated.

Then the rug was pulled out from underneath that idea in the middle of the season. That may play to our advantage with other players this cycle but obviously disrupts the plans Rick had for those guys

Guys like Pitino and his friends and associates hate to lose with a passion. That is what drives them. When they perceive that they got screwed, then they kick it into overdrive. I fully expect scorched earth over the next 12 1/2 months.

One of those schools re Luis is correct. Spoke with him Thurs and was 99% back unless big offer...got big offer so now we'll see. Paultz has been spot on with his names....also when a kid reports "hearing from" that means nothing. A few kids i deal with have entered and like dopes have told some of these insiders names that are not close to accurate. St J has focused on a few kids entered and know of a bunch now still playing who they have a feel for.
For those that are naive, me included, how is someone not in the portal contacted with an offer? Would that be considered a form of tampering or a violation or it simply someone not from the offering school making the offer?

They all have agents or family members who speak for them. Contacts are made during the season. Ongoing discussions. And there are brokers/ middlemen who bring schools and agents together. The sneaker companies, AAU coaches all in the game as well.

So we heard so much early on that Pitinos second year is when major advances were made, not just by the teams but for players within his system. If we are not keeping Luis and Taylor along with Zuby, Wilcher, Dunlap and Drissa than we are back to another "first year" and if the portal players we bring in are all players with only one year of eligibility remaining, the following year will be a third "first year". Pitino will get sick of it and move on. I hate to be negative but we probably only have coach for five years or so and just went through one without making the tournament. I keep thinking back to all the excitement in Charleston and wonder if we are being set up for more pain. Forgive me as a Mets, Jets and SJU fan. At least we can be sure the Rangers will win the cup !

RP has a lot of work to do. I have full confidence that he molds this roster into a NCAA Championship caliber team. Potential rotation for next year and holes to fill:

PG Transfer portal
SG Wilcher (I haven't seen it from him yet, but RP seems to be very high on him)
SF Cruz/Taylor/Transfer portal
PF Transfer portal
C Transfer portal
BE Zuby (PF/C) - He may slide into the starting lineup, but best if he gets 20-25 off the bench at PF/C. It depends on who RP lands in the portal.
BE Glover (SG)
BE Transfer portal (SG/SF)
BE Traore (PF) - He may be gone, but I love this kid as a depth big man. I hope he stays.
BE Dunlap (SF)
BE Maker (C)
BE Lefty (PG/SG)

The problem with this is that our first year with Pitino was so much better than any of our preceding 20 years. This team would be favored over every team we have had, including the tournament teams, since 1998. If we finish KenPom #25 for the next 4 years we are going to win a lot of games and probably make 4 tournaments. That is a much better indicator of how this team actually performed than what the idiot committee and bad luck in close quad 1 games says. If this year's team is what Pitino can do needing to replace 10 players in 6 weeks we will be more than fine.

This isn’t a portal question but feel it’s pertinent to this thread/playing time. How old is the Greek kid? He’s not a true freshman right?
