Berry then left for San Jacinto rather than sit out a year and I believe broke the world's record accumulating some sixty credits in one year and returning to SJU in 84-85.
Sounds like there may have been a Walt Berry and a Wally Berry also taking classes and the three of them combined their efforts under one transcript.
He didn’t gain 69credits at St. Jacinto. NCAA counted the credits Berry took while at St. John’s his first year when he sat out. Good enough to be counted and included with his Juco credits but due to other convoluted rules/regulations/reasoning, not good enough to make him eligible after that first year.

Berry went to Juco and stayed true to his word returning to St. John’s despite some heavy interest and push from other programs
Yes, and I recall Louie commending him publicly for keeping his word. But ‘the truth’ is The Truth should’ve stayed 1 more year!
The UNC news can't hurt, but not really sure how it impacts our situation. You're talking about major football schools here. Didn't we already say they get special treatment compared to basketball only schools? I'm hoping for Heron as much as I can but I'm trying to expect the worst so I'm not disappointed.

As someone else said, we have enough talent to make the tournament without him. I think at least making the dance is the expectation without him and with him the expectation should be making a top 25 appearance at some point in addition to the dance. With any other program with this talent level, this should be a reasonable expectation. The only real hole is another big, but we would have big guards to hopefully minimize the impact.
I think the new transfer rules, the UNC ‘football’ decision (Carolina noted far more for hoops than pigskin play), the general animosity to the NCAA, the impending scandals, and the Heron Family’s genuine needs here combine to form overwhelming pressure on the NCAA to ‘do the right thing’ for an above-average student athlete and his family.
The only question imo, is ‘when’.
But this happens.
It’s too obvious for even the NCAA to screw it up.

I don't think the incessant repeating of Ma and Pa operation does anything helpful. Today everyone has access to a computer and these kids talk to each other if any of them read the board, minimizing the school or it's leadership couldn't in anyway be helpful.

I think these college students are smart enough to realize this is a forum where people BS positive or negative. I also think they realize this happens in any forum at any school.

Kids, parents, coaches know all about St. John’s positives and negatives without reading the message boards. If any of them depends solely on message boards, then we probably want to think twice about them.

I'll stop referring to it as mom and pop when the school actually does something otherwise, or, alternatively, stops with the mom and pop bs.

Nova, Gtown, Hall, Providence, etc. are hiring either a big firm or a prominent compliance attorney if they're in our situation. In fact, they're hiring one the second they found out they may even be in the running to land someone like this.

Not acceptable. Won't shut up.

Mike, we aren’t talking about college kids. We are talking about young fickle kids who could change over anything. I just think talking negatively about our program or school serves NO useful purpose, but then I guess you can rationalize anything.

Perhaps SJU is handling this well. Do we know that they have decided not to hire an experienced firm?

I guess "kid" is relative. I'm 29...I wouldn't consider a 20 or 21 yr old a "kid". If I was 50 I probably would. Fickle yes, but every forum has positive and negative things that are said about whatever the topic at hand is. I'm sure they realize this. These aren't 5 yr olds who believe anything they see at face value. As someone else said, if they make their decisions based on fan discussions in a forum then do we want them here anyway? If you're going to play here under the bright lights in the biggest sports media market in the US, then you better be ready to handle this stuff. Zach tweets out some negative things sometimes, is he included in this?

Mike the kids I was alluding to were young high school, kids being romanced by many people to go to the schools they had attachments to. These kids, (recruits) are not 20-21 years of age. Mike, you also said maybe your perspective would be different if you 50. Well, sir, I am 80 yrs old. I am a proud Alum of SJU. I get kind of hot when I hear posters minimizing the school or program.

Dear Frank some dont want to get it and some just cant get it. I suggest you stop wasting your precious time in this instance as he will never take the 30 seconds to attempt to understand that another point of view exists, and in fact it just might be the correct point of view.

I went to sju and im proud of it! St. Johns ia a great school and we dont need the negativity because it doesn't help the University and its usually smoke from some other fire....sju is a very generous university and has always played by the rules. I visited many universities with my children during thier college search and I think sju is a fine choice for a young student. Go St. Johns!

Wow thinking about 17 - 22 year old kids cant be influenced by what they read on the internet. OMG whatever your smoking please pass the dutchie on the left hand side. Kids this age are extremely impressionable and are easily influenced by their professors, peer-groups and stuff they read on boards and blogs. Yes your whining on here can make a difference. As far as the NCAA goes what is your experience with them? Do you know how they operate? how to get to the inner Kabal? Do you really think that a group of good ol boys who run the thing really are impressed with a top elite NY Lawyer, or is it more likely that Mario going to talk to Condi will get more done. Why do NC, Alabama, Kentucky, Duke et al have preferential treatment, they are part of the Kabal, They also bring large chunks of revenue to the NCAA. I would say more is done with a trip to Augusta than at a hearing.

Not trying to be difficult...just think that posting stuff that may be seen as negative by some is akin to yelling "you suck" at opposing players. In other words, little to no effect. If there's a real correlation between what's posted in forums and major life decisions of student athletes, then let's go on a campaign to get Brooks and Wilson back by trashing their schools.

Let's get Heron eligible and Rice on board so we have some real glimmers of hope and finally get back to a program that matters nationally.

I did not attend St. John’s as I am “ just a New York guy and a fan”... it is very refreshing to see posters support their alma mater! AND acknowledge the tangible progress we’ve made under Chris...
Including a really nice roster!!!
Go St. John’s beat G’town, Villanova and every damn single team on your schedule!!! Why not? You are capable.
all the best
SS&G
( beat Navy AND Air Force lol)

Zach B re Heron waiver update & SJU chances;

“There is no news they are waiting on NCAA. I’d say cautious optimism”

As noted by others here, NCAA has been liberal lately re: college football waivers. We’ll see how that translates to hoops. My sense is staff is also cautiously optimistic fwiw.
