SJU-Detroit Game Thread

When was the last time the starting PG of a BE didn't make a 3 pointer all season? I think it is a strong possibility this year. Nuri's 3s are not even close. We are a better team with him and Stith on the bench and Green running the show.

Where oh where has our transition offense gone?

It's certainly gone south.

On another note: This could very, well be a long season. I'm actually expecting it to be one. But, some posters are quick to throw in the towel. I've been watching sports for nearly 34 years and I've seen things change on a dime for teams (whether, in a team's favor or against it).

TIS, well said. It amazes me how many people have given up.

This is a young team, still getting used to playing with each other, and they are not playing for the coach who recruited them. I think that's got to count for something, not having Lavin on that bench.

Everybody should just calm down and despite the frustrating losses, we should all enjoy watching these guys gel over the course of this season. I'm still not expecting to see an NCAA bid at the end of this season, but hey, who knows? ;)

I said that. ;)

I think the lay-off will be good for us. The team needs to clear its head and get back at it in practice. The most alarming thing that I see right now is the inability to hit a high per-centage of shots. I know this is going to be a stupid statement, but you cant win if u dont put the ball in the basket. We were able to out rebound Detroit by 15, we hit the same amount of 3's 5 and the same number of FT's, but still we were out of it early. We shot awful in the first half and not counting a late couple of 3's horrible in the second half.

Hopefully getting Garrett here in a couple of weeks will help with depth. Like I said before Stith doesnt supply enough offense and is too small on the defensive end, garrett will give us some more size and scoring and rebounding ability.

OK not much excitement in the game tonite but as usual some good commentary. Who knows what the next game will bring

This slowdown strategy makes Louie look like Paul Westhead.

Don't care if we only play 6 or 7.... this team has to RUN. They cannot score any other way.

+1.

I also agree with this, as well. We need to push the ball even after made baskets. We're also not particularly attacking any longer, either.

Maybe, a few days off will do us some good.

You really did.

I really think we will see a different team come Fordham.. I just see them going back to what they did the first 4 games. getting up and down the court and beating teams in transition. This slow down pass around the perimiter does not work if u cant hit the jumpers as the clock winds down.

Agree 100%.

However, they need to make those layups, running or walking up the court.

I agree. Obviously they are not playing very well right now. But let's try not to lose faith!! Not sure if the players read this site or not, but if they do, I'm sure the last thing they want to read are posts from 'fans' saying how bad they suck. I don't think that that is really helping their confidence at all.

This team is going to come out one night soon and fire on all cylinders and that will be the turning point of the season. These boys can't be done...they haven't even started yet.

For one I have not lost confidence in this team. They are young, and have played 9 games as a unit. They make mistakes, but you learn from your mistakes and as they evolve into a more coherent group these mistakes will become less and less.

And I still remember watching games in the 70's and 80's with Al Mcguire and Billy Packard on NBC, and when a freshmen made a mistake Mcguire would all say "you know what billy, the good thing about freshman is that they become sophomores"

This team will take it lumps this year, but they will win there share of games and in the years to come they will be the ones putting up the lopsided W's.

I'm sorry, but there is nothing enjoyable about watching a major conference team lose to Northeastern (3-3) and Detroit (4-6). Come on, these aren't even good mid-major teams.

Nobody expected this team to really compete at a high level this year due to our youth, but to lose to these 2 schools is absolutely disgraceful. I thought we were bringing in high level players who would show their skill level early. So far, the only player who has shown anything has been Harkless.

Yes, we all expected this team to take its lumps this season. But I don't think anybody expected losses to bad mid-major teams in Northeastern and Detroit. I figured on sheer talent alone this team would be able to compete at a high level and maybe even pull off a few upsets along the way. Based on the level of skill I'm seeing out on that court, I think they'll be lucky to pull of 10 wins this season. I hope Lavin is out there recruiting hard because there is a serious lack of talent on this roster.

As for the officiating, it's called home court advantage and sometimes it goes against you..the UCLA game last year was awful officiating.. Tonite we were homecourted but, it would not have made a difference in the final result.

The perimeter shooting from this group has been disappointing and  Lavin needs to bring in a shooter for next year. Someone who can drill a 3 regularly, otherwise we're gonna get zoned every game like last year. Lindsay is ineffective playing against zone and he seems to have lost his handle.

Way too many bunnies missed underneath all night... for a moment I thought Evans and Burrell were back on the court..

Not a pretty game to watch as we really made no comeback run or defensive stops when it mattered.

Obviously, the missing pieces for 2011 , Sampson, Pelle and Garrett have hurt us significantly as they gave us some size and bulk inside.

It's going to be a learning year and we're going to take our lumps the rest of the way..

Lindsey doesn't seem to be the same since the missed ft's at the garden

+1.

you were right about Lindsey.

He looks lost out there now. I think the staff need to turn him loose again. He looks like a fish out of water now.

I'm sure he has been deeply affected by those missed foul shots but his only offense is penetrating for layups, and recently has been stuffed by the defenses big men. Obviously, he is no point guard and has had too many turnovers in his last few games.
We all agree we need power forwards and a center but must recruit a point guard for next year.

Whatever one thought of the refs tonight, they were light years better then the guys doing the Packers-Giants game yesterday. That was incompetence of the highest order.

We also lost to two bad mid-majors last season (Bonaventure and Fordham). And last season seemed to work out well for us. I don't think that we will end up with the same success that we did last year, but I don't think this season is a bust by any means...

I dont think there is lack of talent, there is a lot of raw talent that needs to beguided and shown how to win games. When these players were in high school everything came easy to them, but now they are playing against equal talent every night. I also dont think that losing to mid majors is as bad as it once was. The kids are good, they just happen to play in non major conferences. And if you look around the country mid majors are winning every nite. This past week end 4, A 10 lost to mid major opponents.

We have 12 days to get ready for fordham, Lavin will be working them in practice and I think a better team will take the court at MSG.

Gift and the 4 freshmen, sounds like a 50's folk group.
That's our best line up.

Spot on TIS!
Sad to see Nurideen become as big of liability as Malik Stith. The guy is playing with fear in face. Six turnovers and just four points against a Detroit is a new low for him in a very young season. Forget the NBA, the question is will he start again.

Very disappointed in coach Dunlap in this game. A transition offense would have collected fouls on Detroit earlier and the half court game completely took Nurideen out of the flow as he seems to only be a dribble-drive player at this point and has no confidence in taking an outside shot or creating with the ball in his hands.

This game, without Nurideen disappearing, and a12 rebound advantage coupled with great FT shooting should have been a W for SJ.

I consider this loss a Mitzvah by SJ to Detroit on their special night.

Time to win three in a row!

Harp on D'Angelo all you want.

But the team/coaches have done nothing to get him a decent shot.

We have plenty of game film showing how to swing the ball against a zone for an open three.

He had plenty of good looks, especially for someone supposed to be one of the best shooters in his class

He was chucking them up three feet behind the line.

How can our coaches allow our best shooter stay up top against a zone? Move him along the baseline and swing the ball for a corner shot.

Exactly, have him move from corner to corner with G.G. setting a pick as he cuts through the middle. Remember the picks Wennington set for Mullin as he moved from one corner to the other.
