SJU-Detroit Game Thread

I think what concerns me most about this game is that we didn't get beat in the areas we're all so concerned about...

We actually out rebounded Detroit, and after a quick start they cooled off from 3.

Rebounding: SJU 37 Detroit 25

3 point %: SJU 23% Detroit 27%

Today we just got beat. Didn't score on the easy put-backs off the offensive glass. And our defense produced far too few turnovers. No steals from Dom or Nuri? Who were guarding the perimeter most of the game...
An aggressive trapping defense needs to be better than that.

The worse part is, I'd be hesitant to tell these kids to play the passing lanes more aggressively because they already fall for every ball fake thrown at them.

Experience can't come soon enough

Ahh, posted this in the wrong topic. Not sure how to delete/move it. But if one of the mods knows. Please do.

Harp on D'Angelo all you want.

But the team/coaches have done nothing to get him a decent shot.

We have plenty of game film showing how to swing the ball against a zone for an open three.

Decent shot? What game were you watching- he had open 3 's all night-- he just missed them.

Still waiting to see the genius of Mike Dunlap.

This slow down game plan may have been the only chance against UK, but against an undermanned Detroit?

Agree. We need to move the ball upcourt quickly, especially since we can't shoot. Get to the basket before the defense can set up.

Hard to say you want to run a transition offense when your point guard is the biggest liability on the floor

Do not know if you noticed Queensbridge but Nurideen has not been the point guard running the offense the past two games. It has been Phil Green! NL played around 20 foul and turnover-laden minutes the past two games .....a complete non-factor.
The team should have run and taken its chances in transition since it was obvious in the first 10 minutes that it was out of sync in the half court.

I just dont think that our problem is mostly a coaching related issue like running more transition offense or getting D'Angelo more open shots- we lack playmaking talent. I dont buy the "they're just freshmen" argument- I'm not talking about not knowing when to switch off screens or forgetting to box out the weakside rebounder, I'm talking about making plays, showing talent. Besides Moe on occasion, I just don't see it. Hope I am wrong.

I think the lay-off will be good for us. The team needs to clear its head and get back at it in practice. The most alarming thing that I see right now is the inability to hit a high per-centage of shots. I know this is going to be a stupid statement, but you cant win if u dont put the ball in the basket. We were able to out rebound Detroit by 15, we hit the same amount of 3's 5 and the same number of FT's, but still we were out of it early. We shot awful in the first half and not counting a late couple of 3's horrible in the second half.

Hopefully getting Garrett here in a couple of weeks will help with depth. Like I said before Stith doesnt supply enough offense and is too small on the defensive end, garrett will give us some more size and scoring and rebounding ability.

Late threes by Harrison and Green mean nothing. The game was already decided and they just shot them up out of sequence and the normal offence.

This team is going to come out one night soon and fire on all cylinders and that will be the turning point of the season. These boys can't be done...they haven't even started yet.

So true

Deep down I really think it is going to be our next game against Fordham. I just have this feeling that these kids are mad about the past few games, which to me is a good thing, no one should enjoy losing. And how good would it be if Coach Lavin is feeling better and back on the bench.

Every ex coach that comments on this team raves about the practice, the looks, the sets, the execution. Everything is good/great except the finish. They cannot shoot. Under 30% from 3. Like Looie used to say. You put the ball in the basket and the coach looks good.

They're not shooting well. But we don't need to be snipers from the 3 point line. Detroit shot 27% last night from behind the arc, and Kentucky was exactly at 30%; for the season we're shooting 26%. That's not our Achilles heel right now. But it's certainly not helping.

In literaly every aspect of the game we need to be slightly better. We need to make 2 or 3 more 3's a game, yes. But we also need to generate 2 or 3 more steals, at least, to be the transition team we want to be. We need to rebound slightly better. We need to be strong enough to put back a few more of those rebounds. We need to make sharper cuts, and cleaner picks etc etc. I could go on.

But the truth is we're a notch behind in every facet of the game. It's not just one thing. We've improved our rebounding and our foul shooting, some. But over the course of the season everything needs to get better.

We improved on our rebounding and free throw percentages but fell in other categories,  notably steals, as teams adjust to us. It is a work in progress where someday it will all come together.

Anybody else like what Dom did tonight? He looked much more comfortable taking the jumpshot and had good results. Played a real strong game. Improvement already showing.

Liked his game from day 1. he is just reached the tip of what he will do for us. I see him with the ability to take over games.

Best thing about Dom's game tonight?.. He played nearly every minute from start to finish and ended with zero turnovers, and only three fouls.

Do will be excellent when he finds his offense even more and learns what he can do out there. Love what he brings to the table.

We' e improved our ft shooting because Nuri hasn't been the one taking the shots!

He needs to start.
Gift and the 4 freshmen,

Our rebounding was better due to the fact we played a smaller team the the others we have played

we need a couple of juco's next year. these freshman are going to take a while to develop. harkless is the only one that has game right now

Once we recruit some big players who can rebound and block shots and play D I can see hark once deloping his ball handling better be a great guard
