Shamorie Ponds

I think Ponds is the frontrunner.

Zion and RJ will cancel each other out, he will outplay Howard, and the Duke game will be an opportunity to seal it.
Grant Williams is the one that worries me most.

I also believe Mullin would very much be in the discussion for National Coach of they Year with 25 wins. We'll know more later tonight.
I can't tell. Are posts like these facetious?
Have to be. Cannot seriously think Mullin is a coach of the year candidate!

I think some fans are just excessive “homers.” Ponds is having a terrific year so far, but he may not win the Haggerty Award, no less national player of the year.

Unfortunately no. I got hit by reality like a goddamn sledgehammer prior to the DePaul game with Ponds out. I didn't even watch the game. Of course that would happen at St. John's....a 99% chance of winning turned to zero with one injury. I'm beginning a process of stepping away from the program, posting, and sports in general.

I was more talking about the Mullin comment.

But even with Ponds yes taking 1 player out changes things significantly. I don't watch enough of the other teams to comment if the same holds true on their end.

I think you'll see the same from Duke. On the list of things that you need to be good, handling the ball/creating is #1. I don't know why we are always one injury at PG away from being awful. I suspect the staff thought they had that answered with Dixon. It's just our luck as a program to have Ponds go down the game after Dixon transfers. If I was up to me, I'd always have a kid like Markquis Nowell or Malik Boothe to play 15 mpg and be ready to play back QB.

I thought a 25+ win season with a win @ Duke would have warranted Mullin winning the award and could have possibly helped the program finally turn the corner. Winning 25 doesn't look possible now.

Team has to be able to play without Ponds. We should not be on the court without a workable alternative, especially in this positionless offense.

Heard an unverified rumor that Ponds sitting out was disciplinary, unrelated to what's been speculated so far. The rumor didn't come from someone within SJU, want to make that clear since I know a lot of people close to the program. But the source was somewhat credible because he is part of the local college sports scene - also not one of the well known people I know.

But all in all is an interesting rumor. I would just think that if the reason was disciplinary, the offense would have to be significant to sit out a Big East contest. All in all, though, no player can be bigger than the program or the rules.

The thing that gives this a little credibility is that at halftime Ponds went out onto the floor as the team shot around, dribbled around a bit, and showed no visible signs of a sore back. Of course, that does not mean it wasn't an injury.

Keep in mind, rumor may be purely crap.

Best chance to win without Ponds (if we must), is for Clark to find his stroke from 3 point range. It was not there at all on Saturday, but he didn't play out of his normal game, so I'm confident that he can find it.

I’ve had my doubts about the reason for the DNP since it was first announced. Like I said before, for him to have missed this game for a health reason, and for him to have not even dressed and given it a go, it would have had to have been a pretty serious injury IMO. Having said that, I can’t imagine what he could have done that was bad enough for CM to sit him for a very important game, especially not at this juncture in his career.

Shamorie Ponds is making progress, I hear. Worked out on court yesterday. Still status is uncertain for tomorrow #sjubb

Having heard rumors before DP game of other issues v injury precluding Ponds playing, I’ll go with legitimate injury after hearing from some credible folks. That said, nothing surprises me.

If he was sat for disciplinary action, you would think it's a huge thing he did. If it was for his back truly, I hope he's not pulling a LoVett.

We haven't been able to get out of our own way for years.

1. Obekpa caught with blunt right before NCAA's, gets suspended and we get blown out immediately.
2. D'Lo suspended in crucial games we needed to make tourney...ended up not making it.
3. Jordan missed some games for disciplinary action/academics I believe and is now in prison.
4. DeLaRosa gets into locker room fight and leaves program.
5. LoVett teaks ankle and quits team permanently.
6. Now maybe Ponds too?

Dear lord...I've really followed closely since the Lavin era began and we've had more drama than many successful programs have had in decades. Let's hope it's just a bad back and he plays vs. Creighton so we can finally get back on track.

Didn't Jordan sit out with what was called an injury but really was a suspension at one point his sophomore year?
Kind of sort of remember that happening.

I think that's prudent. What was told to me was purely rumor, but was certainly plausible. In college, you deal with a lot of kids that need to be disciplined, need to follow rules, etc. I'm hoping its an injury, a minor one at that.

Yikes. Is this in reaction to new news/rumors? Or a reaction to previous posts in this thread?

It's nothing new. Just like I said a few weeks ago. Always something here.

Yea his point is that there is "always something" even when things are seemingly going well. Like Dixon leaving even though it shouldn't really be a huge issue this year. Or Shamorie having a nagging injury which hopefully only keeps him out of one BE game. Or Keita getting hurt early and clearly working his way into being the player they think he can be long term.
Beast, was Williams DNP two games ago possibly disciplinary and could the two be conflated?
If what I heard has any basis in fact, the answer would be no. But as I've already stated, the rumor had barely enough credibly to report, and not enough to ask for validation. Also if it were disciplinary, in this case I think Mullin would just not comment on it and move on, especially if only a 1 game thing.

We certainly appear to have more than our share, which becomes magnified because our program has not yet turned the corner in terms of success. But also to be fair, all programs experience this sort of stuff to one degree or another, even the Dukes and Kentuckys etc.
