Shamorie Ponds

Ponds playing the point to prove to the NBA scouts he’s worthy of being drafted has been a near disaster. Going an entire half with 2 points and 1 assist is not sustainable. The team has no size and no depth. The team has few seasoned players. There is no margin for error. When the team is running and shooting great we win. It’s contagious. Figueroa is improving. They should go to him more. Seems like he can dominate driving to the basket. Ponds needs to play off the ball and shoot often.

When he first did it it reminded me of when Kobe, in response to critics saying he shot too much, pretty much refused to shoot for the entire second half of a game. But Shamorie's done it more than once, so if it was a pout like Kobe's actions, it's long past time it ended.

Back in 85, Georgetown came up with a strategy to let anyone not named chris or Walter to shoot after an early season loss in Landover. The rest was easy for them despite future nba players Wennington, Jackson, Jones on our roster plus a very capable Willie Glass.

Defenses have shut down Ponds by keying on him, closing off all paths to the basket where he is met by 2 or 3 bigger defenders. For our offense to work when he drives and dished or finds the open men on the perimeter they have to make open shots. Teams dare us to shoot, and no one on our squad has been consistent enough from long range to scare anyone. We've also become horrendous off the offensive glass with most missed 3s had no one crashing the boards.

Bottom line, for ponds to produce others have to score. Herons injury is a killer.

For those interested, Ponds now has 1,795 career points and is currently #7.

Barring really bad games or injury he'll probably hit Top 5 after only 3 seasons.

1. MULLIN - 2,440
2. SEALY - 2,402
3. HARRISON - 2,178
4. LOPEZ - 1,927
5. ZOWALUK - 1,826 (3 seasons too)
6. HAMILTON - 1,810

Whatever happens this season, I really hope this kid has a prosperous career, whether it be in NBA, overseas or some combination of.

A bit enigmatic at times perhaps, but have enjoyed him take over games & bail us out many times. Do I put him up there as an all time great? No. That said, on a flawed roster a great deal falls on his shoulders and he answers the bell much more often than not. Beating out Providence in a nip and tuck battle for Ponds was crucial to getting SJU out of a deep ditch.

All in all, he really made attending and watching most games so much fun. I suspect we will appreciate him more next season with a less skilled roster and no one who can take a game over like he has so often. Hope my sense of next year’s group is proven wrong.

Ponds leaves ( at this point) he's a late 2nd rounder according to the draft boards. The unthinkable, if he stays- the highest scorer in St Johns long history! Crazy to think about. That would be his legacy
