Shamorie Ponds

When a team overachieves, the credit is shared. When a team underachieves, so too should the blame be shared. This is not Shamorie and 4 other scrubs. This is Shamorie and some talent. If, at the end of the year, this season turns out to be a failure, no one is absolved of blame as far as I'm concerned.

Agree and it starts with the staff and Shamorie is also near the top of the blame line. His numbers are deceiving given the amount of time he controls the ball. He needed to show superior point guard skills this year but has managed to slip into a late 2nd round pick. Ja Morant has come out of nowhere at Murray State to make Shamorie an afterthought in the draft. In these last games of the season he needs to play smart and keep his teammates focused so as not to disappear from the NBA draft entirely.

Shamorie in response to Mullin mentioning he should be in the league.........

Would love to see Shamorie, Heron & Figgy all have strong games tomorrow, including all three taking it strong to the hoop and hitting the three when there. Don't think that's happened since first Creighton win. No way PC beats us again if all three play well.

Let’s all enjoy however many Games Shamorie still
Has in his St John’s career .,He has given us all that he has in the 3 Years he’s been here . Which is quite a lot in my mind . He adjusted his game this Year to get our 2 newcomers , Figgy and Heron involved in the offense . That adjustment may cost him the BE POY Award that he easily could have won , if he decided to continue to lead the BE in Scoring again . Sure Howard has had great year with big numbers scoring but, in head to head with Ponds , he is second best ! No doubt about it . I still think Slick isn’t a 100 percent healthy . He takes a beating every game with double teams , fouled every time he goes to the Rim and bumped all game . It takes its toll . Yet , he continues to be our Playmaker at the expense of his own Scoring . We will remember Shamorie Ponds many years after his career in BB is over . He has to be in any group selecting the Best Players to put on a Red Uniform . Ever .We have had many great Players over the Years . Ponds is definitely in that mix. Hope he takes us deep into the NCAA and maybe a BE Title as well .

I'm sure Howard has no issue trading the 2 SJU losses vs. Ponds for being ranked in the Top 15.

Ponds still listed as a late second round pick on NBADraft.net.

And guess what, they now have Justin Simon listed as a late second round pick in their 2020 mock draft!

Much respect for Shamorie's perspective on this situation. Hope that this season ends on a successful note and he is able to pursue his NBA DREAMS.

The way I see it, Shamorie has proven all he can at this point. The further we go in the tourney the more his stock will rise as long as he plays well. That exposure would be priceless.

I keep thinking back to Kemba Walker and also the Nova players last year.

For Ponds sake, I hope he gets drafted and achieves his dream next season. Seems from those in the know, he's all but certain to leave.

That said, if Ponds were to come back, barring injury, he'd likely surpass Mullin as all-time scorer. Realize Mullin didn't have the 3 point line in his day and would have scored more than his 2,440.

Think it would just be a truly special moment if Mullin were to be there as his coach for such an accomplishment.

Since that won't happen, let's just hope Ponds brings his A game for every remaining game, puts on a show with highlight worthy clips and gets us a W in the NCAA's.

He has just not been the same player lately, certainly not the uncontainable machine that made nearly all great decisions, and was carving up opponents. He may be the most slippery offensive player we've had at his very best. He was finding the cracks in the defense, and had an uncanny ability to get off many uncontested shots at the end of drives. His decisions on when to fire from the outside were sound, and seemed to find the bottom of the net with frequency.

Lately, all of his drives to the hoop seems highly contested and even the shots he makes appear to be low %. From the outside he is hoisting shots that the defense allows instead of letting the game come to him. His prowess on the defensive and offensive glass also appears to be in decline.

This is all be observation, and I am not even sure that the stats back this up.

One thing for certain, is that he has amassed 5 technicals, where I think last season he got one. Perhaps he is frustrated by gang defense, perhaps he believe his own hype and thinks he is too good for the game. Almost every missed drive to the hoop results in him complaining that he got hacked. Truth is, little guys have always been expected to take more contact without getting calls.

I would say Shamorie needs to refocus on amping up his game, and being the same guy we saw earlier this season.

I continue to believe that Ponds is playing hurt and has been for 1/2 the BE Season . I just do not believe it is anything but , injury . Not opponent defenses, taller Players or a deterioration in his Skills . And , I think he is frustrsted that his performance is being hampered as he prepares for the next level . To me , Ponds at 100 percent is the BE Player of the Year . I think he may be 50 -60 percent currently . He knows he isn’t having the Year he anticipated and it shows on his demeanor . Understandable , since his NBA stock plus our Team Performance have taken a hit as a result .

With Shamorie having an ‘uneven’ season, regardless of the reason, do guys think he’ll still go pro ‘somewhere’?
And what about Heron with his knee injury?
Will Mustapha rehab his knee and come back to St. John’s next year?
He might return to play a healthy year and prove his mettle to the next level.
Sensing Shamorie leaves and pursues a pro career.
If so, the roster would be complete ‘as is’.
No available ‘ships’ to give to anybody.
A very interesting situation to monitor.

IMO Ponds doesn’t make an NBA roster, but will go overseas. His play has been too inconsistent this year. Heron seems more of a question mark.

Agree. I do not believe he will get drafted, but will turn pro somewhere. Hard to fault a kid for wanting to improve the lot of his family.

Mustapha Heron is a very good student and can graduate. He's not getting drafted because of the physical issues he displayed this season. Could play overseas.
To quote Spike Lee Shamorie Ponds "tanked it" this season. It appears college teams have figured out his weaknesses a d exploit them. Needed to show more leadership and a more complete understanding of the job of a point guard. Saw it happen with Omar Cook who took his ball and left after one season. Kudos to Slick for giving it 3 years but the back issues, the hand issues, the hot and cold court attitude have cost him. Unless you see a different player in the final games I expect an overseas career similar to Omar.

Would love for Ponds to finish strong and/or return for another year. Get a little bigger, stronger and improve his outside shot. He's been great for the program and will be missed. He has some flaws in his game and its no sin to play 4 years and graduate.
