Shamorie Ponds

Per Rothstein
Two underrated things about Shamorie Ponds: 1. His D (2.8 SPG) 2. His ability to be efficient despite taking difficult shots (53.5% from the field). Playing like an All-American. #SJUBB

On D he may still cheat a bit, but almost three steals a game is invaluable, often converting to easy buckets.

The national sport of Canada is lacrosse, not hockey.

What a disappointment Poutine was after being all excited to try it.

You have to be careful how you pronounce that, or a lot of our guys will be running up to Canada to get some.

The going will get tough soon. This pre conference schedule is like spring training. Ponds appears ready to tear up the Big East but will have to continue to be the best player on the court every game

SJU Press Release
Dec. 21, 2018) – In the midst of a stellar junior season, St. John's point guard Shamorie Ponds has been selected to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List presented by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA), it was announced this afternoon. Ponds is one of just 20 players nationwide to receive the accolade.

Ponds, the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year and a 2017 First Team All-BIG EAST pick, has led the Red Storm to its best start in 36 years. St. John's, one of eight undefeated teams remaining in Division I, has won 11-straight to kick off a campaign for the first time since 1982-83, when Chris Mullin anchored the Johnnies to 14-straight victories en route to the program's first BIG EAST title.

Through 11 games, Ponds leads the team and ranks third in the BIG EAST with 20.2 points per contests. The Brooklyn native also tops the league in a number of other categories, dishing out 5.8 assists and swiping 2.5 steals per outing. Excelling especially at ball protection so far as a junior, Ponds paces the BIG EAST in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.5-to-1.

Ponds has pieced together more than his fair share of sensational performances so far this season, cracking the 30-point plateau on three occasions with six outings of 20 points or more. Not only a prolific scorer, Ponds has also established a reputation as a premier ball distributor, highlighted by a 14-assist, one-turnover effort against Wagner on Dec. 16. His 14 helpers tied for the fourth-highest single game total in program history and were the most by a St. John’s player since 2001.

Ponds and the Red Storm return to action tomorrow night, playing host to Sacred Heart at 8 p.m. at Carnesecca Arena.

Ugh, Hachimura.
People are obsessed with him because he's part Japanese. Jeremy Lin syndrome.
He's a stiff. Watch him move on the court. I really think that even Doug McDermott showed a lot more ability with his limited athleticism.
There's no way he can keep up defensively in the NBA and his offensive game is just plodding. His ceiling will be low. Guys like Sam Dekker, Omari Spellman, average SF/PF hybrid-types, will eat his lunch.
Brandon Clarke looks like the real deal and may be a pretty effective pro right away.

Shamorie Ponds is currently first among Big East players in both assists (6.0) and steals (2.5). Also shooting 37.5% from deep. Shot 25% last season. #SJUBB

He has to have bumped his draft stock.

His improved 3 point shooting will definitely help his draft stock, as will his sharing the ball.

37% from the shorter college 3 point distance and against weaker OOC competition is not an nba eye opener, improvement or not.

The nba 3 is nearly 2 feet further away with taller, quicker defenders. 37% is not impressive

True, but still better than last year's 25%. However, I'm still not convinced he will be drafted.

If they’re going by the numbers then they won’t care about the competition. If they’re going by what they see then they’ll know a large portion of those shots are coming from behind the NBA line.

Or you can click your heels together and he wakes up on an nba team.
