Shamorie Ponds

Interesting dynamic on the handshake line between Shamorie and Howard. Very brief handshake. Usually star players give a half hug. No big deal just thought it interesting.

Years ago, the BE had all star teams travel durin* the summer. Kids from different teams bonded. Nit so any more.

Actually think he gets slightly less calls than he should, perhaps as a result of how crafty he is at rim. He goes up quickly when he gets contact, and IMO doesn't get the benefit of enough of those. There were probably 3+ occasions last night when he got bumped going up and didn't get the call.

Howard is a phenomenal shooter and his step back and ability to shot make without much space is crazy. I don't know if there is anything else he does better than Ponds. Love to have a Howard every year, but if I had to choose only one between him and Ponds I wouldn't even need to think about it.
Howard also gets away with a lot travels. Takes multiple steps to get his shot off. That three he toook from the corner he took about 4 small steps
Just a minor point, granted Howard is gifted offensively and draws fouls very well. What drives me crazy on the defensive end where he struggles is refs rarely call him for bumps when guys drive to the hole. He gets away with murder like some protected species and last night Ponds was clearly vexed at not getting calls driving on Howard at crucial points in game.
He got away with an obvious bump on L.J. I think it was Kutcher who said he got away with a bump, and Mr. Onions said "nice job on defense". I love Bill as a color man, but he missed that one.

If you're starting a team, who do you pick first, Ponds or Donte DiVincenzo? I know Donte is a few inches taller, but I think Ponds is by far the superior player, yet Donte went 17th in the draft

There is a 3 inch difference in height but Donte has much more athleticism. Just very different games. Donte played himself into the first round in the NCAA tournament. That 3 inches and greater athleticism means a lot in the NBA.

I feel ya. However if you were starting a team, you'd choose Donte over Ponds? Just curious. I'd personally take Ponds, however just wanted to kick this around with others. I personally felt being taken 17th was a bit nutty

It is good defense if you bump a guy which throws off his shot and you don't get called for a foul. That said I agree a foul should have been called. Refs seem to swallow their whistles a lot when our guys drive to the hoop especially Heron. Thought Simon took it up stronger and leaned in more and had more determination and purpose on his forays to the basket.

One thing that has really opened my eyes following college hoops is just how talented you need to be to be a starter in the NBA let alone a star. If you're a player in HS you need to be among not only the best in your state but in the country. Then to get recruited by a major D1 school you need to be among the very best in the country. Then when you get there, you need to be among the best ever to have played for your already great school just to get NBA attention. Then you make the NBA and you need to be among the best of everyone on planet earth to start. Then to be a legit star, you need to be top 10 ish on planet earth. It's just insane. We have seen some of the best players in our program's history go to the G league and not make the NBA or make the NBA but rarely see time. Really gave me an appreciation for the Steph Curry's of the world who started as a 3 star recruit going to Davidson becoming among the best ever in the NBA.

Donte has physical advantage in height. His strength in college was hitting open shots. Didn’t break his man down and was not a great defender. Without the great final game don’t think he gets drafted when he did. Struggling to shoot well in NBA. Last I checked 39%.

Ponds more gifted player and scorer. If size was equal not even close.

Som positive comments from Jeff Borzello of espn on us and Shamorie. Think we all feel this but always nice to hear recognition of potential.

Keeping in mind that the last SIX Final Fours have included at least one 7-seed or worse, give us one team currently outside the AP top 25 that has the ability to make a realistic Final Four run come March.

Medcalf: Mike Daum is averaging 24.9 points and 11.3 rebounds for a South Dakota State team that has made 42.7 percent of its 3-pointers this season, comparable to the mark Loyola-Chicago had when it began its Final Four run a year ago. The Jackrabbits, who have lost only one league game this season, and the 6-foot-9 Daum could get hot in March.

Borzello: The easy way out would be to pick one of the teams in "Others receiving votes." The Washingtons, the Auburns, the Baylors. But I'll go a step further. I think St. John's will be an annoying team to play, and if Shamorie Ponds gets hot, the Red Storm can make a run. I tend to get infatuated with teams that have guys who can go get a bucket late in a game, and the Red Storm might have the best one in the country in Ponds. He can carry them.

Sort of like when George the Animal Steele would jab his opponent with a foreign object and hide it back in his trunks, and throw his hands in the air like he did nothing wrong. But even the referee would figure it out the second time he tried. Howard gets away with it all season.

To me, the X factor is Keita. If he can continue to improve and can give us quality minutes, we can do some real damage in both the Big East and NCAA tourneys. He adds depth and size to our team. Our two biggest weaknesses.

That block at the end of the half on Howard was huge. He came out of nowhere. Team doesn't need any major contributions from him. A put-back, a key block, some rebounding and nice defense. He plays hard, even diving for a loose ball and landing on the repaired knee.

Thing I loved was he was able to give us 24 minutes against Marquette, which we needed due to Clark foul trouble and Trimble injury. If he can give us 15-20 minutes per game of play like he gave us Tuesday we will be in great shape the rest of the year.

Yup. Double up on the "want one" post above. Home-made or store bought?

Kid plays real hard and is tough!!!!! I wonder if anyone is questioning toughness or desire to play as there where during his rehabilitation. Let things play out.

The seed we get is as key to our hopes of a successful season as is making the Dance to begin the saga. It’s the Dance or bust this year, but winning 1 game...maybe going on a mini run...would be a en elixir, a huge, happy, tonic for the program and our recruiting hopes.
Which is why I’m fixated on these last 8 games and how we do in the BET.
Talk about crunch time.
It’s here.
