Shamorie Ponds

Shamorie is a great college player, but he is not a Point Guard. He does not have the basketball instincts for that position. He is a 2G hiding in the body of a Point Guard. Additionally, he likes to show boat too much to be a credible Point Guard. He will have a hard time at the next level, and I am not sure he will make the next level.
He is more of a point guard than Howard. Don’t mean to detract from Howard’s YTD performance as it speaks for itself. However, I have to bet his scouting report is great shooter, average to sub-par everything else. And, can be defended.
I really hope he doesn't read your post before tonight's game.

Lol what?!!! He is a born PG with amazing instincts, vision, touch, and awareness.

The only thing he lacks is elite athletic ability.

And good 3 point shooting ability.

He’s shooting 38% and almost never gets a set shot.

Ponds is hard to gauge since he hits contested threes and can miss open threes. He is like Yogi Berra, a notorious bad ball hitter.

In simplest terms, where would we be without Ponds? Nowhere
Btw, I also cringe thinking where we would be if Matt did not hit daily double late with Heron & Figgy transfers. To think Heron would also gain eligibility, not exactly a lock at SJU.

We would be where we will probably be next year.

Let's enjoy this year before we start wringing our hands about next year. Remember how fatalistic the board was about this year before Figgy & Heron popped. Lot of things to happen before start of next season, but this is a team worth rooting for & savoring.

Unless something changes Ponds is the BE POY. After last night no need to go into the details. Howard can put up better counting stats all he wants, he went 0-2 against Ponds and got outplayed badly, and last night it was the likely the difference between winning and losing. Ponds is the best player in the conference, period.

Don’t know about Wright , Cooley , Willard or, the others ? MU Board thought the following : 1 . Ponds is a Punk . 2. Ponds gets away with murder driving to the hoop ,?hooking, Pushing , jumping into defender . 3. Ponds is the better player because he is a PG and Howard is not . 4. Ponds is a ridiculous player and thankful MU doesn’t play him again 5. Ponds is better in all categories , except shooting ., it’s interesting how opinions differ .

Disagree with an assessment that Ponds gets away with too much when driving. Actually think he gets slightly less calls than he should, perhaps as a result of how crafty he is at rim. He goes up quickly when he gets contact, and IMO doesn't get the benefit of enough of those. There were probably 3+ occasions last night when he got bumped going up and didn't get the call.

Howard is a phenomenal shooter and his step back and ability to shot make without much space is crazy. I don't know if there is anything else he does better than Ponds. Love to have a Howard every year, but if I had to choose only one between him and Ponds I wouldn't even need to think about it.

Howard also gets away with a lot travels. Takes multiple steps to get his shot off. That three he toook from the corner he took about 4 small steps

Just a minor point, granted Howard is gifted offensively and draws fouls very well. What drives me crazy on the defensive end where he struggles is refs rarely call him for bumps when guys drive to the hole. He gets away with murder like some protected species and last night Ponds was clearly vexed at not getting calls driving on Howard at crucial points in game.

And Howard may not travel as much as the Hauser brothers. Noticed it last game, they travel with a quick 1-2 step on almost every catch, and it continued last night. It's almost like they establish early that's how they are going to catch, the refs don't call it, and that's the standard for the game. Very frustrating as when they started to make 3s late there were a number of bang-bang travels but would take a lot of guts for refs to start calling it then.

I definitely noticed Howard traveling on the replay when Marquette cut our lead down to 1 (I believe it was 63-62). He steps back and then very quickly takes two more steps before releasing the shot. James Harden, thank you!

Ponds is an excellent college player, all-American quality, but I don't see him as an NBA level pro at this time. He needs to get bigger and stronger.

More so than strength (he’s very strong imo) he needs to work on his conditioning. Peak physical condition will be a must.
