Shamorie Ponds

This discussion is a perfect reason that I tend not to look forward too much. We simply don't know who will be here next year. There could be 2-3 very good grad transfers in who don't have to sit, another medical waiver, or impact freshman.

The way I look at POnds leaving is somewhat rationally. If he is deemed good enough to be drafted first round, it will have meant his high level of play continues and then we likely get a tourney bid. For Heron to leave he'd have to get untracked in a big way and that would be good for us too.

I know the reasonable train of thought is that Ponds is gone no matter what, and that might be true. On the other hand, if he is to fall short of the NBA 1st round, other than the obvious money he could make playing somewhere else, the Big East is a better stage for an NBA audition than playing overseas, IMO.

Look at my post on the mock draft. Almost all freshman and sophomores. That's what the NBA GMs want. Young super athletes with upside. Ponds leaving is a foregone conclusion. Heron probably the same.Europe and other landing spots offer a very nice living. NBA dreams quickly become nightmares. Euro dreams last a decade and leave a player flush in cash and a worldly experience.

Agree that Ponds is gone. In addition to solid career playing in Europe, there is nothing saying he won't have a solid chance of making NBA as a second round draft choice. League has plenty. Knicks have a first rounder (Knox), second rounder (Robinson) and undrafted free agent (Trier) from last year's draft, all of whom have excellent shots of being back next year.

Don't agree with much of it and he has Heron getting drafted before Ponds.
Has Ponds going to Knicks along with Barrett so hope this guy is right though.
FYI-At this point I don't think mock draft projections ultimately will decide whether Ponds or Heron leave early or not. I think ultimately even if both are not projected to be drafted they are heavy leans to leave school after this year.
Yup

I don't think either RJ Barrett or Zion Williamson will be good fits for the Knicks or meet their need for a true point guard.
From chatter it appears they favor Ja over Shamorie at this time.
What may hurt Shamorie is his inconsistency and now his back issue. The past two games hurt his profile a bit. He can change perceptions in the games to come but he needs to play both halves and stay in control.

I think Zion Williamson would be great to play with Porzingis & Knox up front. Haven't seen Morant play but will be looking forward to watching him tonight.

Any NBA team would be thrilled to get Zion. He would make any team better.

Williamson screams catastrophic knee or ankle injury. All it takes is for that 285 to come down wrong once, and the way that kid jumps....

Calling Dr. Moe, Dr. Larry, Dr. Curley, Dr. Marillac!

What he does against inferior college players he may not be able to do against NBA players.

This Zion Williamson kid sounds interesting. Perhaps ESPN should cover him and Duke a little more. Maybe they can do a story on him.

Please, proper reference is "Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine."

LOL thanks. But it is actually Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard as Moe and Curley were Howard brothers as was Shemp but it was Larry Fine (and let's not forget immortals Joe Besser and Joe DeRita). Now we can add Dr. Marillac. :)

99 out of 100 I'd agree, but he's so damn athletic that I don't see any way this becomes a Big Baby, Tractor Traylor situation. People need to stop thinking he's the next LeBron, though.

He'll be a very good NBA player, no one will regret drafting him, absent an unexpected injury which can always happen.

Although they are terrific college basketball players, I don't see Ponds or Heron ever playing in the NBA.

I feel really bad for both but for different reasons.
Shamorie Ponds could have been Big East Player of the Year had Mullin added a player like Femi and used Simon off the bench. The backcourt should have been Ponds and Heron with Figueroa and Clark as forwards and a Femi at the 5.
Terrible job scouting bigs by Matt and zero effort by Mullin and Mitch.
Heron was all SEC and under the Mullin system looks lost. It's always easy to blame the players because they are the ones that have to execute the plan but when your plan is flawed and you have no alternatives but sound bites meant to appease you are what your record has been and that is mediocre.
Unfortunately Shamorie Ponds is playing himself out of the draft even though he is still a projected 2nd round draft pick.
Mustapha will be a foreign league player but his aspirations at St. John's will not be as hoped by all.
This year, by happenstance, our starting 5 were all 4 and 5 star talents. Unfortunately the supporting cast provided very little support. It's on the coaches to assemble a cast of players instead of a cast of poorly trained characters.
We, as amateur fans, saw this coming with no bigs, no bench, no experienced assistant, etc. Why didn't the administration and the coach?

Anyone else notice the look on Ponds' face? Two older SJ fans were sitting next to me and noticed that he was not himself. Of course he scored 21 points, but I just did not feel any sense of urgency from him or others except maybe LJ. IMO this is what happens when your coach says everything is fine as you play yourself out of the tournament. Starts with Mullin and he doesn't sound like he cares and his actions sure as hell show he doesn't care totally ignoring recruiting and not coaching.
