Seton Hall (UBS), Sun., Feb. 18, 5p, FS-1

I will not apologize for Pitino nor do i expect remorse from him. We all have seen the players all season , strengths and weaknesses. They are mercenaries now , not necessarily students. I have heard Pitino support them over the course of season when not deserved and i have heard them criticized. I have watched every post game news conference and have seen Pitinos frustration. Lack of Effort and smarts have been too common every game. You can criticize the coaching all you want but it starts and ends with the players. If they all leave, so be it, im sticking with Pitino come hell or high water. Only one with consistent high effort has been Jenkins and lately Conway. Look at the undeserved criticism of both. I hire Jenkins as an AC for next year!

I caught flack last month for comparing Brady Dunlap to Sergio Luyk when some thought he was a righty Chris Mullin. But I knew there was something about his strength that just want right....

Finally... thank you.

What did Pitino say that every Scout / opposing coach / evaluator / fan... didn't already know?

Would i have liked him to take more accountability in potentially not getting "more" out of these guys - Or - explaining why he isn't changing style of play...? Yes.

But in a way he has- he takes credit for putting this roster together a roster that isn't tough and can't defend. He said that will not make that mistake again.
If these weaknesses were so easily identifiable, Pitino wouldn't have taken them in the first place. It's one thing to think it but it's an entirely different thing to hear the head coach confirm in publicly. The pro teams that would be signing our players will be selecting from the Island of Misfit toys...not complete players.

Mullin and Luyk were t playing against 24-25 year old men . Some older than NBA players .
Brady is and will be ok . He does need to get stronger and will get it .
Wilcher will be fine too .

The average College fan , including those here on this site , doesn’t realize fully what the Covid free year and portal transfers plus NIL money have done to this sport .

These are no longer Student Athletes . That ship has left. These are paid Athletes wearing School colors . They will soon be as loyal as Kevin Durant and LeBron James . Free agents all .

So ,, thinking Fathers will object to their son making 100 k or more , playing BB might want to think again .
Rick Pitino can make teams better , Wyeth the right talent .

He couldn’t do it with 2 Ivy Kids. 1 Iona A plus guard , 1 St Johns 6’11” inch center who has average talent but , is only like the 5 th or 6 th best Center in the BE and 1 more player transfer from the Portal .

Not enough to be a BE contender .

Actuality he did well to win the 6 games we have won . Only 1 on the Road , Nova .
Other than De Paul and G ‘town we have the least talent in the BE .

It’s time to jettison any idea that Ledlum and Dingle are any better than what they have shown at a BE level .
We all felt their Ivy stats would translate here . It hasn’t .

They have played hard , for the most part but , I think Dingle turned off to Pitino very early on the season . Ledlum just is out gunned and under sized in the BE .
Those anointing Luis as a lottery pick , have seen that fall apart .

SH has 3 proven BE players in Richmond ,Dawes and Davis plus Wusu making 4 .
It was the difference on Sunday .

To me it’s not their weaknesses that’s necessarily the problem. It’s that they’re not giving maximum effort in areas that are needed in order overcome some of these weaknesses and win a few of these games when they could have. Thats what’s annoying the hell out of Pitino and me quite frankly. It’s that he’s saying things 10 times and they’re still not doing it. He said in one of the huddles “I’ve told you guys five times already.” If they would give maximum effort and listen to their coach maybe they overcome or mitigate some of their weaknesses and win some of these games but they’re not doing it and they deserve to be lambasted for that.

“We kind of lost this season with the way we recruited,” he said. “We recruited the antithesis of the way I coach, with speed, quickness, fundamentals, strength and toughness. We did not to do that. It’s a good group, they try hard, they’re just not very tough.”

I think one thing Pitino's comments did do was to shield his players from what would have been an avalanche of criticisms and negative reporting they would have received from the media, podcasts and even from some of us on this Board for their piss poor play in a must win game against Seton Hall. The facts that the team blew a 19 point half time lead and scored only four points in the first eleven minutes or so of the second half received very little attention when compared to Pitino's comments about his team. Also, the pattern of blowing half time leads in the last five games in much the same way as the Seton Hall game and the outrageous comment made by Kolek comparing our reaction to Marquette's run as "barbecue chicken" hardly came up, if at all.

If that was Pitino's intention then he is truly playing 5-D chess and I'm playing uno.

yall amaze me on here. After our next loss, if Rick walks out for the press conference and takes a shit on the table, I look forward to seeing yall analyze how it was ultimately what this program needed 😂

You missed my point. Whether he intended to or not, his comments did in fact shield his players from playing a piss poor game against Seton Hall. Do you disagree?

I found that very curious. Sim not worth a mention? Is Pitino just waiting for a chance to move him into the lineup? I'm hoping Sim sticks. Like his attitude and think he has potential to turn into a player.
Witcher and Dunlap won't be back next season. Sophomore year is too critical to these young guys. Can't take a chance with Ricky's up and down substitution pattern and dog house behavior.

Were Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Chris Mullin quick laterally? Athletic?

Chris was tough, so maybe he could walk on for a Pitino team.
By the way, he is in the Hall of Fame and had an outstanding college career and also a great pro career, CRP.

No, I completely agree!

I made a joke about Pitino's intentions precisely because this is the first loss we've had where we've been so preoccupied by Pitino that we haven't once discussed Daniss Jenkins. lol

Just an educated guess. Would you come back?
If your family is from NJ, all St. John's fans, and you're coached by a Hall of Famer who's developed NBA guards & national champions, plus the NIL $ is on par with the rest, I'd say yes you do. Add your brother playing with you. That's a slam dunk situation. Unless the staff makes it clear you aren't part of the plans (which seems to be explicitly not the case).

I like to think I give good attempt at analyzing the different reasons for his behavior... but this is something else- ultimate spinzone... Bravo... i mean this seriously...

leonardo dicaprio bravo GIF

Every P6 men’s basketball coach bookmarked pitino’s comments so they can show those remarks when recruiting against pitino.
Exactly Otis, that’s a big concern for sure. Money talks but if the money for a big time player was offered elsewhere, we lose.

Agree Jack. I wonder....Is shitting the table worse than shitting on the players publlcly?

Of course issues need to be "called out"...that's one of the purposes of locker rooms and one-on-one direct conversations. When that doesn't work, that's what benches are for.
Leadership is partly about taking accountability as well as demanding it.
Pitino's invective about different players and team play grew progressively worse in recent weeks. The play became progressively worse simultaneously.
At some point, the astute leader stops doing the same thing when the result is diminishing returns.
As someone who was elated at Pitino's hiring, I hope inwardly he comprehends his behavior was just wrong, even if his evaluations were correct.
Hopefully, some of our potential recruits are as generous as some here in justifying Pitino demeaning individual players to the nation's sport world.
I am disappointed he would initiate one more pathetic chapter in the St John's litany of basketball ineptitude..
