Seton Hall (UBS), Sun., Feb. 18, 5p, FS-1

I don't know why Pitino keeps saying her didn't see tape on the prayers his staff brought in. When he was at Iona they player Penn and Harvard and both Dinkel and Ledlum played. He knew how they played and what their limitations were. I don't think this situation will improve much next year, He unwilling to change with the times.

No knock on Seton Hall, but they didn't take the game from us, we handed the game to them. And it started in the last 5 minutes of the 1st half. All the hall needed to do was stick to their game plan, hit some shots and watch us unravel.
Frankly, that's how I viewed things as well. As I stated yesterday, Seton Hall had the look in which they had told the bus driver to crank up the bus to head back to NJ.

Once they realized we were wilting and would hand over the game is when they showed life.

Agreed. We opened the second half 1-15 from the floor and scored 4 points in the first 12 minutes.
That’s not getting beat, it’s losing.

That is the WHOLE reason we hired Pitino. It is the faith in HIM that he can turn this program around. That's what you do with every coach or person in authority, is that they will make it better, there is never any evidence outside of past results!
But maybe St. John's record of past results of hiring coaches who don't work out trumps Pitino's win at every stop he's made.

At this point, I think every team knows to just hit us in the mouth and we’ll fold. They haven’t been the same team since first Seton Hall game and the UConn game at MSG really killed them. I mean, they’re done. Even if they’re beating Georgetown or DePaul (which is definitely in question) and Soriano poses after a dunk or someone else flashes after a three…how is anyone gonna take that seriously? They have a 20-point lead…is anyone gonna think that’s safe?

Notice, he made mo
mention of Sim.
I found that very curious. Sim not worth a mention? Is Pitino just waiting for a chance to move him into the lineup? I'm hoping Sim sticks. Like his attitude and think he has potential to turn into a player.

Another great podcast Dave….. telling it like it is but wait….. Did I hear Pitino say…” I never expected to win this year” ? Wait…what??? Let’s go back to his introductory press conference where he said….” St John’s will be back and it’s going to happen, NOT IN YEARS BUT IN MONTHS” Months does mean this year. Is he forgetting what he said a few months ago? Discouraging to say the least.

And another thing…. A few weeks ago a reporter asked Pitino about Brady looking kind of frail for his position and Pitino’s comment was something like… “I don’t care if Brady builds himself up, he’s fine the way he is”….. Now after yesterdays loss, he comments that Brady is too weak?????
I've been on this board once or twice before. A Seton Hall grad/fan with friends and family members who are St. John's grads of the university and law school.

We attended the game at UBS, preceded by a great lunch at City Lobster House on City Island. The game gave us immediate indigestion, but somehow SHU managed to win. Grit, Sha factor, 3 starters who have played together for 2 years, all played a role in us pulling out a victory after being 19 down. We needed the road win badly, you guys needed the win too.

Came here to weigh in on the Rick presser:

1. A good coach, certainly a HOF coach, takes accountability for this kind of loss and doesn't belittle players by publicly calling them unathletic, slow moving laterally, etc. Even if true, how could this possibly motivate players? A handful might get pissed and try to prove him wrong. Most of us don't respond well to public humiliation.

2. St. John's resurrected Pitino from Iona and gave him a chance to restore his tarnished reputation with the expectation he would restore your storied program. In what universe is it OK to reference shitty facilities and say this year was "the worst experience in all my years of coaching?" St. John's deserves better.

2. Said unathletic players who can't move laterally or defend have built comfortable half-time leads in at least 4 St. John's games, including yesterday against SHU. These same players suddenly lost their skill/athleticism at halftime? Coaching strategy, putting the right players on the floor to match the opponent's players - this and how coaching chops can help change momentum.

3. Rick said he purposely recruited players to fit his system who could shoot well. In his words, defense can be taught. What has changed? If he prides himself on defense, get the team to play good enough defense to at least close out some of these games where you have had a big lead.

Joel Soriano was among the players tabbed in the pre-season to possibly be POY in the BE. Pitino said he could help get him to the next level. How does it help Soriano's confidence for his coach to call Soriano unathletic and slow of foot laterally? How does that help sell NBA GMs on Joel?

I think Pitino owes an apology to the players and the school for his rant. It was unprofessional and a disservice to the school and players. Yeah, players are paid. I'm paid in the workplace. I don't ever expect to be belittled publicly in the workplace.

I hope the players put this behind them and play for themselves and the name on their jerseys until the coach decides to have their backs and acts like the HOF coach he calls himself.

A leader takes responsibility for a teams failure-He doesn’t blame everyone but himself. This guy, no matter what he’s achieved in the past - is NOT a leader now.

Pitino, in mentioning the sh—-y facilities, listing deficiencies of players by name , and denigrating his transfers ,AND his staff, etc,…exhibited a distinct lack of character . Character is demonstrated when the chips are down. Pitino just failed the character test.

The damage to retention & recruiting will be immense-who wants to play for a guy who throws his guys under the bus while taking no responsibility?

One doesn’t have to look too far to see this lack of character in his past

The Louisville experience tells all one needs to know about this guys character and afew years elsewhere doesn’t wash away what was clear

St. john’s , which should be more focused on character and leadership,(yes-even more than winning) knew what it was getting and still went for the shiny object…this should come as no shock-It’s just just Karma!

At that point it's a curse then and we should hire Newsman as AD and he can drop us out of the Big East. Or maybe hire one of these mysterious guys who I've never seen on the board before to fire Pitino.
Wasn't there a shu troll on here, and the a PC troll?

A new name from either one?

Is this the first player relative to post here since Gardner's mom?

No might about it.

Fifty plus years working with behavioral health issues teaches you a bit about character. My ignorance is about basketball, particularly with my late friend Coach John Mathis no longer available to steer me away from foolishness. When I spoke to Coach Mathis after the Pitino hire his main comment was that St. John's did not need a new coach as much as it needed better players.

I have raised this issue a few times now and do it again because comments about big man lateral quickness focus on what I have noticed all season. If we have only one big with some lateral quickness (Zuby) why do we have a roster that prohibits using him with Joel because they are the protection for one another getting in foul trouble? Mo Keita was the last transfer out. Could he have been the designated backup big and allowed Joel and Zuby to occasionally play together? Could Keita have then been groomed for a slowly expanding role as the 7 footer we have recruited and Zuby play together next year. Zuby at the 4 position has some probable longer term benefit for Zuby as that is a role he might fill in pro basketball in many leagues around the world.

Legions of quick guards and wings can be attached to a 3/2 matchup zone that does not run out of energy in the second half, game after game after game.

He will get kids because they have money to spend. This will blow over in a week. This is the way it is in our society. Do you remember the last mass shooting?
I’m not justifying are even in disagreement to him being held accountable. But so should the players getting paid more money in a year then I have ever earned in a single year. So when he says you’re slow. Work at it you are a paid employee.

How can you work at being slow?

You either have foot speed, or you don't. That doesn't change.
